Weed problem is out of control

Eugénie Bisulco/The Forum
From the Forum:

The sidewalks on the Woodhaven Boulevard service road between 101st and 103rd avenues are being used as open-air dumping grounds for inconsiderate individuals who leave everything from food scraps and broken umbrellas to an old pair of jeans, the reader noted. And weeds in the area have become overgrown, contributing to the eyesore.OzoneTrash2

In an attempt to alleviate the issue, The Forum contacted the city Sanitation Department.

“We reviewed the situation and the litter/weeds are the responsibility of the homeowner/property owner,” said DSNY spokesman Vito Turso. “Our Enforcement Unit will continue to monitor the location and will write Notices of Violation if the litter condition is not remedied.”

I live in an attached house, so I only have to be concerned about the front and backs. I would never allow either to look like this.

Don't these homeowners have any pride?

Obviously not!

Every day I sweep the sidewalk, and remove any trash from the steps and my small garden. I even remove debris from the curb (newspapers, cups etc.) if necessary. My neighbors do the same....

OK, I'm 67, and don't have a hell of a lot to do, but once in a while these lazy slobs should take the time and clean up!

call your councilman and community board then write letters to the press on their lack of action. finally when they appear on a news wire note their failure to do their job in the comments section.

It's the owner's responsibility. Just like sidewalk maintenance. Just like shoveling the snow. Just like sweeping up in front of your property. Just like maintaining the appearance and good repair of your building. "THE CITY"-- as much as people wish this were true-- is not responsible for everything. That said, it's asshole owners that are letting their properties go to shit. This has happened all through history. Good luck with enforcement. Generally, people have eventually voted with their feet and left the emerging ghetto. Sad, but true.

You can make the city responsible for anything you want, and if the homeowners don't care, they will when they get a fine. very simple.

The reason the city doesn't care is that weak communities are easy prey to developers and owners of immigrant barracks.

Better weeds than garbage. At least it's nice and green.

Unfortunately very few and I mean very few care. Everybody else does not give a fuck at all.

That would change real fast if you were fined for it.

DSNY inspectors need to get their lazy asses out of their hybrid cars and walk around and give out fines!
