LIC residents express frustration with MTA

From Fox 5:

Frustrated and angry New Yorkers packed a restaurant in Queens Wednesday night for an emergency town hall meeting about the service disruptions on the 7 subway line.

One after another they vented to local Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer as well as staff members from the MTA/NYC Transit.

They said that the weekend service changes on the 7 train are way too disruptive and that the MTA did not do a good enough job to inform riders of the changes and how to cop with them.

Some residents also complained about the noise created by MTA construction equipment.

"NYC Transit apologizes for the inconvenience to our customers," the agency said in a statement when the changes were announced in January. "These service upgrades are essential to operating a safe and efficient service. The 7 line presents a special challenge in that we have a short window of opportunity to perform this work, essentially between late September and April."

There are plenty of frustrated people in NY, but most, some with real life and death issues, are ignored.

Developers have lots of money tied up here. Any interruption of its march to yuppie heaven - and like one well placed topedo on a capital ship - this community could slide back under the flood-prone toxic brownfields it really is.

And a lot of very important people will be unhappy.

But, as the sun rises in the morning, NYC has a certain rythem to the way it works, and no yuppie can control this no matter how much they whine.

Message to tower people: interrupted train service, often for years at a time, is a fact of life in this city. Get over it kids and cope. That is how you become a real New Yorker. Don't want to? Go back to Columbus.

Message to media: move on to something more useful than a batch of stranded kids on the wrong side of the East River.

I have to agree with the previous post! For years they have been working on the "7" line and us real New Yorkers learn to deal with the interuptions in service. They really need to stop whinning. They are supplied shuttle buses and lets not forget the ferry, by the Crab House, that can take them into the city. Shit, that line has to be worked on other wise it could be shut down for weeks instead of just weekends. They need to grow up....

Are you reading my mind via the intrawebs?

Ummm, I'm going to have to disagree with you guys. I was making my way from flushing toward the city and I got trapped by this. They had some signs up, but unfortunately all of them were in chinese or korean or wahtever; none in english. I don't care about the service disruption. but get some english signs up.

Wow the vitrol here is amazing. Why begrudge someone for demanding the service we all should have. Are we in a race to the bottom where no on should be so bold as to demand better from our government? Perhaps we should sit quiety and let the buracrats and tweeders work their magic to our detriment. After all that's the Queens way right? These LIC folks are too uppity to demand the same services that Bloomberg gives to his buddies in Manhattan.

Maybe they should realize that they live in Queens now, the stepchild to Manhattan.

These are the same people that like to tell long term Queensites that if they don't like something that goes on in their backyards, they should move to Long Island.

I say time for them to toughen up.

SORRY KIDDIES YOU HAVE NO SYMPATHY. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OUR COMMUNITY WAS IGNORED IN THE PAST.

AT THAT TIME IT WAS NOT TRAIN NOISE OR SUBWAY BEING OUT OF SERVICE. AT THAT TIME WE WERE IGNORED TO BE BULLDOZED TO OBLIVION TO IMPROVE IT WITH YOU 'BETTERS.'

WELCOME TO QUEENS. HOPE YOU SPEND YOUR LIFE SAVINGS ON YOUR LITTLE NEST JUST LIKE WE DID. AND LIKE US, JUST WAIT TO YOU SEE WHAT MOVES IN NEXT DOOR OR DOWN THE HALL.

This line is old,it has to be maintained and upgraded.I'm sure no one will complain in 2 years when the digital signal system and all new subway cars are up and running.

LOL You guys are just jealous that the politicians ignore you. At this point the new LIC has more in common with Manhattan than Queens.

How are the politicians listening to you? Van Bramer is newly elected and looking to score points. He is not going to get anywhere with the MTA, just as Gioia didn't. The fact of the matter is that even if this were in Manhattan, the upheaval would go on as planned. Look at the havoc the 2nd avenue subway is causing. There are businesses being destroyed and people are living with noise outside their windows 18 hours a day.

But yeah...we're "jealous" of the new LIC because they failed to practice caveat emptor.

If you don't like it, move to Long Island.

2 points:
1. Some posters act as if the 7 train is there exclusively for the LIC yuppies to get in to Manhattan. Don't forget about all the working class people east of there.
2. When maintenance or reconstruction work is done on major highways and roads, they are not closed entirely, plans are made to accommodate traffic at a reduced flow (lane closures). No such consideration is given to the lowly mass transit riders.
The funny part is bloomurd claims people shouldn't need cars in this city. If anyone is more out of touch than the mta, it is bloomturd.

Yes, and they simply switch to the N at Queensboro Plaza and aren't bitching at meetings.

Isn't this really just a fuss caused by all the people who moved into the area around Hunters Point and Vernon-Jackson?
