Crime reporting in Queens vs. Manhattan

Let's Meet Up In Queens is wondering why the sexual assault of a 19-year old in SoHo at 3:30am got more attention than the sodomization of a 6-year old in a Woodside park in broad daylight last week.

The answer: Woodside is in Queens, not Manhattan, and the child was probably not white.

Perhaps we should get our own news channel? Our own Police Department? Oh, right. Nevermind. Does anyone have the phone number to the 114th Precinct? Do they have a phone number?

Look, we already got everything from our own borough president, our own Central Park, our own newspapers, our own museum, our own politicians, even our own historical society.

Third rate. Third rate. Third rate.
Third rate. Third rate. Third rate.

If we had our own media outlet, they would only talk about the gastronomic delight of Flushing and the boundless real estate opportunities of Elmhurst.

The problem is not the concept, but exquisitly poor staffing and pathetic execution.

Funny...
I just toured SOHO yesterday
(taking about 1,000 photo/details of cast iron buildings) when I noticed that the cops were paying particular attention to the pistol range "combat stance" that I'd adopted to steady my oversized telephoto lens!

There is, noticeably much more police presence now than in the old days when SOHO used to look a little more forlorn.

Bingo! Then I suddenly realized that between NYU, Bloomingdales,
Steve Madden, tour buses, etc. there were more cops stationed per block... a veritable brigade.

Well, what with all of these upscale shops and the notable personages who now live there, SOHO now requires far more "protection"than Queens does.

After all, this has become a prime tourist/yuppie mecca.
Bloomberg would catch hell if some Iowan got groped in the midst of grabbing a "Kodak moment" with his camera phone!

I'd better not turn around too suddenly and point my long lens
in the general direction of some rookie gendarme....lest I hear the warning,"GUN" shouted out and a barrage of 9mm projectiles come heading my way.

I don't even vaguely look like a middle eastern terrorist .

Queens is filled with immigrants, remember?

Communities with immigrants gets poor services.

Remind your local pol of this the next time she or he gets all glassy eyed when the dreaded 'I' word is invoked.

Staffing levels in Queens pcts are dangerously low, guns and gangs proliferate - what does a Qns police chief do - holds a talent show.

Look, the precinct councils are filled with old timers that cling to their positions, like the community boards. The politicos will do nothing to change that, nor the local papers.

The old guard just wants to sit around, give each other awards, and escape to their summer homes (after collecting rent/and or campaign contributions.)

All this while the boro rots around them.

Then when something like Queens Crap shows up, the stupid 20 somethings that will inherit this mess say 'oh they are not politicallly correct - we can ignore them.'
