Legislators say MTA should make fares equal across the board

From the Forum:

The City Council’s Queens delegation this week announced its unanimous support for the Commuter Rail Fare Equalization Proposal.

All 15 members of the Queens contingent have endorsed Resolution 670, calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to equalize commuter rail fares for riders traveling within city limits to that of New York City Transit subways and buses, and provide a free transfer between all three modes of transportation.

At six hours and 18 minutes per week, city residents currently suffer the longest work commute of any large city in the nation, according to City Councilman I. Daneek Miller (D-St. Albans), who introduced Res. 670 in April. But for those in so-called “transportation deserts” – such as Bayside, Southeast Queens or the Rockaways – commutes can exceed 15 hours per week.

The U.S. Census Bureau classifies this as an “extreme commute,” Miller has said.

Commuter rail fare equalization, according to Miller, will increase access to over 40 Metro North and Long Island Rail Road stations within the five boroughs, and serve to shorten commute times. The former transit union official said he believes that improved access to commuter rail transit will also spur development in communities serviced by the railroads.

Yes - but how will the RR Administration pay all the bogus early retirement due to disability pensions? You know - the ones where the ticket punchers make $90K because they hurt their thumbs.

It's a great idea but that will be the end of what little is left of any civility on the LIRR - more seats will be ripped and it will smell like a urinal 24/7!

Bayside...LOL....a "transportation desert"?
Hell...it's a cultural desert. Much of Queens is a cultural desert.
Oh...Theater In The Park PS 1 is supposed to compete with the golden isle, Mahattan's , attractions?
Queens is basically a bedroom mentality community.
We work, play, dine in the best part of NYC that provide these opportunities...MANHATTAN!
And the Rockaways were once a summer resort. WTF do you move to the boonies for and expect swift commutes?
Maybe on a rocket sled or hydrofoil.

More free stuff.

Sounds good to me...

While riding the LIRR is expensive compared to the MTA subway and buses, the great thing about it is one does not have to deal with all the low class behavior and actions of slob and low-class people that make riding the MTA subway and buses hell. One can actually enjoy riding the LIRR for the most part in peace and comfort.

Can we at least have one damn thing that is nice without fucking it up by letting the folks who ruin communities and public transportation with their bad behavior. Unless said folks are going to learn to act like civilized people, but somehow I don’t see that happening. I mean has one ever taken a ride on the Jamaica bus lines, FUCKING AWFUL, low-class ghetto transportation at its worst

Great, just what I want to see on the LIRR, “it’s showtime folks” or “Sorry to interrupt you ride, but….”

But then Mr. Miller, like most elected officials do not have to belittle themselves by riding fucked up NYC public transportation like the subway and the buses. Because if they did, their would be major improvement.

Just another government union stooge driving us toward Greek style bankruptcy. Screw them and vote trump.

'Low-class' behavior is just another euphemism that white americans use to descrive ethnic minorities. I belive Italians were once thought as low class and greasy when they first arrived to america in the last century. Joe Moretti needs a history lesson...

Hell NO! I ride the LIRR to get away from the dirt, filth, and noise. The LIRR has its own culture and I like it as it is. I stopped riding the bus after seeing bedbugs on it. I don't want them on LIRR. It's worth it to pay the extra fare. Again Hell NO!

Which members of the Queens delegation take mass transit to go to City Hall? don't they all drive to work and park at assigned spots? isn't this hypocrisy?

Low class is low class. It knows no color boundaries.

In Flooshing you have low class Chinese. In Jamaica you have low class people of color.
In 1900-1920s NYC you had low class Italians.

Am I supposed to feel guilty being forced to ride with the "wretched refuse" from somebody else's "teaming shores"?
Hell, no!
My only refuge from the overcrowded #7 line at Main Street is the LIRR.
The expense is worth the tranquility before I have to begin a hectic work day.
So FU, you phony liberal!

Anonymous said...

Let the low class earn more money to afford the LIRR.
That's what I did. I am low middle working class person of color and I DO NOT want to ride alongside some of my
trashy brothers and sisters. So now you know!

-----------------------------

And here is another case of some anonymous asshole making a false statement, low-class is low-class, where the hell did I mention anything about color or race in my comment.

I don't need a history lesson from some asshole and an asshole that likes to hide behind an anonymous title that does not know how to spell and as usual, gets off of the damn topic as opposed to sticking on point. Fox News would love to hire you.

Does this mean that with a single swipe of a Metro Card I should be able to get to Montauk?

You are a certifiable idiot race baiter.
The Italians have a rich history, they were not running around with spears in the 70-s 80-s.
And no, I'm not Italian, but I respect them.

It's nice to see Urkel grew up and got a job!

Can't we all just get along?

Low class is low class. Long Island has LOTS of low class white people. They are actually worse because the black people already had a strike against them because of the color of their skin. What is the white person's excuse?

Just ride LIRR out of Penn on a Friday/Saturday nite, you will see the loud and drunk examples.

Better yet: after a Met game.

Even better: St. Patrick's Day!

and the 7 line is just a cattle car. I would pay extra not to ride it.

Right on Joe Moretti!
Notice how this dumb ass spells "american"....without a capital "A".
Now that's really low class illiteracy!
What grade did you finish, fella?

Anonymous said...

Everything seems to be "Whitey's" fault and everybody is a racist.
How about some of you lazy arrogant dumb asses try acting a little more civilized.

Anonymous said...

LIRR will have to make room for the bums and their shopping carts, the dancing teenagers and the daily fights. Good luck with that. LIRR is expensive for a reason to keep out the low class people. Low class = people who do not know how to act with class. It does not mean a certain color of people. I have seen every color on the bus and subway acting like they have no dam home training.

Anonymous said...

What grade did you finish, fella?

2 classes like Amtrak.

Everything seems to be "Whitey's" fault and everybody is a racist.

You know people keep up this nonsense meanwhile the banksters are ripping everybody off.

Regardless of color, creed or nationality first and foremost we are human beings.
One should be judged by his/her actions. Nothing else.
The race card is something that MSM pulls out every now and then to make sure conquer and divide is alive and well.
Pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Nonsense......pay up or take the bus.

Anonymous said...

If you choose your words carefully, then no one will label you a racist.

Anonymous said...

Not a great idea. The LIRR needs billions to fix the problems ailing that system. If fares are dropped for a portion of the riding public it will become less reliable. How will the scammers getting thousands in false disability payments get paid?? LOL

Anonymous said...

If the Express Bus had a john, I wouldn't need to take the LIRR after beering at the bar.

Anonymous said...

I'm with the majority of Crappers here. I think we need to INCREASE the LIRR fare as the last 5 years have seen an influx of the people I try to avoid by taking the LIRR instead of the bus. Like the white girl the other day (very College Point)who was asked at Little Neck to turn down her rap music by a business man and she cursed him out.

Anonymous said...

No, bad idea. That will only draw in the trash.

Thats why i like taking the 'Express Bus' from queens into the city, even though it takes the same amount of time. Its quiet, climate control, and free of human garbage.

Anonymous said...

Anonymoos'

That white girl with the loud music was acting just like every young millennial nowadays. They think they know more than everyone. Parents gott a do their jobs !!

Regardless of the merits of this idea (or not), aren't there some really important issues in the city that "legislators" should be working on? Crime, transportation expansion, overcrowding, corruption, health services, the control of the city by real estate interests, the homeless problem etc. etc. come to mind.....

Anonymous said...

I'm so glad to see everything boil down to race for some.

Thanks, obama.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who behaves in a civilized manner will be accepted, regardless of race creed or color.
I prefer to ride in peace and comfort. It is worth the price considering the alternative option of riding in a subway cattle car.

Anonymous said...

>I'm so glad to see everything boil down to race for some.

It's a good way to distract people from the issues. What ever it is, someone will try to muddy the waters by bringing up race, no matter how relevant or irrelevant.

Anonymous said...

hey anonymous,

Describe "very College Point" to me. I'd like to see just how narrow your narrow-mindedness truly is.

Anonymous said...

Someone is forever pulling the race card when they want to cheat on facing the real issues.
Uncivilized is uncivilized. If the shoe, or color fits, wear it!

You had open enrollment. You've got an equal rights ammendment.
Now we need an equal opportunity transportation act?
Pull up your pants. Your asses are showing! Get with the program.
