Mayor Bill de Blasio will order release of prisoners to stem COVID-19 outbreak

NY Post

Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to release “vulnerable” inmates from city jails to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic into local lockups, he said Wednesday.

“In the next 48 hours, we will identify any inmates who need to be brought out because of either their own health conditions — if they have any preexisting conditions, etc. — or because the charges were minor and we think it’s appropriate to bring them out in this context,” de Blasio said on WCBS radio Wednesday evening.

“That said, we still need our criminal justice system to function,” he added.

The announcement comes as correction officer and an inmate both tested positive of the deadly illness in the past day.

The Correction Officers Benevolent Association union has called for new masks to protect its members and for all new detainees to be housed in facilities other than Rikers Island amid the outbreak.

Leave it to the defiant hypocrite to do this after he proposed a shelter-in-place executive order. Is it possible an island prison isn't a suitable venue for social distancing?

Seems Strange to me......This is something they have been wanting to do for a long time.....I've worked the Jails during other OUTBREAKS over the years from 1980 and Never have I heard or seen and GETTING OUT OF JAIL CARDS......What A Load of you know what.

No, a prison is not a venue for social distancing... on the other hand, letting these people out begs the question: where will they go? and, if they are already medically compromised, release will simply put pressure on soon-to-be strained "outside" medical service providors.

Yeah, what a load of WE ALL know what.

Releasing them into the general public is yet another ruse to force costs on the government (read the rest of us) for it will endanger the health and welfare of the city. But its far worse than that.

What is missing in this discussion from the Mayor's office are comments on the 10s of 1000s living in the dormitories (read cellars and garrets) in Flushing and Elmhurst. Teams should be making sweeps of those locations to take samples. How about the shelters? How about forcibly rounding up the homeless living/eating/sleeping in public spaces as the trains?

There you might find 3rd world living conditions and 3rd world health conditions. There you might find the hidden time bomb ticking ready to blow us up.

Why not an official comment anywhere? Why only ruin the lives of the rest of us by taking away our jobs and lives by forcing US not to work so we can pay our rent and feed our families? Go to where the problem really is!!!

They let them out in California and now the broke ass homeless criminals are in masks busting right threw peoples front doors and windows at night with quick hit and runs.
They grab the 1st hostage in reach then head straight for the bedrooms demanding cash and jewelry

You spelled CHINESE WUHAN VIRUS wrong.

Don’t let media paid by communist PR tell you different.

And then they will all clog up the ERs because most have no insurance probably and if any of them even feel sick, they will go to the ER to get treated for the slightest cough even. They are better off staying in jail.

ERs?
No ERs in 2 weeks
We are going have tents in the streets and rooms in schools packed in like old photos of the Auschwitz sleeping barracks stacked perhaps 6 high

These ships they are bringing in only have 80 or so critical care beds AND they are for government & emergency workers, National Guardsmen to keep continuity NOT US.
We may be 2 weeks suspending the Posse Comitatus Act to allow the military to enforce civilian populate.
I see no way out of it of this needing to happen to keep some kind of order.
