Building Collapses at Lower Manhattan Construction Site

From Fox 5:

Firefighters are sifting through debris at the site of a partial building collapse in lower Manhattan.

The corner of the five-story building at 72 Reade Street came crashing down Thursday morning.

New York City Buildings Department officials say the building was under construction and unoccupied at the time of the collapse.

There are no reports of injuries but Reade Street is closed in the area.

Buildings Dept. officials are workiing to ensure the structure does not fully collapse.

And during construction safety week, too!

Curbed has some great photos.

And Mayor Dumb-berg is making such a big deal about Air Force #1's flyover.

THIS IS A REAL (ONE OF MANY) INSTANCE WHERE A BUILDING IS BROUGHT DOWN BY OUR HOME GROWN "TERRORISTS"...NEGLIGENT DEVELOPERS
WHO SHOW LITTLE CONCERN FOR PUBLIC SAFETY!

Wadda ya gonna do about this latest
collapse besides handing out the usual slap on the wrist?

BRING DOWN BLOOMBERG AT THE POLLS!

Please support "The Building on Your Head Party." This is a new political movement where your ceiling moves rapidly towards the floor with your body sandwiched in between.

Bloomberg, and Monserrate are just two of the luminaries that we are sponsoring. Remember vote our line if you want more of the same.

Endorsed by:
Grafitti Building Collapse artist--hospitalized.
8 people in Harlem building facade--Buried alive.
Crane Collapse Victims--dead.
Your friends and neighbors--homeless.

Bet ya, non union laborers! so what will bloomberg say now or will he blame it on the airplanes and the president's people.... lmao god i love new york.

Everybody's always looking for someone to blame...

Anonymous said...

Perhaps because there is someone to blame. I could have been killed when my landlord collapsed a ceiling on me.

Rampant lawlessness and corruption are taking place. Paperwork is being altered, lives and property are being sacrificed.

In my building false permits were filled, gasoline was painted on stairwells while the building was occupied, illegal asbestos removal occurred. Construction took place on every holiday and all hours of the day and night. Illegal gas work was done and Con Ed shut down service for two years as a result.

The purpose of the Department of Buildings and the Fire Department is to prevent such dangers.

I have met with the Queens DA's office, police, internal affairs from the Buildings Department, everyone, and the nonsense keeps rolling on.

I have witnessed my neighbors driven out of their homes when illicit and incompetent work destroyed adjoining properties.

Right now, on 18th Street in Astoria there is an unguarded and unfenced building foundation across from where small children play. When one toddles in, it will come as a surprise to everyone.

Perhaps when it happens to you and yours you will not be so complacent.

THE DEVELOPER OF THIS SITE IS THE ONE TO BLAME!

A 100 year old plus building with improper safety precautions and BOOM...there it goes!

With old structures extra safety measures are required!

End self certification.

See that ALL WORK done is by union labor.

Hold the DOB responsible.

DOB is still a joke even after numerous investigations and arrests were made of its crooked employees!

Polygraph them all including its chief superintendent!

YES...and BLOOMBERG IS TO BLAME as well.

He's the CEO who runs our city!
The blame stops there!

Vote no for a third term. The Bloomberg administration pushed a tsunami of community crushing development and with it came way too many construction accidents and infrastructure problems resulting in deaths and injuries because he put greed and way too rapid development a head of safety of the people and infrastructure first before this reckless way too rapid development.

Visit the Bowery Lower East Side and thanks to Bloomberg and his socialite mega millionaire Amanda Burden it now looks like a bad xerox of Dubai.

My newest youtube is Do you think Hilly Kristal would have voted for Mike Bloomberg for a third term? I don't thin so!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCXNKILWUN4

I feel so ill today and I am freaked the //// out when I stop and think of what Bloomberg did to my neighborhood and Hilly is gone and so am I. I live close enough but if I had not been suckered in to believing Bloomberg the first time and voted against him maybe NYC would still look like the city we all loved.

He screwed up and what he did pushing this way too rapid development was pure greed to serve an elite few as we had accident after accident and some even looked like terror attacks.

IF ANYONE ASKS YOU IF YOU WILL VOTE FOR BLOOMBERG SAY NO ////ING WAY!!!!!

I WISH WE COULD PUT THAT ON TV AND THE INTERNET AND RADIO STATIONS 24 HOURS 7 DAYS A WEEK.

THANK YOU,
SUZANNAH B. TROY

ps I am so upset I meant to say PUT INFRASTRUCTURE FIRST -- HOW COULD HE PUT ALL THIS DEVELOPMENT FIRST -- ALL WAY TOO RAPID ON A DELIPIDATED INFRASTRUCTURE.

VISIT AND SEE BY THE BLACK CUBE COOPER UNION PLANS TO TEAR DOWN THE LITTLE YELLOW SCIENCE BUILDING AND SUPERSIZE AND COOPER UNON OWNS THE PROPERTY THAT WAS A PARKING LOT THAT IS NOW A HIDEOUS MIRRORED SKY PIERCING BUILDING THAT REFLECTS A HISTORY DESTROYED AND A COMMUNITY NO LONGER WELCOME. THESE SUPERSIZED BUILDINGS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIGHER ED BUT HIGHER GREED AND RECKLESSNESS BECAUSE THE SUBWAY STATIONS AT ASTOR ARE DELIPIDATED. THE AREA HAS A HIGH COUNT OF INFRASTRUCTURE PROBLEMS.

http://www.ny1.com/Default.aspx?SecID=1000&ArID=69978

HERE I AM WITH DIVERSE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TALKING ON NY1 IN FRONT OF A MEDIUM SIZED WATER MAIN BREAK ONE BLOCK FROM COOPER UNIONS SUPERSIZING THEIR STUDIO BUILDING. CU SENT OUT THEIR PHONY PR PERSON TO SAY IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR CONSTRUCTION.

I WENT TO DOB CITY COUNCIL TASK FORCE MEETING WHICH CHRISTINE QUINN COULD NOT ATTEND SO JAMES ODDO CHAIRED AND I SAID TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE DIEING IN CONSTRUCTION ACCIDENTS.
http://www.chelseanow.com/cn_12/builtupcomplaintssome.html

HERE IS A PHOTO OF ME AT THE MEETING....

and them more and more people died -- it just sickens me. I literally feel sick like post traumatic stress or something.

Wow, you could have knocked me over with a girder, er, feather.

But I totally concur with Suzannah B. Troy. I, too, am sorry that I voted for the Kommissar in 2001. As they say, if I had known then what I do now ...

I realized my big mistake way back in his first term when he was all gung ho for bringing the 2012 Olympics here. Yeah, we really needed that to be shoved down our throats! Fortunately, the selection committee wasn't bought out by him. That was probably the first time in his life that he didn't get his way. Wah wah!

I'll bet anyone that LiMandri's hair turns all gray within the next couple of years.

well i just heard this site was non union workers and these so call laborers took out a supporting wall. this is what happens when you hire non union. when will the city wake up and not give out contracts unless the companies guarentee union workers only. you may pay more but get more. now this site is useless and i guess the developer won! now they'll have to tear it all down, guess they won't be preserving this one, what a damn shame.

PizzaBagel said...

Within the next few years? More like mere months -- if he isn't already gray. [DOB Commish] LiMandri should be stocking up on Just For Men by the case.

There's a "notable" building collapse or construction accident pretty much every week -- and who knows how many more there are that don't get press. Truly a building "boom" in the worst interpretation of that term.

ANY MORE ATTEMPTS BY OUR CORRUPT POLITICIANS TO REZONE ANOTHER AREA OF OUR GREAT CITY TO ALLOW THIS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY TO INCREASE SHOULD BE GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE OFFICE DISMISSAL AND SHOULD BE FOUGHT WITH EVERY LEGAL AVENUE AVAILABLE. LIC AND DUTCH KILLS ARE A MESS AND HAVE DRIVEN MANY LONG TERM MIDDLE CLASS PEOPLE AWAY. ASTORIA IS FAST BECOMING A DISASTER AND IS CONSIDERED A FLOOD ZONE NOW BY INSURANCE COMPANIES WHO REFUSE TO ISSUE HOME INSURANCE TO US.

BLOOMBERG & VALLONE HAVE ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN TO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. MY HOME IS WORTHLESS NOW SINCE IT IS CONSTANTLY BEING FLOODED BY CODE VIOLATORS ON MY BLOCK.

NO DRAINAGE - DO YOU GET IT? CONCRETE EQUALS NO DRAINAGE EQUALS FLOODS.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WITH THIS IN NYC. IT'S PAST TIME WE HAVE TAKEN BACK OUR CITY FROM THESE CRIMINALS. THE D.O.B. IS A SHAM - A PLAYGROUND FOR THE RICH AND THE CRIMINAL AND THE ABSENTEE LANDLORD.

VALLONE ARE YOU READING THIS? BLOOMBERG, YOU PIECE OF CRAP, DO YOU GET IT? OR ARE YOU TOO DUMB TO UNDERSTAND THE REALITY OF WHAT YOU HAVE CREATED AND WHAT YOU HAVE DESTROYED IN OUR CITY.

VOTE THEM ALL OUT AND VOTE IN COMPETENT GREEN ACTIVISTS WHO HAVE THE CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE FIRST AND THE DEVELOPERS LAST AND MOST IMPORTANTLY REFUSE TO TAKE MONEY FROM THESE MILLIONAIRE CONCRETE WHORES LIKE PISTILLI AND ROCKROSE.

BLOOMBERG'S MILLION TREE CAMPAIGN IS A FARCE AND A LIE AS LONG AS HE ALLOWS DEVELOPERS TO DESTROY OUR NATURAL DRAINAGE IN OUR GARDENS, BACKYARDS AND SIDE PLOTS.

IF ANYONE ON THIS SITE REFUSES TO BELIEVE THIS, TRY AND GET FLOOD / HOME INSURANCE FOR YOUR ASTORIA HOME NOW YOU SPENT YOUR WHOLE LIFE SAVING FOR.

The Ceiling on your Head Party supports the current administration's forward-thinking development plans.

Thanks to the efficient use of economically-friendly non-union labor we have become the building collapse leader of the world.

The second part of our platform includes building collapses of newly-built units, building fires, leaning structures, sinking structures, exploding structures... all guaranteed to guarantee the construction, repair, medical and emergency services jobs of the future.

A vote for Ceiling on Your Head is a vote for work!!!

DUMP DER FUHRER AT THE POLLS
BEFORE HE SUSPENDS ALL OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES!

HE'S ALREADY STARTED BY USURPING A 3RD TERM RUN!

DO YOU WANT TO SEE A NEO-NAZI PARTY OF REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS TAKING OVER ALL OUR NEIGHBORHOODS?

I SMELL A BLOOMBERG IMPOSED CURFEW COMING SOON!

"KNOCK, KNOCK...
OPEN THE DOOR..MACHT SCHNELL" !!!

OOPS...
I THINK THE SS ARE ABOUT TO CARRY ME AND MY COMPUTER AWAY!

PRAY FOR ME!

Not a word from HRH Bloomturd on the myriad building disasters. A mere few yards from yesterday's catastrophe is the "Leaning Tower of Tribeca": a landmark building knocked off its foundation by inept construction being performed literally atop this 6-floor jewel which is now propped us by massive beams and is the subject of no less than a dozen legal proceedings. Developer and contractor should serve long prison sentences and cough up millions in fines.

Keep allowing greedy developers with the whore politicians who survive off them--in league with the thoroughly corrupt DOB-- to build new mega structures atop older buildings and we'll continue to see the casualties grow.

ps The horrifying collapse of a synagogue on Rivington Street Lower East Side was very convenient. If they said hey we want to tear down this historic building and supersize it -- there might have been a huge fight and bad publicity but oops it feel to the ground and no one was around....

When you see these kind of collapses there may be EVEN more to the story.....

Anonymous said...

Suzannah, you are not kidding. I know that several buildings in my area were destroyed when adjacent buildings were put up. What a way to deal with hold-out homeowners, kill them, destroy their property, send them fleeing to the street and then off them a pittance or nothing for their property while building your monstrosity.

It's like they say: It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. But these bums don't even ask for forgiveness afterwards. They just say that the building was old and was an eyesore and would have fallen down anyway. Build they must!

The Building on Your Head Party in conjunction with the New York City Department of Buildings celebrates,
Construction Safety Weak--and we are in agreement that the weaker the better.

Paper-thin buildings will mean more rapid turnover for greater construction opportunities in the future.

Support Construction Safety Weak, Bloomberg and Monserrate. Construction Safety--the menace to our continued prosperity!!! Construction Safety Weak now and forever.
