Queens still reads

From CBS880:

A group of women from Queens are making an active effort to keep bookshops alive in the borough.

In the beginning of January, Barnes and Nobles closed their locations in Bayside, Fresh Meadows and Forest Hills. Now, Natalie Noboa, 23, of Forest Hills, has teamed up with a few of her friends to start the Queens Bookshop initiative, dedicated to bringing bookstores back to the borough.

Noboa and her friends passed out flyers to spread the word about getting another bookstore opened in the area. They are also relying heavily on social media to spread the word.

So, do we beg someone to invest heavily in a dying business, or do we petition the government to open another money losing endeavor with taxpayers money.

Have you heard about a "kindle" and Amazon? We are in a world of instant gratification.
Real stores have difficulties effectively competing with online retailers. So many additional costs!

If it is such a good and profitable idea, why do these ladies not invest their own money?

They rather just pay for a few fliers and petitions and let some other sucker lose his money in this fools errand...

I stay away from these " Go Fund Me " schemes. Far away.

The store left because the landlord increased the rent so B&N didn't want to pay. Get ready for another Target which is taking its place.

I bet not a single person behind this initiative has ever started a storefront business that's lasted for even a year.

The should invest their time in the local Library!

if barnes and noble didn't charge 30% more for a book than on their own f*&$^ing website i might have bought something there. i was there late last month with a coupon they emailed me and didn't buy anything.

I want to amend the petition to make sure the store sells/rents betamax! I need somewhere to get the newest movies!

Real books don't rely on batteries in order for them to be read. A kindle is great but nothing beats a hard cover novel or newspaper. The experience is very different. I am more focused on what I am reading when it is on paper than on an LED screen. But that's just me....

How about you just go to the LIBRARY! Also, the books there are free! I know, amazing.

Right now I'm awaiting 6 books to arrive via Amazon. She's only 23 years old and I'm an alte kakker.

The library is over run with dangerous gangbangers. And that's the employees. I keep far away from the Queens Boro Public Library.

Must be a Republican since she is willing to cut down tree's for paper to make books no one will read.

BAH, even local public libraries should be shuttered. Let the city give everyone a kindle and free wifi access via the new citywide kiosk systems. Libraries are so last millenium. - alfster

Yes - I love a good book.

I have an entire library of real books.

Many first editions, personalized and signed by the authors.

Has anybody read The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals by Saul D. Alinsky, or the The Qur'an?

However, the majority show up from Amazon and Ebay.

Unfortunately my reading has fallen behind following this and other blogs...

The problem with modern book stores is they will carry 800 copies of Trump's "Crippled America", or whatever schlock that got a Oprah sticker on in this week, but anything worthwhile to read is nowhere to be found.

I only read books that tell me republicans are evil and destroyed the country, that's what my college professor tought me.

There is only one book that I feel that everyone should own, "The Holy Bible"

While other commuters are busy with their addictive and pointless phone games, I still read books on my ride to work. Mostly from libraries.

My solution to the shortage of book stores is simple: organize book exchanges with your neighbors. Use your apartment building lobby or laundry room as the shelf. You can also start a Little Free Library in your neighborhood. For more information, visit www.littlefreelibrary.org.

Also, in ethnic neighborhoods, book stores are still going strong. On Main Street, there are two Jewish book stores. On 108th Street, there is a Russian book store. In Flushing, more than I can count in Chinese and Korean.

I used to read books.

Then I got the internet.

Now I'm too busy reading to have time to read.

Trees "cut down" for paper et al. do not need saving. The logging and paper industry abundantly replenish with new plantings those trees that are cut down. There is no shortage of trees. That slogan you often read or hear "Save a Tree" is utter nonsense. Trees do not need saving. That slogan just makes the dopes feel good. Just like that waste-of-time recycling.

Must be nice to get free room and board and be able to have hobbies just because you put out and do the dishes. Thanks, ladies. Gonna vote another commie into office next year?

In Queens we sure love our "ethnics", don't we, Sergey!

Never happen! It ain't cost effective!
Ink on paper is passé. Just crawl into an inglenook and pull out your Nook.
The Nook was the first instrument to foretell the replacing of the book.
Case closed! Next!

Yeah?
The things that you're liable to read in the Bible, they ain't necessarily so.
But do not vote for Trump. He's a blithering baboon with no real plans for change.
He loves to hear himself shout.
