Look at the picture. It's a cellar apartment. Outlawed decades ago because they are firetraps and can't be legalized.

If you're going to rent your basement, why not just rent it out for all purposes? What's going on there during the weekend that you want your tenant out? sex parties?

no they are renting it out as an illegal hotel.

what Crapper you mean cellars and attics are not to be used as dwelling places in NYC?

laws? landlords think they are above the law.

Actually that is NOT true. If you rent out the 1st floor and the basement as a combined apartment they can sleep in the basement....

Its when they are rented separately then its illegal...

Wrong. You may only legally use the rooms in your building according to the c of o issued for it.
