It's not your grandmother's Lefrak City

The NY Post has photos of the "new" Lefrak City:

All these upgrades have made LeFrak City more desirable than ever. Its thousands of apartments are currently 98 percent full. Because of normal turnover, there are always around a dozen units available.

Currently, they range in rent from $1,900 for a one-bedroom apartment to $2,800 for a three-bedroom pad with a terrace. Several residences, in fact, have terraces; the newest units have been renovated with stainless-steel appliances, stone countertops and wood floors.

The sprawling private grounds and their newly snazzy amenities are no longer open to the public. Security cameras are posted everywhere; cheery safety officers greet everyone who passes. The vibe is less “Big Brother” and more “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”'s

I like the new, colorful flower beds that we now see from the LIE. I'm glad they are improving Lefrak. It always looked bleak.

This city needs affordable single family unattached homes. Add driveways with front/back yards with some grass.

Quit your complaining, jeez. These development has provided housing for working class residents for years. Yes, unfortunately due to the lopsided demand/supply situation, these rents have increased substantially. You call it a NYCHA development, I call it a community with low crime, low turnover (which must indicate pretty good management), and a sense of identity. You don't like how it "looks", then don't go there; the residents don't need, care for, your negativity

In previous decades,Lefrak was a dumping ground for Section 8 certificate holders--predominately minority. The place was a crime-ridden shit-hole with many criminals and drug dealers "living" with tenants. There has recently (before the re-modeling into the "New Lefrak")been quite a number of evictions and move-outs, as Management stamped down on illegal turnovers of the apartments after original tenant moved out--including those still receiving Section 8 subsidy under someone else's name. Many others left after the rents were jacked up. But the neighborhood is still crime and drug-ridden, and you get to see the domino-players blocking your way on 99th St as they drink booze from illegal sellers, play illegal numbers and cause a third-world nuisance. Ghetto--I would not venture out there at night and walk while White. Some of the Russkies in the Section 8 units do not win prizes either--ha! Some of the Section 8 ones turned over their apartment illegally after they built their McMansion in Forest Hills (how did they qualify for Section 8 in the first place--oh, forgot, they were religious refugees--sacred cows.

On what and whose land will they build these single family homes? There are people who think land is plentiful and only owned by the government--man, I want to smoke what they're smoking.

I don't know much about the buildings themselves, but 57th Avenue is ghetto nasty. All the car exhaust from the LIE on the other side don't add to the shine.
