City Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan) led other elected officials and several dozen advocate organizations in a City Hall Park rally Tuesday celebrating a measure that will allow roughly 800,000 non-citizens living in New York City for at least 30 days to vote in all city elections.

The measure dubbed “Our City, Our Vote ” now has a veto-proof supermajority 34 out of 51 City Council supporting the legislation guaranteeing passage at the council’s stated meeting on Dec. 9. It comes as nearly half of New York City households have a member with green card status or other undocumented status.

It also comes as a number of city lawmakers – once part of those immigrant households themselves – are leading the movement to pass the bill.

“My mom had all of her kids in a public hospital,” said City Councilmember and Brooklyn Borough President-elect Antonio Reynoso, who attended the rally. “My mom couldn’t vote for a representative that could ensure a quality education for her kids.”

Reynoso’s family came from the Dominican Republic and raised him in Williamsburg, which he now represents in the council.

“It’s about time that we finally get an opportunity where we show these representatives what we want, what we need and what we deserve at the voting booth, where it most matters,” Reynoso said.

He thanked Rodriguez and the work of the New York Immigrant Coalition, who have been organizing the rallies and the letters as part of the campaign to get the bill passed.

While Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he has “mixed feelings” about the bill because he feared that allowing noncitizens to vote might remove the incentive for people to become full citizens, Mayor-elect Eric Adams has voiced support for it.

Under the proposed legislation the New York City Board of Elections (BOE) would issue a separate voter registration form for green cardholders and other noncitizens who have the right to work. Those voters would then fill out a ballot with only New York City offices on it at the polls.

The bill also calls for training poll workers and community education campaigns to ensure every voter receives the correct ballot.

Wonderful, keep devaluing citizens' rights. Hopefully in the next election in a couple more years, more people will finally wake up and swarm the city even more with a sea of red. This should not be allowed at all. Keep voting with your feet nyc!

Baffles me how anyone thinks this is a good idea. Even big bird has his doubts.

“My mom had all of her kids in a public hospital,”

Did she ever become a citizen?

Oh the irony if these council members are then eventually replaced by socially conservative candidates whom these immigrants actually identify better with.

This is interesting. The right-wing media will misconstrue and make it appear that non-legal immigrants will be voting, which is not true since this seems to be only for green card holders and other authorized immigrants. The left-wing media will say that the measure doesn't go far enough, and that all residents, of both legal and non-legal status, should be given the vote in city elections.

This is true South American style corruption to add loyal voters to support left-wing government. What's next? Platita?

You really think on a busy election day that election workers will give the right ballots to the right people? Remember, the DA elections are state, and would not be subject to this, so we are really going to have controls in place to make this work?

Lol. Hasn't this already been the case?

By the way-what's the point of being a citizen anymore? All you get for being one is to be oppressed endlessly by rapacious politicians while they do zilch for you. If this story doesn't tell you that this has become a banana republic then nothing will.

There are many more games. First even if you don't vote, you count for redistricting, so it costs less to campaign n a district with less eligible voters. Then there are perennial green card holders who disdain us (at least illegals WANT to be here) and never WANT to be citizens or even learn the language. Then there are those who became citizens without knowing English because a translator was provided for them during the citizen exam. I personally think the perennial green cards are the most pernicious because they house, feed and indoctrinate the dangerous ones, even if these perennial green cards are little old ladies.

That's a really good point about perennial green card holders not wanting to be citizens. And the reason is that their country of origin doesn't allow dual citizenship. India is one of those countries, and I believe China as well. So now they can have their cake and eat it too, maintaining their benefits of their original citizenship, while having impact on local elections in New York City.

Also great post about the irony of immigrants, such as very religious Catholic Latino immigrants, moving the city council to the right with their socially conservative views. That's what makes this all very entertaining to watch. At least from the outside looking in.

MAKES A LOT OF SENSE..... ILLEGAL VOTES FROM ILLEGAL VOTERS

Oh sure their socially conservative. But when you get down to it they’ll vote for more handouts.

@MAKES A LOT OF SENSE..... ILLEGAL VOTES FROM ILLEGAL VOTERS

It does make sense. For example they cannot have 1 million votes for 750,000 voters. Glitch in Dominion's system. So now they will balance the numbers to *APPEAR* correct, no need for dead voters anymore.
