Riot at Rikers

Melee at Rikers Island jail leaves 12 correction officers, 3 inmates injured

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A major disturbance at Rikers Island Saturday night sent 12 correction officers and three inmates to the hospital.

Authorities said several inmates refused to go to their cells for routine lock-in, ABC Eyewitness News reported.

Prison officials said the melee may have been sparked by anger over a prisoner search earlier in the day.

The jail was put on heightened alert Sunday.

The injured inmates are awaiting trial and were identified as high-security prisoners.

Most injuries were minor, but one officer required 20 stitches for gashes on his head and face.

12 Corrections and 3 Inmates? Shouldn't the numbers be the other way around?

Must have been 3 blacks against 12 whites.

Why were any CO"s hurt at all? Why don't they just lock off the areas where the rioting is taking place and let the inmates fight each other until they get it out of their system!

It could only be three blacks 97% of the population is black . And all officers are blue...and it be immoral to let them fight till its out of there system. And against dept rules.

Maybe if Correction Officers union president Seabrook spent more time making sure the Officers that he represents are safe and trained properly rather than put his focus on the MTA board, that Officer might not have received 20 stitches. Thanks Norman, otherwise known as Mr. Conflict of Interest.

Well you know if blacks could control themselves and commit crimes at the same rate as white people that number would go down significantly...

So how do we convince black people to stop committing crimes?

A few ways to stop Black people from committing crimes are as follows: stop flooding black communities with drugs, erase racism from society, racist ways stop a lot of Black people from getting a good education, jobs, businesses, bank loans etc.... Once these things among others are in place, society as a whole will benefit. God wants us ALL to look out and care for one another.

I'm as Irish as Paddy's pig and I agree with corruptionkiller.

Whatever group is at the bottom of the totem pole is the one where the criminals hail from, whether they be Irish thugs during the Civil war, Italian and Jewish organized crime member during the twenties, or Chinese Tong and Triad members during the 19th Century and today.

We give free education and offer CUNY w/financial aid to every high school graduate. Yet many choose to wallow in the mud instead. I'm sick of the "racism" excuse, especially when Caribbean blacks come here and excel. I guess it's not racism so much as it is thuggishness.

Whose fault is it that mommy and daddy are in jail? White people? How many black victims of crime committed by other blacks are there? That stat is probably >98%.

Please, it's time to cut the crap and to take responsibility for one's actions.

Or blind ignorance to reality. Racism is not an excuse it is a reality. College is a far reach for those without guidance.

If Mommy or Daddy are in jail who is the example? You? Education is without a doubt the key, College hasn't been free for many years, ask any city or state college student who does not have a scholarship, I am sure they will educate you.

Like I said earlier, if racism continues to exist, these negative issues will continue to exist and plague society. As far as Caribbean Blacks are concerned many Caribbean Blacks and African Americans can and have excelled in education.

The issue of racism is still in the mix, if you think that those educated Black people aren't facing racist attitudes daily, you are sadly mistaken. Watch the racism at work when one the educated Black people hail a cab or try to join a country club or a boat club, etc.

You can use the actions of the republican party as evidence of extreme racism. I'll say it again since you didn't get the bottom line the last time "God wants us ALL to look out and care for one another" (the keyword is ALL). Many of us live in complete harmony with one another and there are some of in power who want racism to flourish and that is a big part of the problem.

I would love to hear your opinion based on what God says. Have a Blessed day.

God does not have a larynx. He doesn't say anything.

"God wants us ALL to look out and care for one another". When Cain slew his brother Abel. Cain asked God "Am I my brother's keeper?" God never replied. (Check it out: Genesis)

The American Blackman has been kept on his plantation not by the Republicans but by his slave masters in the Liberal-wing of the Democratic Party.

Question. Why are all the Dunkin Donuts run by people from the Asian sub-continent? Why aren't these run by African-Americans? Why isn't ANYTHING run by African-Americans?

Shovel more "guilt" money to da kamoonitay. Let Malcolm Smith, Gregory Meeks, and Charlie Rangel parcel it out.

Well your name says it all. God didn't answer Cain because God asked Cain a question about killing his brother. It is quite obvious that you don't study the Bible. By the way Satan,I hope that you can tell God that he doesn't have a larynx while you're burning in Hell. This should answer your question about caring for one another. I hope that you will one day soon change your perception of God, OUR creator.

Pay particular attention to verse 7

2 Peter
Chapter 1

3 ¶ According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4 whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

5 And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge;

6 and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness;

7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

Spoken to God lately huh? How long you been hearing those voices in your head? If there was a god and "a supernatural realm", he would lose a debate with the ghost of Ayn Rand.

Actually, there is more to the story than is reported. According to people I know who work at Rikers, the whole thing could have been avoided except for the foolish behavior of a guard who screwed up an inmate's belongings during a search.

The moral of the story is, basic courtesy with everyone avoids trouble, danger and expense.

I gotta get outta here.

The inmates were Puerto Ricans and so were a few officers. What difference does it make. Man will man and the officers were out of line to begin with, because "man will be man."
