Cuomo pushes minimum wage hike

From the Huffington Post:

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced Sunday that he plans to submit a proposal to raise the minimum wage to $11.50 an hour in New York City and $10.50 an hour in the rest of the state.

The proposal is something of a reversal for Cuomo, who less than a year ago was opposed to allowing municipalities across the state to set different minimum wages. Having several different minimum wages throughout the state, Cuomo said last February, would create chaos by forcing communities to compete against one another. The current minimum wage in New York state is $8.75 per hour, a figure that's set to rise to $9 at the end of this year.

Cuomo's position reportedly began to shift this summer when he was courting the support of the progressive Working Families Party and backed a proposal to let different municipalities set different minimum wages. Under that proposal, New York City would have been able to set a minimum wage as high as $13.13 an hour.

While labor groups are praising Cuomo's decision to raise the wage, Bill Lipton, the state director of the Working Families Party, expressed disappointment that Cuomo, who was re-elected to a second four-year term in November, did not go further.

“We applaud Governor Cuomo’s proposed increase in the state minimum wage as an important first step in the right direction,” Lipton said in a statement Sunday. “But $11.50 is almost $2 less than what he endorsed last spring. And the truth is it’s nearly impossible to raise a family in this state on even $12 or $13 an hour.”

Want the wages to go up?... just get rid of the illegal immigrants and the market will take care of that.

And rents will come down - basic supply and demand!

Oh - and get rid of uber-wealthy foreigners hiding their dirty money in uber-expensive co-ops and houses - fix that market as well!

Wonder if he wants to raise the minimum wage in Cuba?

This marks the end of the days when a high schooler or college student could get a job having no skills or experience. Increasing the minimum wage, coupled with requirements for health care at 32 hours/wk will make those jobs dry up. Employers will hire multiple people for part time to avoid the health care requirement.

These millenials will grow up with no job skills and be impossible to hire.

Way to go Andy! I guess you slept through economics in college.

this man is a phony and a sneak - has always been -- thank god I did not vote for him ever --

Another lie from Cuomo. Instead of bringing business to NY, watch how many shops start to close and move out of state where there is less corruption. His father must be turning over in his grave already.

By raising minimum wage the poor quality for less Obamacare subsidy so in a way it hurts the poor more than it helps and Washington knows this.

this man is only not an economist, but is not cognizant or emphatic of the needs of the working poor or even working families as evidenced by his proposed tax cuts he's denying for homeowners in the 5 boroughs.

this menial raise of the wage,of course a pussycrat compromise to hardline conservative cruel believers,is the equivalent of tossing food you couldn't finish at thanksgiving to the dog. Maybe this will keep food service workers and deliviries less disgruntled when they get orders from the plutorats in the pied-a-towers.

Push many more people into ineligibility for many of the subsidies that more productive middle class people have to pay for, as anon #7 cites an example of. The net effect could be that at the new minimum wage, these people may have even less net income than if the minimum wage were set below $13/hr.

Could be interesting times ahead...

Didn't Cuomo II wile tenure as HUD Secretary call for government-created lenders Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac (and banks at gunpoint) to issue loans to people working in McDonalds with no checks or credit historys ? So said in an attempt to schmooze minorities and insure re-election of Clinton ?

We all know what that brought us!! this guy is BAD NEWS !!

Raise min. wage to $15 an hour. fine.

Then cut down welfare, food stamps, rent stabilization/control, etc.

End the double-dipping.

If Governor Cuomo is truly interested in people coming together, then why did he disband last year's ethics commission that he only recently initiated, at the exact time that they were getting ready to investigate the governor himself (and the allegedly corrupt and dishonest practices of his office), that have now fallen under the purview of US Attorney Preet Bharara, to continue with a completed, honest, ethical investigation? Apparently within the Cuomo dynasty, the apple is just as rotten as the diseased tree from which it had fallen!

Cut welfare & food stamps and the city will be burned to the ground. (mostly white neighborhoods and government buildings)
Rev.Al Sharpton, LaRaza and the Mayor have guaranteed this !!

The NYS minimum wage of $1.50 during 1967 is $10.82 when adjusted for 2015 dollars.

Seems reasonable to me that we should pay people at least the same minimum wage as what we paid in 1967.

Minimum wage has been lagging behind inflation for a really long time.

What's the principle here that would limit the minimum wage to any amount?

If $11.50 is good, then $23.00 is better. Andrew, be bold.

Given the collective forces of corruption, dishonesty, dishonor, disloyalty, dereliction of public duty, dysfunction, cover-ups and political worthlessness between Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo (please US Attorney Preet Bharara, get those handcuffs around the governor's slimy wrists, already!), the remnants of middle class New York (and the majority of working poor) will continue to delay gratification by not spending for any and all non-essential living items, the local economy likewise will continue to depend of tourism, transients and elitists for commerce to prevail. In this second decade of the 21st century, anyone who works for static wages and petrified paychecks would be mad to continue to languish under a neo-fascist regime reinforced by these two rapacious and predatory con artists and impostors. All of New York State is now under the totalitarian rule of a police state, where all of the decades of government lies are now coming full circle. A perfect example of this would be how City Hall held a gun to every cop's temple, and demanded a quota system for tickets. Now, the police continue to maintain that there was never any work slowdown. One lie from the top begets another--and the taxpayer be forever damned! And it's even worse in Albany--a pay-for-play, money laundering Ponzi scheme that would make Charles Ponzi himself envious--and liken Bernard Madoff to a bit street hustler! If these two unfunny clowns don't speak of deeper levels of public adversity, beggary, obscurity, quiet desperation, helplessness, hopelessness and finally, societal collapse that reinforces anarchy--then I don't know what does!

Lipton of the Working Families Party says that the minimum wage increase is insufficient for a family to live in NYC. since when has it been the norm to raise a family on one minimum wage? And unless there are special circumstances, who in their right mind would chose one of the most expensive cities in the world to raise their family on minimum wage? Oh, I forgot.....Diblasio and his like-minded socialists can't wait to give out all those extra goodies that we, the middle class don't get and have to foot the bill for.
