Ode to the Kennewick Man - the Great Solutrean Ancestor

(Music by Pete Seeger. Lyrics by Frank of Queens, www.therightperspective.org)

"This Man is your Man.
This Man is my Man.
From California to the New York Island.
From the Redwood forest,
To the Gulf Stream waters.
This Man was made for you and me."

Gary the Agnostic once again proving his vaunted ignorance ("agnosticism" = "without knowledge")

"Its lyrics ["This Land is Your Land"] were written by Woodie Guthrie in 1940 BASED ON AN EXISTING MELODY [my helpful emphasis to assist in guiding your finger along the text]..." - from the Wikipedia article,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_
Land_Is_Your_Land

I gave Seeger credit for popularizing the warbling.

Third time you've made that crack, George. Are you running out of jokes:

Woody Guthrie in 1943."This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called "God Blessed America for Me".[1] Guthrie varied the lyrics over time, sometimes including more overtly political verses than appear in recordings or publications.

Guthrie wrote the song in 1940 and recorded it in 1944. The song was not published until 1951, when it was included in a mimeographed booklet of ten songs with typed lyrics and hand drawings. The booklet was sold for twenty-five cents, and copyrighted in 1945.

The first known professionally printed publication was in 1956 by Ludlow Music (now a unit of The Richmond Organization), which administered the publishing rights to Guthrie's tune. Ludlow later issued versions with piano and guitar accompaniments.

In 2002, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.[2]

To my knowledge (and I've been to many Pete Seeger concerts), he has never claimed credit for doing anything more than singing a wonderful song.

Pete always makes me smile, then I remember what a political simpleton he continues to be.

Before you get too sentimental about kayaking (an activity I heartily endorse), let's remember we are in Nannyville.

By recently enacted law in NYC, you may only launch a kayak from an official site designated for that purpose. And of course, you must purchase a permit in advance. And, you can't launch a kayak before sunrise (screw you, fisherman) and you have to be back a half hour before sunset (screw you again).

Of course, many of the official launch sites suck. For many of these sites, there's no close parking. Carry an 18 foot boat in your arms and see how far you want to walk. But that's OK because the City provides helpful information on using public transportation, so you'll know which bus to carry your boat to a concrete ramp or broken glass beach.

I can't tell you how much this pisses me off. Kayaking damages nothing, kayakers are self-contained (they have to be). The public doesn't need protection from us. Forcing us to pay to use unsightly locations kind of defeats the purpose.

The hell with the City. There are plenty of accessible sites on the Island that are a lot nicer.

Wait until they put the launch under the Kosciuszko Bridge in no man's land!

Babs said...

The reason for the designated launch times is because kayaks may not be seen in the darkness and/or morning fog - those particular rules are for our protection. There are no lights on kayaks - boats of course are lit up, have radar, are carrying flares, etc. and are also REGISTERED if they have a motor - inflatables as well.

Many boatyards will store kayaks - call them - I doubt if the fees are high.

Go for five, George, since you've got nothing else, aside from your tenth comment that your caravan is leaving.

Have I touched a nerve?

Q: What do you get when you cross a Jehovah's Witness and an atheist?

A:Someone who knocks on your door for no reason whatsoever.

Use the diaper you're wearing right now, George. You're the one who whines when someone dares to challenge you. Grow up and get on with your life in the real world instead of sitting at a computer all day.

In the years he has visited this site, I have never read George "whine".

Amazing how testy people get online with people they don't know!

georgetheatheist said...

The real world today encompasses computers. What's your point, besides the one on top of your head?

Go ahead, Big Baby, have the last word.

Gary the Agnostic said...

Nah, George. You just proved my "point". Try and respond to someone without insults or namecalling.

Queens Crapper said...

You might want to try taking your own advice, Gary. This was supposed to be a happy post .

Gary the Agnostic said...

You're right, Crapper. I'm disrespecting Pete Seeger, which is the last thing that I want to do.
