AG slaps car dealerships

From NY1:

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is suing some car dealerships in Queens for allegedly illegally inflating car prices.

Wednesday, Schneiderman's office announced the lawsuit, which claims that several Koeppel dealerships throughout Queens, owned by the Koeppel family, illegally sold "after-sale" services, such as identity theft protection and credit repair, to more than 1,400 customers.

As a result, customers were overcharged without their knowledge, according to the state attorney general's office.

The suit claims that between Jan. 2013 and Nov. 2014, the dealerships collected more than a million dollars through the practices, costing some costumers up to $2,000.

Don't all auto dealers try to sell "after sales" services?

The Attorney General will fine the Koeppel dealerships.

The State will get a windfall of fines and the car owners get NOTHING.

The car owners will join a class action lawsuit.

The class action lawyers will take 99% and the owners overcharged customers will each get a check for $0.97

The customers did receive the parts and services.

"Buyer Beware"!!!

Wait. Did they illegally inflate car prices, or did they sell "after-sale" services? That's two different issues. If they inflated car prices I want to know because I bought a car (paid cash) from them. If they illegally sold after-sale services, I don't care because I'm not stupid enough to buy identity protection or credit repair from a car dealer.

Great start. Now all the AG has to do is investigate the other 1,000 dealerships in Northern Blvd that stretch all the way to LIC, specially 'Major World' (The Crazy Eddie's of car Dealerships)...

I bought a car from Koeppel 3 years back---a very shady outfit. That old fart Howard Koeppel has his smiling mug everwhere hanging up in the dealership and in his newspaper adds. What nerve. He's a real scum-bag.
