Commercial vehicles are prohibited on residential property

From the Queens Chronicle:

A Flushing man wants two commercial trucks parked at his neighbor’s house to hit the road.

Manzar Karim is sick of commercial vehicles being parked in the driveway of a house at 33-55 159 St.

“There are two trucks,” Karim, who lives nearby, told the Chronicle. “There’s no warehouse, no shops, nothing, in about 30, 40 blocks. It’s a resident area, completely.”

The area is zoned R1-2A, a residential designation.

He spoke to the offices of Councilman Paul Vallone (D-Bayside) and state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) about the issue and filed a 311 complaint.

The building is being rented to a family by Feng Liu, who bought the house in October. He has been issued a ticket by the Department of Buildings for the vehicles, which he says are not parked at the house overnight.

“I recently acquired this property like two months ago and I leased it out to one family,” he said. “They own a moving company where they usually have a lot of stuff to move around but usually at night they rent a spot somewhere else for a monthly fee.”

The senator wrote the DOB last month urging it to look into the truck situation. According to Avella spokesman Conner Quinn, the agency has not sent a response yet.
Vallone’s office also reached out to the DOB before the ticket was issued and plans on following up if the problem is not solved.

This is a problem all over Queens and is why the borough looks like one big truck yard.

We also have a Chinese owned commuter van taking up 3 precious spaces on our block. Commercial vehicles should NOT be allowed to be parked on residential blocks, period. It takes up multiple parking spaces and it looks very unsightly, spoiling the look and feel of the neighborhood. It could also be dangerous for kids, as you can't see them behind such tall vehicles as easily as you could over a regular car. But Chinese don't seem to care about anything but scraping in their next dollar. Esthetics, safety, be damned.

Lay down the lay and the problem of trucks/commercial vehicles parking illegaly on our streets should end. It won't happen for two reasons. One people give up after calling 311 numerous times and nothing gets done and second some people in Queens like their "Crap" and choose to live with it. Hold your elected officials responsible and make them earn the salary they collect or vote the bums out !

Oh please give me a break.... "They rent a spot out overnight"? Come on now what a pathetic liar. If they own a moving company then obviously their company isn't doing very good business if it is only parked in these spots during the day. Obviously, your not moving anything if your trucks are parked there a lot during the day. Isn't the point to owning a moving company to actually be out on a job moving something?

Livery service vehicles, taxicabs, vans and buses are not considered commercial vehicles and are permitted to park overnight on any street. Commercial vehicles, regardless of size or use, may not park overnight on any street or within any residential property. Additionally, RV's and motor homes may not park overnight or be stored on any street.

I called the city about all the taxi parking in my neighborhood, because so many folks there drive cabs and they said they have changed the laws that no allow cabs to park overnight in residential areas.

As usual another fucked up thing from our wonderful city.

They're probably renting out rooms in the parked trucks, call it in as a camper and/or illegal boarding house. Am pretty sure you can make the complaint on line anonymously.
Maybe they're turning tricks in the parked truck, so convenient, they only charge $1. to use the bathroom.

Of course. fuck home ownership, right? Just make that Yuan.

The monthly or weekly ticket is a great deal.
2 Commercial parking spaces for trucks that large would cost over $1000 a month and can be miles away (a HUGE hassle every morning). You then need to register & insure a car to get to them because commercial parking is in oddball locations with no public transportation.
If your a moving company your at huge risk of overnight theft because you must sign a blanket liability waiver with the landlord of these places to get a space.
No thanks to all of it, better off with the tickets

Wrong. NYPD is giving out tickets after 9PM to vehicles that have commercial plates and are parked on residential streets.

And I've got box trucks all over my neighborhood parked on the street overnight, all with license plates from different states that they change regularly, and in the driveways. If you catch them at just the right time you will see them loading and unloading mattresses that are filthy from one truck to another. We've been trying to get this shut down for years to know avail. Sanitation tried but there wasn't much they could do because the guys took the license plates off so that they could not issue a violation. When people complain about something like this going on I really wish the buildings Department would do something about it instead of just saying there's no violation found when they drive by the house and see that they are two gigantic box trucks parked in a driveway what commercial license plates and commercial advertisement on the sides, Front and back of the vehicles

Try 165th Street between Crocheron and 35th Avenue west side.
2nd house in from Crocheron is running a parking lot.
The owner actually hung up a sign advertising $150 a month fee.
Since then the sign has been removed BUT there are 3 cars still parked (one under a blue tarp) on the side lawn and two trucks (one large box truck) in the rear.
Where is the DOT? Where is Councilman Paul Vallone?

Yikes. Someone missed the R.I.F. program in elementary school.

TAXIS DON'T HAVE COMMERCIAL PLATES.

Why does anyone care when it's parked in a driveway? It's not taking up street parking. Does the sight of a truck trigger you?

Joe Moretti said...

Lets just be real, the reason all this kind of shit happens, especially in Queens is because the bottom line there is a complete lack of any kind of enforcement on quality of life issues and all the culprits know this and just continue doing it, because they know they can get away with it.

Face it New York SUCKS.

Because if we wanted to live next to a truck yard, we would have bought a home elsewhere.

We also have several Chinese commuter vans parked on the street overnight (by PS 162 in Bayside). They actually had shovels with them on Sunday and dug out a spot for the van to park. What concerns me more is the number of small school busses that have also been parking overnight and all day every weekend. It makes you wonder what kind of school bus companies these are that they don't even have a commercial lot to legally park their vehicles. These owners should not only be ticked but should have their school busing contracts voided. They don't seem professional enough to entrust with our children's lives.

AND this is why Queens is the way it is, with assholes like the above comment. WE CARE, because it is illegal to park COMMERCIAL TRUCKS in your driveway, we are not talking about a regular pick-up truck, BUT Commercial trucks. BIG difference, not too mention the fact if they are doing this shady shit, they are doing other shady shit, just like this house that has the illegal basement apartment, yet the owner says that is not the case. Right..................

True, but you can only park them if is not a business being run out of the house.

Yikes. Someone missed the R.I.F. program in elementary school.

Stop grandstanding, doesn't become you. We are not the enemy. Vans with commercials plates get ticketed. The favorite trick for certain ethnic groups that they run businesses out of their homes and have the nabes flooded with cars.
That is also a big no no. But, calling 311 will get 120-200 complaints recorded with nothing being done. So the option here is document everything, pictures, dates, plates and call the IRS, NYS Dept of Taxation. They will listen to you!

Genius Chinese....probably paid over a million bucks but collects $2500/ mo. Even a 10 year treasury yields 3%.....they pay too much for property and then silently choke on it...

@Richard

Have no fear my friend. They are a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them.
I see houses purchased for a lot money just to tear them down and build mansions.
A bit of gambling, prostitution, drinking, renting extra floors, garages, spots, import/export - so they have all bases covered. Since they only pay property taxes, but no business tax, license fee, fines, tickets - they have the system figured out in very minute details! Now add the can collectors that invade the streets at pickup times and we are getting somewhere.
You see?

Why do we care if it's in the driveway and not taking up parking on the street, you ask??? Well, we used to have a commercial ice cream truck parked in the driveway next door many years ago when my mother was alive. First, we know here in Queens how close the property lines and driveways are next to one's neighbor. Well, each and every morning at 5am they would start that huge truck and have it running for God knows how long. The noise, the fumes, especially the fumes in the summer time entering the bedroom window right where the neighbor's driveway is located....Awful!!! And let's be real, most of these trucks are not kept up to legal exhaust standards. So that's why we care that it's in someone's residential driveway. Because homeowners should not be subject to early morning, loud, fume-spewing commercial trucks which are parked right under our windows in our neighbor's driveway. By the way, my mother made calls to everybody she could get her hands on --- politicians, police, the block association and everyone in between. You better believe they got rid of that loud, smelly eyesore. That was back in the late 80s/early 90s. RIP, Mom!!

I ice picked a car's tire that was repeatedly blocking my driveway.
Message received,
A sharp nail at the end of my cane and I went unobserved.

"Sometime vigilante justice is the only way"

A friend used a trolley jack under the drive axle. Pull it right out like a tricycle and wheel it in the middle of the street. Takes 10 seconds, gets towed real fast and the assholes never come back.
I'm beginning to think 311 and DOB is being told "don't do shit" unless its a real potential life-death situation that can come back and bite DOB or mayor in the ass if something bad happens.
