Construction activity at former Caldor site

"I noticed there is construction going on at the old Caldor's site in Flushing. I was wondering if u knew what they are building there. Thanx." - anonymous

Nope, can't say that I do. Anyone out there have any clue?

Now there's an oxymoron for you.

Downtown Flushing needs a bus terminal similar to Port Authority.

It's hard enough getting out of the 7 train and not knowing whee Q65 or Q17 stop.

If flushing commons can't be used ofr a bus terminal, how about the Caldor site? It's right between the 7 train and the LIRR station- making it an ideal intermodal locations.

But alas, expect another condo-mall project.

Its some sort of mall.. I've heard a retail mall... someone else told me a food mall.. like in Asia.. all different types of fresh stuff coming in daily.. I will try to find out more..

According to inside information, it will be a Chinese (super) market and a food court selling asian food. The (super)market's owner currently own another supermarket near the Flushing library. But I would rather call it a giant vegetable and grocery store instead of a
(super)market.

Oh good. Another no roundeye supermarket and food mall. That's exactly what Frushing needs.

Whatever it is, CB7 will vote yes on it like the brain dead bobble heads that they are!

After all, "We don't want to offend any Asiatic interest in this vibrant, bustling area".

Caldor? Jeez - run for it, Marty, it's the Libyans!

A past district manager of CB7 was once asked, what does Flushing really need (about 22 years ago)?

Her reply was, "A supermarket".

It looks like yet another one is headed to Caldor's.

Yeah...like what the area needs is more Chinese goods.

It's high time the PR boys & girls at the Flushing Chamber Pot Of Commerce cut the "multi cultural" ballyhoo.

Flushing is a mono-cultural Asian dump THAT EXCLUDES ALL OTHER CULTURES!

Im guessing they are gonna fill that space with hundreds and hundreds of stalls arranged in a mouse-maze like pattern, constructed out of reused plywood and random furniture, as up to usual standards for asian shopping areas.

Im sure it will be all up to code as well.

As if that area is not crowded enough. Now we will have hundreds of people running around with 10 red bags full or groceries taking 10 minutes to get on the bus and blocking everyone. Parking sucks in that area as it is and now this.

BTW, isn't that a two story building?

Oh goody, new retailers to steal Grandpa's fruits and vegetables out of his backyard on Hawthorne Ave. and sling them on Roosevelt Ave.

I love a good pop culture movie reference.

What i never understood how they can walk around the streets of NYC and on the subways and buses with those red bags with unwrapped, unprotected vegetables hanging out of the top? That cant be sanitary!

I don't care if you do rinse them when you get home, i would not eat lettuce/seaweed that has been exposed to a NYC subway car.

Better them than me. Bleeahhh!

But it might be an example of "what doesn't kill me only makes me stronger."

Was this Alexander's before it was Caldor?

It's called cooking them.

Its tentatively called the New World Mall. Its supposedly a 4-story asian style market, however I imagine it will have other retailers in there as well. But who knows? They just built Queens Crossing...Flushing doesnt need another one of these, ALTHOUGH it will get rid of the useless ugly eyesore that was Caldors.

I read it was 4. I even so an architect's projected model and it may have a glass facade, which would actually look pretty nice.

It is not going to be a supermarket. It will be a luxury shopping mall.

Trust me.

Great! More stores where roundeyes will feel unwelcome.

That's just a lame "argument." I'm a roundeye and don't use plastic bags. I put my produce in my canvas bag, loose. I'm alive. If you go to a farmers market, they're going to put your produce in a plastic shopping bag and hand it to you, if you want it in a bag at all.

What's one more eyesore in the pile of shit that is downtown Frushing?

No, it wouldn't look nice. Glass enclosed shit is still shit. Shit in a see-thru box is still shit.

Great! More stores where roundeyes will feel unwelcome.

Not feel unwelcome, BE unwelcome.

I live in Downtown Flushing and everywhere I walk, oranges and other round produce are always rolling over the pavement and onto the street and into puddles of god knows what.

And the supermarket workers just pick them up and return them to the racks with the other produce.

Even if they do get washed and cooked when they go home, I wouldn't be able to stop imagining where it's been beforehand.

is Caldor still on the building and I may go there next week to see it, will it still be there?
