Excess NYPD Enforcement at Grab-and-Go

NYC’s Department of Education’s Grab-and-Go is an excellent program during this COVID-19 crisis.   I’ve passed by several schools where it has been implemented.   To insure the safety of the parents and children picking up these meals, NYPD has assigned crossing guards at the schools.  My observation – why so many?  I’ve seen between 6 and 8 posted at the corners (at the school and the next block), sometimes one on each of the 4 corners.   I don’t think that the traffic to the Grab-and-Go program justifies the numbers, especially since it takes place between 7:30 and 1:30.   During a normal school day, there’s only 1, maybe 2 guards assisting the entire school’s traffic (pedestrian and cars) during the peak morning and afternoon rush.

Recommendation : re-assign the excess to other much needed and important NYPD areas, such as monitoring the social distancing in our NYC parks, playgrounds and other public areas.  I’m sure the NYC hospitals also need crowd monitoring (social distancing).

Its called 'Honest Graft.' The guards are drawn from groups that are targeted for support by 'tha Boys' so of course they get the cushy jobs.

Enforcement tasks? Real work? Come-on people! Get real.

Those do nothing jobs exist to harvest votes on your taxes.

Really?! School Crossing Guards are NOT "do nothing jobs" & not a waste of your precious tax payers money. They are providing a service in all types of weather protecting children & adults against traffic preventing accidents.

You're a miserable person with no life.

School Crossing guards are just that, they are not enforcement. The city is trying to keep them employed if they want to. I'm friendly with one and she told me she had a choice, stay home, don't get paid but keep your health insurance or go out and get paid. she chose to stay home. You would take money out of the hands of someone who needs to feed her family?

They are School Crossing Guards, not police officers. Their job is to help children cross streets safely. The grab-n-go locations are the only schools open other than the Regional Education Centers.

Middle class scum who need to graft the system by any means. They use the guise of honest working people but they would not hesitate to get extras whenever possible

Crossing guards do wonderful jobs , don’t know where you are from but in Brooklyn I’ve seen every guard out crossing even adults crossing if they’re any kids to
Cross

Crossing guards are not full NYPD officers. Their six days of training does not include patrolling parks or playgrounds.

From the looks of this, these look like NYPD being assigned crossing guard duty. The NYPD recently had to suspend it's movie and tv unit to have them do real duties.

Because of the social distancing regulations being enforced, the NYPD is going to be more adamant about the rule. Right now, they got infrared footage and police cruisers making announcements on loud speakers. It's looking and sounding dystopian out there.

The city is trying to keep crossing guards EMPLOYEd! Isn’t that a good thing, seriously? God help us, please!!! I leave near a public school with an amazing crossing guard- she has been waving down ppl on the street to let them know there are meals available for them and their children (and the school employs ppl who are making these meals- also a good thing!!). She also serves as the only official person stationed at the school, who answers questions from confused parents who are still showing up asking where they can find the laptops promised to their children so they can school from home. God bless us all.

And to answer the question about why so many guards per corner: not every school is open for food distribution, so many of them lost their regular posts.

AND, again, crossing guards are not NYPD officers- they do not carry weapons, they have no authorization to arrest people... do YOU want to stand outside on the cold and rain for 5 or 6 hours straight? No?- you’d rather stay home watching Netflix? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Have a heart. Say Thank You!

@Craphurst Lady (I love that handle)

I know they are not cops and are unarmed. Just making a hunch that they could be reassigned for this duty because crime actually went down because of the epidemic.

They deserve praise, without a doubt.

This is Mayor bozos Pet Project to hand out these meals
My sister is a retired paraprofessional she said 80% of the school meal wines up in the garbage... That's why these kids don't want any pot of this meal... The numbers showing up to get the meal do not quantify a poor crossing guards... But they have no choice they need to keep their Healthcare... Or stay home and risk their benefits lapsing
They can be better served taking a count on how many people are not using these useless bike Lanes... And furthermore
Lee's crossing guards guardian angels... How many kids would be kidnapped without them a earn their keep we are blessed to have them
