The Powerhouse - seeing is disbelieving

You all know what this is, but see my latest post on Curbed to find out what's going on here.

I must say that Curbed has cajones printing my stuff although they apparently drew the line at the part of my editorial that said something like, "If only I had the means to purchase a unit in this formerly toxic site. Maybe someday when I win the lottery."

Check this out: Mehandes Engineering rendering

Egads!

Of course they drew the line, they want advertising from that developer once the thing is completely crappified.

Q. What kind of chemicals
did Schwartz produce?

A. The TOXIC type.....I'm sure!

Between the emissions
from the functioning electrical power plants
located not too far away and whatever else
was probably illegally disposed of
in this former heavily industrial area.....
I don't think that I'd want to buy
a "luxury" condo within 5 miles of this site!

Not to worry.....
until your weenie starts to show signs of shriveling up and your eyes begin to glow in the dark.

Does the management offer medical insurance for that?

Crapper, you forgot to show the part of the building that will be used as the dirigible hangar.

[What a Mon-stros-ity.]

[BTW, for you early birds, Crappie will be casting her profile on the face of the full moon tomorrow (Tuesday) at approximately 4:40AM until about 5:50AM. A full-blown lunar eclipse! (next one scheduled for Feb. 2008)...Kiddies, set your alarums and get the binoculars and cameras!...Forget about Curbed..."Bang! Zoom! You're going to the moon, Crappie. The Moon!"]

I liked this place better when it was basically abandoned and you could go in there and play tennis on the tennis courts.

Wasn't the Pepsi site at one time a standard oil depo? They should just name queens west 'cancer condos'.

PS: Schwartz made glue, the building with the stacks was empty, the rest was 1/3rd chem plant, 2/3rds tennis...

I just don't get it. I guess I'm seduced by the quiet comfort of Sunnyside, but when I go over to that part of LIC I feel like I am simultaneously in Manhattan and no-where. It is like the area west of Chelsea back in the 1970s: Toxic Optimism.

Dr. Frankenstein......"It's alive" !

Notify the villagers....
tell them to bring their pitchforks and torches.
Burn it down !

This isn't adaptive....certainly not....
creative reuse of architecture.....it's amputation!

This building is a Karl Fischer and Andres Escobar project. They have developed beautiful, highly regarded buildings and conversions in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Montreal and elsewhere. I think they know a bit more about quality architecture than the critics here.

"I think they know a bit more about quality architecture than the critics here."

oh, an 'expert'!!

Experts designed the Edsel. They marketed New Coke. They developed public housing projects .....

Taste is something that is intangible. The building is an ugly joke.

Fischer and Escobar? Check out their work. Out of scale projects in working class neighborhoods seems to be a specialty. As one critic noted, its the type of building that is best viewed from inside looking out.

I personally have my eye on patronizing the pretentious heap a block from the Gowanus Canal where the hotel website claims it’s great for a 'discrete tête-à-tête. That is a great addition to any neighborhood.

Like the housing that is going up on Queens Plaza, all this junk seems to be a great place to park a 'girlfriend.' Since so much of this new money has a murky provenance, much of it from abroad, it seems naturally that so much of is be spent on a broad.

Inspired by the Chateaus of France?

Sounds like Fisher & Escobar (or their agents)
are busy posting on this site
to pimp their development and fend off criticism
of this latest abortion.

"Highly regarded" by who......their fellow "architects"?

One jerks off the other
and the other returns the favor..... I suppose!

Hey Fischer & Escobar......
we critics do have eyes
and , frankly, you've offended them !

I would have been demoted by my firm
if I had the audacity to turn in
such an atrocious building design
that lacks any real integrity or understanding.

Oh look- the wall from the old power plant was saved. This must be an "alteration," not a new building!

Escobar ?
Isn't that the namesake of an infamous drug lord ?
Pablo.....was it?

Oh well.....this building is a crime isn't it ? !!!
