There could be an additional 6,000 yellow cabs designated solely to pick up street hails in the outer boroughs if the city has its way, Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky said yesterday.
Currently, outer borough passengers can only hail down the rare yellow cabs or prearrange for livery cabs to pick them up.
“If you live in Brooklyn or Queens ... you’re either hailing a car that’s not supposed to pick you up or an unlicensed car,” Yassky told amNewYork yesterday. “Neither one is first rate service.”
Yassky is meeting with state legislators today to discuss the plan, since the sale of additional medallions requires city and state approval.

Street hails in Queens to be legal?

Who in there right mind is going to want to troll the streets of douglaston looking for cab fares...
It just doesn't work.
No thank you. I'd rather call a private cab company that be ripped off by all these foreigners who drive yellow cabs.
is this worst for downtown flushing?
Right now in Flushing if you pay attention you will see illegal Korean "Cab Companies" pick up fares at private homes. They use cell phones and the TLC has a hard time trying to stop them. A good clue is when a well dressed Asian man drives up to a home on your block, cell phone in hand and your Korean neighbor sits in the back seat of a late model 4-door Lexus or other foreign luxury car.
Great. Now we're going to have to contend with even more yellow cabs parked on the street at night. Even less parking for the rest of us.
So what is the incentive for someone to buy a mediallion for a yellow cab outside of Manhattan if black cars are competing against you? Remember no one is enforcing the law now - I don;t expect they will later.
