Lots of dumping going on in LIC

From WPIX:

New buildings and residents are changing the look of a neighborhood in Long Island City.

As it transitions from commercial to residential, piles of trash stand out.

This story is preceded by a commercial ad. Crappy should have the courtesy to let us know! I never bothered to read the story and shut it off.

Well, well, well. My old neighborhood of Long Island City never looked like that when I was there just a few years ago. Not too different from Jamaica (maybe worse). The only difference you do not need millions of dollars to live in Jamaica.

So an ad thats a few seconds long prevents you from watching a story about a problem in Queens? That's typical. Keep your head buried in the sand.

Anon #1, very typical of the not being informed person. You sound like you live in Jamaica Queens, "What garbage are you talking about"?

I've lived in LIC since '93, and those side streets near Queens Plaza always looked like that. And Hunters Point wasn't exactly Eden, either--I remember a stripped-down car sitting next to the Citibank building under the #7 for at least a year. The idea that the streets will still look like that once every square inch is zillion dollar condos is ludicrous. There's a million reasons to "dump" on the new LIC--this isn't one of them.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that. The point is that not every square inch will be zillion dollar condos, just like Williamsburg isn't, and you're going to have slob property owners who allow this crap to fester. The fact that the piles of garbage are in front of construction fences on stalled sites is reason enough to "dump" on the new LIC, since the owners obviously packed up and took off.

Like I said: a million reasons to dump on LIC, but is every single instance of garbage on the streets of the city's largest borough gonna rate its own item? In the video, it appears as if the garbage is in front of existing, vacant buildings, not a stalled site. The Crowne Plaza sign featured shows a hotel just announced weeks ago, so it will be active soon (don't know what was attempted at the site prior, but the Street View from April '12 looks the same--and also shows six feet of garbage across the street, ON the street, although it's possibly in a dumpster). You know I dump on LIC and its absurd pretensions all the time--like I did in that Daily News comment you cited last week--but this seems pretty weak. And it was a lot worse when hookers and pimps used that area as their "office."

I am not sure why you are surprised that this story was featured. I post up every single story about garbage that is sent to me - from Maspeth to Jamaica. Why should LIC be different?

kingofnycabbies seems to be one of those people who don't think dumping is a big deal. "There was always dumping there!" Well then isn't it a good thing that someone is finally trying to get it cleaned up?

If that dumping is being cleaned up, then, no, I don't think it's a problem. By pointing out that those streets have always looked like crap, I was refuting an earlier comment that claimed otherwise. And I was not aware of the QC "all garbage, all the time" editorial policy, but will duly note it for future reference.

When I lived in LIC, I never saw anything to this extent.

Also it does not look like it is getting cleaned-up, although I am sure it will after this video aired.

Dumping is a problem period, whether is gets cleanup or not.
