Democratic voters dump Marge Markey

It's been 18 years, and just like that, she's gone.

Huge congratulations to Brian and all the people that made this happen.

This primary is the first tear in the Queens Democratic Machine's armor - and it's a big one - particularly since this is Virginia Joe Crowley's former Assembly seat before he was so graciously given his Congressional job without so much as an election.

I met Marge Markey years ago at a meeting when I was working with Christina Wilkinson, Bob Holden and others to try to save St. Saviour's Church in Maspeth. I was not impressed with her then, and Markey's arrogant and childish behavior during the past few weeks in particular practically screamed for her removal.

The Queens Machine cabal - and that is an accurate term - is a definitive symptom of what is ailing our borough. Arrogance. Cynicism. Tone-deafness. Corruption. Entitlement - all of this and more can be dealt with, if only we can get rid of this crowd and elect people who are competent and actually care about what happens in our neighborhoods.

Let's keep it up, people!

Crowley will appoint Margie somewhere else . She'll pop up again. They usually do, unfortunately.

Mister Brian Barnwell will learn quickly when he arrives in Albany.

No Committee chairmanships, no discretionary funds for his district, no support or bringing to vote any of his proposed legislation, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Mister Brian Barnwell, the people of Maspeth and the rest of the district WILL BE PUNISHED!

Realize that he is a democrat in the New York State Assembly. The democrats hold and control that house and are well versed in bringing their legislators into lockstep!

You have essentially replaced one worn out, faded and splintering deck chair on the Titanic with a shiny new one.

We will see the same results...

Look around your nabe. If conditions are getting worse and you've got the same old gang representing you, there is only one conclusion to arrive at.
THEY HAVE NOT BEEN DOING THEIR JOBS.
THEY ARE DOING FOR THEMSELVES , IN WHATEVER FASHION THAT FURTHERS THEIR CAREERS!

Of course!
Similarly, Senator Avella also learned quickly up in Albany , that his reform politics were not welcome or wanted.
Albany is the proverbial hole in the wall where political thieves and gangsters hide out.

That was a good old fashioned butt kicking.
And she deserved every single kick.

The people of Maspeth are rejoicing and Bishop DiMarzio is smiling.

This hopefully is a sign of things to come. Hey Addabbo and Crowley, are you paying attention. Lizzy, get one of your staffers to read this to you.

Meet the new boss.

Same as the old boss.

Won't get fooled again.

Well this is just the beginning and I am not surprised. Maspeth needs a change.

Re: Maspeth Homeless Shelter.

Tony Nunziato hugging Barnwell, his November opponent, at the latter's primary victory party?

Politics makes strange bedfellows.

Anonymous said...

For all of Markey's flaws, one of her signature issues was holding private schools accountable for past abuses of students. What will be the future of this legislative item now that Markey is out of office?

Secondly, even when an insurgent defeats a County stalwart, the County organization then makes nice and welcomes the former insurgent into its ranks (see Dromm, Van Bramer, Rozic, Daneek Miller) Avella and Sanders are the exceptions here.

It is possible for Barnwell to maintain his image as an independent voice in Albany, but it won't be easy.

Anonymous said...

Barnwell picked the right side in the shelter fight. Enjoy today's victory but beware, look what's coming. https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-awards-development-first-1200-supportive-housing-units

Pfffff.

I guess that's why Tony had to join the Independent Democratic Conference, headed by Sen. Jeff Klein, which caucuses with the Republicans. So even if the Democratic machine leadership tried to punish and ignore him, the IDC doesn't.

You are out of your minds to think Brian is going to handle politics of Maspeth and State Assembly. And the way he handled Markey - regardless - she has done ALOT of good for Maspeth in her run - maybe it was her time but stop with the "shes done nothing". He showed no respect to his same party opponent...But he wouldn't know he should with ZERO life or politic experience.

Brian stood on the street about the hotel but did he have ONE contact to call that could make a difference?? Do you think anyone in politics is going to take this weirdo little kid serious???

Thank goodness Tony is running ! Tony & Holden tried but never succeeded but quickly jumped on the Dems side when the shelter drama came about with Brian to get Markey out... to now move ahead to beat Brian and finally getting the spot!!! Well done. You won my vote for that chess move!!!

I'm sure this will be another comment that wont get approved and posted but I hope you all have a nice day!

I'm sorry, but what the hell has Marge Markey done for Maspeth? She had nothing to do with the truck bypass yet called a press conference to announce it (trucks still barrel down Grand on a regular basis), funded a bunch of afterschool and senior programs that Barnwell or Nunziato could just as easily do. I don't get her groupies, never have.

UM - that's the reason she lost! Why only private schools? Divine intervention I say!

What?——is Maspeth the ONLY blighted, dysfunctional and neglected town in Queens County??? There are dozens around! What about all of the filth surrounding Ozone Park and Richmond Hill——you know, Joe Addabbo/Eric Ulrich/Michael Miller terrain? There is massive piles of street filth and garbage on the corner of 108th Street (at Liberty Avenue), and straight up 111th Street, starting at Jamaica Avenue and continuing down the strip to Atlantic Avenue——It looks like a de facto landfill station! And, wasn't Eric Ulrich supposed to clean up the endless graffiti scribble that continues to plague and depreciate these neighborhoods with a vengeance?

Further, lazy homeowners are loathe to sweep in fron of their properties and sidewalks, and partially into the street, where I have witnessed drivers having to park their cars over piles of uncollected debris, stones, rocks and overall garbage blowing into the gutters.

Likewise, get off of your fat, lazy asses, Addabbo, Miller and Ulrich——and if any single one of you jokers actually stuck your ugly mugs into these neighborhoods to see for yourselves what kind of endless filth can be seen at will, then maybe you'd be motivated to FINALLY start earning your vastly overpaid, publicly funded paychecks!

Dear Maspeth resident (Markey Asswipe):

Margaret Markey did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for Maspeth or Middle Village. She did more for her family than our community.

She gave $100,000 to Queens Tourism and millions to programs outside of the district. Also millions to Queens Botanical Garden. That money should have been put in the district.

If elected Brian Barnwell will work.

Markey never worked. Look at her voting record, on controversial issues in Albany, she was absent. Just like she's been on ALL big issues facing Maspeth.

I had to deal with Markey regarding an issue with the RKO Keith's Flushing theater .
Even back when she worked for Shulman's borough hall, she was arrogant, nasty, and self centered.
I was shocked to have to absorb her adolescent retorts even on the phone.
Soon after losing my political virginity and had to face some hard reality about a politician's disposition,
I realized that these are a pol's real talents. Boy, was I a babe in the woods.
Glad to see her gone, at last! Like to see a few other political tyrants go.

Marge mallarchy gone!
Finally!
There is hope for better yet!

Markey's groupies were few and far between although they're out there somewhere I guess. Good riddance. Especially to Mike (weakbrain) Armstrong and Eileen (too tired to work) Boland.

Anonymous said...

Her groupies are core Democrats who know nothing of the issues.Their philosophy is "My father was a Democrat-My mother was a Democrat and I am a Democrat." Ask them what she has done for Maspeth or what issues are in their own communities and they will stare blankly at you and repeat that montra about their family always voting Democratic. But you people are knocking Brian about his lack of experience and how he will find it hard in Albany. Remember he hasn't been elected yet. He will be running against Republican Tony Nunziato. Tony has years of civic experience and is at the front of every issue that Maspeth has had to face including the By-Pass plan and the Homeless Shelter. He and his family have lived here for over 30 years. I think that Tony brings more to the board than Brian meaning no disrespect to this fine young man.

Asswipe- nice. Im sorry I dont fully agree with you that must mean Im terrible and deserve to be spoken to like that. I didnt insult your point of view or you - but you can come at me?

Do you not understand how money is allocated thru government. You have no idea on certain restrictions on certain monies. I dont know about those specifics but I bet if you get all the info ( thats public ) theres reason why it was done.

Why continue to insult anyone is my point? Even if you dont agree people work hard doing what they believe is right. Its just bad taste...

of course Tony brings more and if people have a brain he will win ... why do you think he supported Brian. Bc he tried a few times and couldnt beat Markey.

Im sure this will be another post not going up bc Im not attacking people!

Of course

Well to her credit she tried to do something about the Steinway Mansion and it was not even in her district -- while the four electeds whose district it was in were the only people responsible for destroying it.

You have to give the Masepth folks credit for fighting for their rights though. The Astoria community cower whimpering into a corner every time their smirking local talent saunters into a room.

addabbo should be next
what has he done other than have garbage day
we pay taxes to have our trash taken away

then he gets all the cheers for such a great job
where has he bean with all the shelter fights
i'm sure he's voting for cuomo's shelter plan

Word on the street is the chair of cb2 Denise keehan-smith stood outside the big 6 co ops on primary day acting like an unhinged lunatic threatening volunteers who distributed Barnwell flyers. Good to see the county stronghold (big 6) vote the right way on this one.

Not that she didn't need to go, but it's completely unfair that only D and R get to vote in primaries.

I'm truly scared for Maspeth now that Brian has won. Brian doesn't know Maspeth. He comes from the island. It's alittle different here than there. Brian swooped in when Maspeth was vulnerable. Just because he protests down at the hotel doesn't mean he's the best for Maspeth. He's never experienced Maspeth. Did he go to our neighborhood schools. Experienced going to IS 73 with it being so over crowded that if your last name is at the end of the alphabet, you didn't get a textbook for the year. Was he there when on 9/11 when the neighborhood came together for our firehouse who lost 19 on that day? Did his parents have to pay thousands of dollars to send him to a private high school because his local high school was like Grover Cleveland? Has he experienced Maspeth during the winter, Christmas tree lightings on Grand? Has he been here when our streets were not plowed for days after a snow storm? Has he been here to stand with Maspeth for parades and memorials besides trying to campaign? Does he know the great programs we have like Maspeth Town Hall, CYO, Kiwanis etc? Did anyone think when they voted for him, the ramifications of their vote. Once this homeless shelter situation is done, what is he going to do for us? He ran on the homeless shelter that's it. He's so inexperienced he sits on Facebook trashing people who dont agree with him. That's not a leader, that's an immature person who doesn't belong in Albany. Before you go out an vote on November 8 for State Assembly read about both candidates and their history. Look passed the homeless shelter because that's not the only issue when it comes to Maspeth.

Yeah. Brian has never "experienced" Maspeth.

Not like Marge Markey. Joe Crowley. Elizabeth Crowley. Dennis Gallagher.

What's your point again?

If that's the kind of people from Maspeth - or Glendale or Middle Village for that matter - that we need to represent us - these fucking people who have been stealing from us, lying to us and screwing us over for years - I'll give the new kid from Long Island a chance.

Anonymous said...

Oh tell me how Brian has been here for so long. Experienced Maspeth through the years. Please tell me what drama club in Maspeth he was in growing up? Basketball team he played for? He's experienced Maspeth for what two years just to start his campaign. His first fundraiser was at Mccanns which is in his hometown. He didn't have his first fundraiser at Oneills or Maspeth Ale house. How can we elect someone who doesn't really know our needs, doesn't know our neighborhood.

Did Barnwell show up at Banks' house?

Love all the comments slamming me. Try to respond to them all

1) whoever said where was I on 9/11? I lost a cousin firefighter on 9/11 named Edward white. To imply I don't care about such is a nice insult. Before making such maybe find out who I am first?! You obviously know nothing about me.

2) tony is a good guy and would do great for the community as he has for decades. If tony wins I will work with him as well. I consider him a friend and I will continue to be his friend. Either tony or I would face pushback from the Albany machine as well. Both of us would face the issue of fighting for allocation of resources to the community because BOTH would be new members. Markey kept floating that talking point, but everybody has to start new some time. Are you implying we should keep voting her in until she decides to retire? Also these politicians receive money for their district if they do whatever the bosses say. Yes resources for the community is vital but we also need reform of a system that rewards doing whatever the political bosses say. also somebody has to start new and they would face the challenge of gathering resources for the community. You seem to forget Markey started new 18 years ago

3) yes I went to high school in Long Island. Said that multiple times and from the beginning. If you would like to call my parents and yell at them for that I can give you their contact info. My family has lived in woodside since the 1930s thank you very much.

4) no experience because I am only 30? Lawyers draft the legislation that becomes law. I have been a lawyer for 5 years. I won't have to rely on anybody to tell me what the laws say because I know the case law. If you are implying I have no experience with making shady deals with other members of the legislature then yes I have no experience making shady deals and I don't care to.

5) I treated Markey unfairly? How so? By pointing out her attendance record? I never said anything about her personality and in fact in multiple interviews I said she was a nice person.

6) No I didn't attend the banks house protest. Was announced on election night and I was not informed until wed. I already had a meeting planned for thur night. I will continue to be at the protests going forward and would love for you to come talk to me about not showing up.

7) Whoever said I magically appeared because of the shelter issue ignores I was talking to voters all over the district including maspeth for a year prior to the shelter issue.

8) whoever said I had my first fundraiser at mccanns is wrong. Look it up. Had a couple in woodside prior to that. As I said before yes I went to high school in Long Island. That was 12 years ago

Sorry if I missed anything. Take care.

Brian Barnwell said...

Also time line of my life.

Born and lived in woodside till I was 8. Attended Corpus Christi school. Moved to Long Island till 18. Moved back to woodside (same complex my family Has been in since 1930s) 12 years ago.

Also for whoever mentioned markey's victims bill fails 2 mention she carved out exemptions for her lobbyists for the last 6-8 years. See the notice of claim issue. Ken Lovett of the daily news even mentioned it in an April 1st article. That exemption wouldn't have allowed thousands of victims to sue the city for child abuse. People didn't know this because the notice of claim is a legal issue. Ironic markey ever mentioned this exemption.
