Gang Initiation Day leaves 3 people shot and 30 arrested

From the NY Post:

Scores of gangbangers marauded through Times Square and nearby streets last night, storming businesses and harassing pedestrians as three people were shot in possibly related violence.

Hundreds of cops struggled to disperse the youths.

One man was shot in the ankle on West 41st Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues.

Early this morning two people were shot at 34th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues. Their conditions were not immediately known. Twenty young men were seen fleeing the scene.

And a woman was hit by a bb pellet at West 51st Street and Seventh Avenue. Her wound was not life-threatening, authorities said.

Police were trying to determine whether the three incidents were related to the disturbances.

A cop trying to break up a rowdy group of youths outside the police substation at West 42nd Street was taken away on a stretcher after he sustained a knee injury.

At least 30 people, including seven juveniles, were arrested by early this morning.

In past years, the NYPD and businesses have beefed up security in the area on Easter Sunday, which has become known in certain circles as "Gang Initiation Day."

Marauding bands of white kids from Stuyvesant High School with names like Chad, Colton, and Connor go pillaging through Times Square?

I was exiting the 42nd Street Port Authority station on the 8th Avenue line around 11pm. The exits at the uptown side of the station were closed off. When I finally reached an open exit, there was a large group of youths heading to get through the turn style. As I reached the stairs, I realized they were fleeing tear gas which had been spraying into the stairwell.
I don't know what caused the use of tear gas but it seems like a flagrant abuse of power.

Yes, how dare those fascist police use tear gas on a bunch of youths!

Why, according the the Post article, these poor youths were only "storming businesses and harrassing pedestrians as three people were shot in possibly related violence"!

Tear gas, indeed! The police should have used feather dusters and handed out lollipops to these AP Calculus and chess club students!

A blatant example of police brutality! Where's Al Sharpton when we really need him!

Judging from what happened, i would have fully supported the cops opening up with 12-gauge rounds.

Less thugs the better.

to the first anonymous:

are you crazy? what if it were YOU who was shot? would you think the cops were wrong, THEN?

Get a grip.

Do you know what's going on Phillie?

As a victim of crime I am HAPPY the cops tear gassed them. They should have gotten worse.

a mob attack is really dangerous as the victim is being assaulted by multiple people & will disperse when police arrive. it is harder to identify the attackers due to the chaos.
this was all planned out by sick people.

I hope that they are all identified & arrested to give a message to the rest of the idiots who waste everyone's time with this nonsense.

I would've perfered 3 arrested and 30 dead!

re: tear gas used
these individuals knowingly made the decision to ignore other people's civil rights. so why the sudden concern for their well being?

Anonymous said...

Gangs are dangerous and tear gas usage was appropriate. Lock them all up together, withhold food and let them kill each other. What a waste. These members will never be of any use to society. It's scary that innocent people are hurt because of ignorance and stupidity.

No regard for moral conduct and civil behavior? Must be the next generation of traffic cops.

YEP !
30 million pieces of shit (1/4 of them in NYC) giving repeated birth to future drug dealers, gang-bangers or pregnant teenage females repeating the cycle.
Ask any cop, public school teacher or security personal in private off the record.

I prefer to play it safe and avoid the Times square area altogether. It's too crowded and too many assorted characters there.

The city can make Times Square a Disney fantasy if they want but some people in that area don't know how to act.

The cops should have shot and killed all of them in the street like China does with it animals.
---nip it in the bud.

I always said NYC would quickly become worse S Central Los Angeles with this Sanctuary City Bullshit.

(actually I don't Teds full-a shit too. Some of his regional redneck directors who (most with no teeth) married illegal wetbacks got me thrown off an event for racism some years back.

Instead of tear gas, the police should have shot each one in the leg with a tranquilizer dart, rounded them all up and then jailed them. Why should the average joe be subjected to tear gas, when the criminals could be shot with tranquilizer darts? It works with animals -- and they are.

well i guess the lowlifes got bloomturd's message: less cops means more crime!! and summer hasn't even begun.

I guess cops were too busy checking grandma's purse for nuclear bombs to notice platoons of youths dressed in several gang colors walking out of the subway station.

Besides, New York is still safe, Bloomberg said something about crime being down, right?

I'm more surprised by the fact that someone in the precinct decided to file this report. I guess it was just a bit too much to ignore or fudge numbers.

Time for an enforceable curfew in the Times Square area on Easter night. 11 PM and then be gone....

Lock these kids up and dont let them mingle in prison. Dont forget though people that this gang initiation night and other gang rights in the summer have gone on in Times Sq and Herald Sq for twenty five to thirty years.

Where were large squads of riot police? Where they fired too from bloombergs genius budget plans. He says its not acceptable after the fact. Typical bloomberg.

tear gas? first of all the nypd doesnt use tear gas in situations like that. second they will never fired tear gas on a street in manhattan where other uninvolved people will be affected by it. it might possibly been pepper spray that some "horrible horrible" police officer sprayed at those honor students you saw running past you. Tear gas, great reach on that one but stop watching so much tv.
