We want Walmart

From AM-NY:

A Quinnipiac poll released Monday, August 10 stated that 55 percent of New York City voters believed that Walmart should be allowed to open stores in NYC. 54% of NYC voters in union households also polled in support of Walmart.

While 39 percent don't believe Walmart should be allowed to open, if Walmart did come to NYC, 64 percent of voters say they would shop there.

Voters however showed some inconsistent opinions on how Walmart's presence would effect NYC. Seventy-one percent believed that that Walmart's lower prices would benefit shoppers while a similar 70 percent also said that Walmart's lower prices hurt smaller businesses.

Fifty-five percent agreed that Walmart doesn't pay enough in wages and medical benefits.

Well there are not many places that do pay alot in pay and benefits. Jobs these days suck! No more pensions, higher copays at the drs, higher cost of medical coverage, low wages, social security is going to be dried to the bone by the time Gen xers get ready to retire. This whole country sucks with pay especially in places like nyc where rents are not only through the roof, but are burning a hole in the milky way and no average person can afford a house here. So what difference does it make if we bring in another place that pays crap?

No and no! No Walmart. Accepting them in queens is accepting more crap jobs who abuse people, thus bringing the standards lower.

You get what you pay for. They sell poorly made products that don't last.crap, keep it.

Everyone says no to Walmart but no one says anything about Target. There are other big box stores that do not pay well besides Walmart.

Wal-Mart + Politicians = Hypocracy

I have mixed feelings about this, but here goes:

Walmart does pay low wages, but they will hire a large number of people, so it begs the question: is it better to be un-employed or at least earning something, and perhaps gaining work experience that MAY lead to a better paying job down the line?

Walmart will compete with the "mom & pop" stores, but unfortunately, they are able to carry many more products than the "mom & pop" stores CAN CARRY. I will ALWAYS patronize a small local store for something I know they have.... but, the Walmart will usually have something the smaller stores do NOT have.

Thus, I will shop at BOTH depending on my needs.

While I truly understand both sides of this argument, it will come down to each individual consumer to make their own choice of where to shop when and if Walmart comes to THEIR neighborhood....

Bring a Walmart to downtown Flushing to replace that crappy New World Mall on Roosevelt Ave.
People are abused in Queens anyway. Look around Flushing.....abused "coolies" and illegal aliens who get paid meager cash wages and have no benefits. Walmart would be an improvement to the crap stores that proliferate here.

It's the labor union racketeers that are opposed to Walmart not the shoppers.
These fat cats get fatter of the dues of their own union members.
Look at Brian Mc Laughlin....head of NYC Central Labor Council....stole from his own little league and went to prison.

Walmart Walmart! Walmart! Yes! Yes! Yes! Flushing could use one....maybe in Flushing Commons.
Cut the crap already.

Sure, people want Walmart, but I bet they don't want it in their neighborhood, right?

Atlas Park could use one then maybe it might stay alive.

Will they get tax breaks? So often we see retail operators (among others) getting serious tax incentives - because they are creating JOBS. So, in this case, we would be paying Walmart for the right to support their under-paid workforce? but, hey, there would be JOBS. I keep wondering how we can support this, at least in the outer boroughs. If people aren't earning enough to shop, how many new retailers can we support? -note: the same applies to hotels...

Here's a novel idea...

Build a Walmart and then let people decide for themselves if they want to shop there or work there.

NO WALMART!!!!!

Walmart kills small businesses. This corporation treats its employees terribly and have ruined neighborhoods in Long Island. I was just there accompanying a friend. It was a nightmare. I strolled around as I waited for her.... The quality of the merchandise is so poor and the place is depressing with it's hospital lighting.

Please will shop in walmart regardless of how poorly they treat their workers or how they destroy small businesses. People do what is good for them and Walmart offers low prices at a huge cost in the long run for it neighbors.

The best thing about Walmart is that they have a customer service department and you can return items. Seems like 90% of mom and pop stores are “no returns” or “store credit only”, and so much stuff is crap as soon as you get it home. Customer service ends when you give them your money. At least Walmart is accountable for their actions, by a higher corporate power…well, supposedly.

It would be nice to have more national brands in Queens, aside from McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut.

Yes, let's subsidize Walmart by paying workers with medicaid, food stamps etc. because Walmart pays them crappy wages. It is a taxpayer bailout of Corporate America. Walmart pretends that it is just paying what the market says it should, but it can afford to do this because we will make up the difference. Give people a real living wage, not a taxpayer supported corporate handout.

And they wouldn't get subsidies if we raised the minimum wage to $15 across the board instead of just for burger flippers.

Listen to yourself,no no no,and you wonder why we bring in cheap labor, you know "one of those jobs Americans won't do"
Sorry when I was young I took anyjob I could get because my parents couldn't help me so just keep saying No and your kids may never get a first or summer job.
No pensions or benefits That's because of politicians both Democratic and Republican.

What ever happened to free enterprise? Why are the politicians calling the shots about what businesses can open in their boroughs? There aren't many mom and pop stores around anymore, yet there are many big box stores. Walmart should be allowed to open in the boroughs. Let the people decide if they want to shop there. Why should government dictate where you can and cannot shop? Walmart does have a wonderful pharmacy with low prices. That alone would help a lot of people who can't afford their medicine.

Sorry when I was young I took any job I could get

That's just it: when you were young and a dependent on two parents who made a living that did not leave you sp destituts that you were eligible for public subsidies.

Walmart is going to push heads of household from jobs from smaller businesses with higher costs that pay modestly but decently because the turnover would kill them into jobs that pay little enough to qualify them for more subsidies on OUR dime because Walmart isn't concerned with a local clientele getting good service. Their business model is not sustainable at their price point.

Walmart will wipe out every small business & bodega in a 5 mile radius.
Most people are not aware Walmarts have been scuttling its automotive, paint and tool departments and focusing on 20+ more isles of junkfood, frozen foods, diapers, giant drums of cheese balls, box wines. (I could no longer buy 1 gallon transmission fluid or get custom paint mixed)

I almost choked on what unhealthy crap this obese Guatemalan looking woman with 5 obese kids in tow had in piled up her carts. --She got this $214 mountain of junkfood, cans, bread, TV dinners, diapers, tiny plastic shoes (topped with a 5 gallon drum of cheeseballs) all free by swiping a EBT card and entering a PIN.
This happened yesterday (Monday) at the new Walmart by Tanger outlets in Riverhead.
It appears Walmart is slowly re-structuring to cater to EBT card holder's and drop all the stuff EBT cards dont cover.

i live in queens near the LI border, so I have gone to the walmart in valley stream to get some items a bit cheaper (baby diapers mostly)

it is ALWAYS a zoo in the parking lot and the store. the people inside are also just nasty for the most part. the store itself has a shitty layout, and its not just this walmart as ive been to the other locations in LI. small aisles, with too many people cramming through.

My family does very limited store shopping but a major portion of our goods comes from shopping on-line at Walmart.
Competition is good! Bring on the stores including supermarkets like shoprite to add to the competition.
