Bicyclist hits pedestrian then beats the shit out of him

Story is here

Isn't it sad that not only did no one intervene, no one even shouted "Hey, leave him alone" or "Police". Even the cameraman just calmly shot the whole thing.

There both idiots. The pedestrian was in the street on a red light? Then the pedestrian follows him and cars are honking at the cyclists while the pedestrian is provoking him walking towards him.

He should have just walked or biked away at that really busy intersection not letting the traffic and the guy get the best of him and not turned into a savage. I cant count count the number of times Ive almost been hit walking on a green light and a car speeds through and even screams at me and other pedestrians thinking they have the right away when there on a red.

There is more than a couple of cars I see speed up running a light everyday when obviously pedestrians are walking. Wouldn't put it past them to get out of their car acting like a brute also.

Im sure the car people on here are just frothing to stereotype all bikers as one in the same. Not the case at all.
You should cover the hit and runs more often.

Can you have road rage on a bicycle?

Who said the pedestrian was in the street on a red light? More likely the messenger (the type of bicyclists who most frequently disobey traffic signals) ran through a red light and hit him.

They had a verbal argument and there is no excuse for hitting someone in the face with a metal object multiple times. This lycra wearing brute belongs in jail.

Why was this guy walking at him when he's trying to bike on a green light yelling at him? I'm sure if this guy had no business being in the street at the moment, but he beat up the biker then it would be just fine and funny to the people on here without a doubt.

Wheres the violent comments that used to be tossed around on here quite a while back before this video? The bike lane with bikers obeying the law even provoked violent comments on here quite a while ago.

Last comment makes no sense. The biker hit the guy. However that accident happened, the guy had no right to whack the guy in the face with a bike lock on a chain.

The defense of the madman by bicyclists is predictable. Can't wait to read Streetsblog's post about this.

Yes it does make sense when people have joked about putting crap in the street in the bike lane, or driving motorcycles in the bike lane, and just plain running down cyclists in the bike lane over a year ago on this site when bikers are going by the law not running lights. This guy ran a light?
The courier was an idiot for doing that which I said before.

You take these comments seriously? Have you heard of these things actually happening within the past year? No. So it's just someone blowing hot air on a blog.

Take it easy.

who cares who was at fault for them starting to argue? the guy on the bike was walking away but the pedestrian wouldn't have it. next time I'm sure he'll shut his mouth and keep walking.

besides i'm not so sure the pedestrian didn't put his hands on the guy's bike or even the cyclist first, they duck behind the telephone booth and you loose sight of what happens in those first few seconds

It doesn't matter if the guy did put his hands on lycra man first. You use your hands in return, not a bike lock to the guy's face.

These responses illustrate part of the reason why people hate bicyclists.

The bicyclist better be careful if he comes back into that area. The Asian man might be waiting with a few friends and go medieval on his ass.

The reality is, two hotheads. The bicyclist hit a man with a lock--aggravated assault, and the pedestrian menaced a complete stranger, maybe a murderer fresh out of Rikers.

Neither of these were any angels.

First of all, we don't see what actually sparked the incident on the video. Secondly, watch the video closely. The pedestrian follows the biker, and when they get behind the scaffolding, it looks like the pedestrian takes the first swing at the biker at 0:16 and the biker attacks in defense. I can't say I blame him for defending himself.

Self-defense with a bike lock? Would it have been equally ok if he took out a knife or gun and defended himself with it?

I'm so glad the biking population of NYC is coming here to reveal their positions on self-defense issues.

New NYC law:

It's ok for a biker to hit an unarmed pedestrian with what could be a deadly weapon.

Typical stupid men. Using their fists instead of their brains.

Anonymous said...

No, Crapper, but as someone who is not trained to defend myself with my fists, if someone attacked me like that, I would defend myself with what was available; bike lock included.
The biker did not square off to fight this guy. He was followed and sucker-punched while on his bike. In my opinion, he is not obligated to fist fight in that situation.
I don't feel sorry for the pedestrian. When you follow and attack someone, you open yourself up to this kind of situation.
I love your blog, but I think your title for this story is misleading. I was expecting to see an unprovoked attack by the biker, not an attack by someone who was sucker punched first. Also, we do not actually see the biker hit the pedestrian, so we are not entirely sure what happened before the conflict in the crosswalk.

Queens Crapper said...

He was sucker punched? Do you even know what that term means? It's when you fake being nice and then throw a punch to catch the target off guard. Bike man had an angry pedestrian yelling at him. There was definitely no sucker punch. And since the camera doesn't show exactly what happened behind the scaffolding you can't assume the pedestrian punched first.

The eyewitness who did the filming explained what happened before the camera started rolling.

These bike lanes that are going all around the city are a bad idea. They are very dangerous to the cyclist, pedestrians and cars. They give a false sense of safety. I HATE THEM!!!! They are a big waste of money. Fix the roads and bridges....

Honestly, I don't know who comes up with these stupid ideas.

FUCK THAT take this shit back to the 80's to remind people to mind their fucking business unless they are ready to face consequencse/throw down. I hate bike messengers passionately, but once someone starts some shit up, they get what they deserve. Fuck feeling sorry for someone, if the guy didnt want problems he should have kept his mouth shut.
Hes a tough while hes intervening with your business but when you whoop his ass were supposed to feel sorry?
I love the sound the U-Lock makes

I am not assuming anything, I watched the video closely many times. Watch closely a few times crapper, you can see the bikers head get thrown back from the punch. You're right it's not actually a sucker punch, but the biker was definitely not squaring off to fight this guy, he was walking along side his bike.

Queens Crapper said...

I don't see the biker's head getting thrown back from a punch. But whatever. To say it's ok to hit someone with a piece of metal because they "started" something and "should have minded their fucking business" is really a bad argument. If the guy walking was hit by the bicyclist, then he didn't "start" it, and it was his business. Doesn't mean he deserves to be assaulted.

Anonymous said...

Funny how the cyclists here defend the action while a biker commenter on the original post clearly states that the bicyclist was in the wrong.

Anonymous said...

The "lock" is a dangerous instrument.............assault 2,c felony...................unless you are a state senator.

Anonymous said...

I'm not saying it's OK to hit anyone for "starting something" or not minding their own business. It's not about that. It's about being attacked and put in a position to defend yourself. Watch the video a few more times. That biker took a hard punch to the head. It can be seen between the telephone and the scaffolding at 0:16. The pedestrian had no right to do that.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure the video shows that, but regardless, it doesn't change the fact that the biker had no right to hit the guy with a bike chain.

At 00:08 the biker is walking away and the old man or whatever you want to call him continues to pursue battle. The asian guy lost and thats to bad for him. IF YOU TRUELY WANT TO AVOID A PROBLEM AND ARE DETERMINED TO DO IT, you will avoid it. That guy wanted problems and he got it in the form OF A FUCKING U-LOCK.

Anonymous said...

Pursue battle? He was yelling at the guy. Actually, at one point he just seemed to be talking to him. Funny if this was a driver who beat up a cyclist who "deserved it," the bike nuts would be howling.

Anonymous said...

"the old man"

Exactly. He clocked a guy twice his age with a piece of swinging metal. What a coward.

And to top it off the clown was wearing one of those dopey spandex bike costumes.
