Civic group pushes to landmark carousel

From the Forum:

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

That is the message the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) is sending when it comes to their most recent push to turn the historic Forest Park Carousel into a landmark.

Looking to gather support from local groups, WRBA announced last week the formation of a landmarking committee dedicated to preserving the carousel — a goal that has been nearly two decades in the making, according to block association members.

At last week’s monthly meeting, Ed Wendell, the block association president, said the association would soon reach out to several local civic groups, including the Woodhaven and Richmond Hill historical societies, Richmond Hill Block Association, Richmond Hill Civic Association, and others in order to push toward landmark status for the iconic structure.

Those tour de force carved (Muller?) wooden horses are far too valuable to leave outdoors.

Make fiberglass replicas and put the originals safely into a museum.

True.

The wear and tear of riding those priceless horses and animals from day to day can take its toll on them.

Better of with repros.

This is Queens where nothing gets landmarked anymore

The LPC is a wasteful agency which has long lost its meaning. The people need to come up with a way to overthrow those faces and rebuild it the way it was meant. It must serve all boroughs.

We certainly hope we're not wasting our time, but we concede the point that the odds are stacked against us. I'm certainly open to any thoughts, ideas, or advice that anyone is willing to share.

True.

You are fighting two forces:

1.you local elected officials, most too dumb and ignorant and have their office because of loyalty rather than wits, and are given orders the the boys that any and all of Queens is to be made available to developers - and elements of Archie and Edith world is not to be protected so that the 'new Americans' (read tweeded Democrats) can paint their own world untroubled with remnants of the past. The local pols will do everything they can to spread misinformation on preservation.

2. the Manhattan preservation community who don't give two shits for you and your world, and have limited preservation in Queens to what they can see from the city. All of their attention, and the LPC budget (funded by your taxes) will go to benefit them. Being backward, dependent upon your pols and local media, you have no idea what is going on anyway.

Yes, when was the last time the Historic Districts Council went out of their way for Queens? They're not a city agency & yet they're hooked on Manhattan.
