Why go home?
Homeless immigrants without legal status can often linger in city shelters for years. That's because they don't qualify for many of the housing subsidies that are used to move people out, leaving them in an indefinite limbo.
The Park Avenue shelter is specifically for homeless women over the age of 45. It holds 84 women...up to 13 percent are undocumented and none are pressured to go back to their homelands unless they want to and it's a good viable option.
The city's Department of Homeless Services says it doesn't track immigration status so it doesn't know how many undocumented immigrants are in its system.
