City cracking down on license plate covers

From the Daily News:

Mayor de Blasio and the city’s top cop vowed Tuesday to crack down on drivers, including police officers, who cover their license plates to block enforcement cameras.

The Daily News reported that misplaced or covered license plates have let motorists violate traffic laws and dodge tickets in at least 144,852 cases over the past two years.

“If people do that, we are going to catch them and we are going to penalize them,” Mayor de Blasio told reporters during a press conference at police headquarters. “This is another area where we are going to deepen enforcement and there will be more consequences. So if someone has one of those covers I'd advise them to get them off real quick because the NYPD is coming.”

Mayor Big Slow cracks me up, warning traffic scofflaws when he is the biggest scofflaw this city as seen since Tweed. His antics and flouting of the laws, his criminal conspiracy shadow government and his defiant whoring for contributor lucre is creating a quasi-anarchic atmosphere with leads people to do things like this, in the one of the most non-affordable and inequitable places to live in this era.

This is not to defend these drivers, whom by purchasing these covers are up to no good and must be stopped. But now this fine avoiding scheme is out there, expect more people to partake in it. Apparently you can get these at Wal-mart.

Traffic Cameras are UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

We are supposed to have a right to face our accusers and considered innocent until proven otherwise.

This has nothing to do with safety, only another means of revenue generation.

Just another hidden TAX!!!

It's not just "Plastic Covers" it's also people who use Bicycle racks especially the ones that allow you to carry more than one bicycle on the rear end. Bicyclists have been getting away with this for years.

Ah is all about money again, not safety. That's why Vision Zero is a failure.

Lots of cops and politicians have these.

They should just walk around and ticket parked cars with these on. They can also take pictures so they don't get overturned.

If its the law, its the law.

What they really need to crack down on is the amount of people with out-of-state license plates who have never been to those states using those plates to avoid paying higher insurance premiums. Somebody has to pay for that insurance premium and it ends up flowing over to the regular people who are doing their insurance the right way. There's a gentleman on my block who has dozens of cars that have temporary paper license plates off from other states and he's constantly switching plates from car to car , Regular plates that are also from another state and no one does anything about it. I don't know where they get all these license plates from but it's definitely illegal and I feel they should be focusing on that instead of license plate covers .

Funny, they usually try to convince us that the covers don't work. They evidently do. I'm torn between the need to abide by the law and the overbearing Big Brotherness of these camera-police. Especially because they aren't about safety, they're about collecting fines. Most people don't know that these systems are run nationwide by a handful of private companies that install and maintain the cameras... and they review the photos, have access to DMV records, and send out the fines. It costs the government NOTHING, and the camera company keeps a piece of the action. They put up speed cameras in Nassau County, and the voters rebelled, so they took them down!

How dare the little people try to avoid government spying? Big Brother will show them who's boss!!

Strange, every cop I know has one of these or a piece of tape to change the number or letter on his plate. Really doubt if another cop will issue a summons.

i had a clear plastic cover on my front plate to help it stay upright because it was floppy. it did not obstruct any cameras and it was clear, so it wasn't obstructing viewing the actual plate. i got a ticket and had to remove it. such bullshit.

The camera tickets are UNCONSTITUTIONAL and ILLEGAL!

We, in what is left of this Constitutional Republic, have the right to face our accuser and a presumption of innocence, UNTIL proven otherwise.

These devices are nothing but a giant money grab, a fleecing of the motorists, and another hidden tax upon the less fortunate.

More money for the irresponsible, shortsighted, foolish, and reckless politicians to throw down the rabbit hole...

The traffic agents should be looking for license plate covers and illegally tinted windows as they walk/drive around looking for expired registration or inspection stickers or expired meters. Shouldn't be that hard.

Personally, I wish that those gas stations and auto shops that do NYS inspections would automatically fail those cars whose headlights are WAY too bright, and which also are not pointed down at the street. Oncoming traffic is getting so ridiculously bright that I think doctors could perform surgery by headlight.

NYPD is coming for your license plate cover that you're using to escape the plethora of nonsensical Vision Zero cameras that watch our every move, but feel free to piss in the streets and get a tip of the hat, since it's no longer a crime.

"Traffic Cameras are UNCONSTITUTIONAL!"
The traffic cameras are doing what they are designed to do.
Ticket drivers who are breaking the traffic laws while generating a revenue for the government.
Getting a ticket here and there is the cost of driving in a large metropolitan city like N.Y.
Would you rather have no traffic laws and total mayhem on our public streets ?

Yes traffic agents should be giving obstructed plate tickets. Then you have the the plates where the letters/ numbers are painted/altered. Then there are those stealth aerosol sprays too. While they're at it ,write those dolts that install Those blue, purple, green superbright HID bulbs in their cars..........

Brilliant. I'm going to start driving around with my three bike rack on my car at all times now just so I can beat a camera. That makes total sense.

If its the law, its the law.

All NYPD have been told to remove plate covers from their personal vehicles, and that they will be ticketed if parked in designated NYPD parking areas with plate covers on their vehicles.

THIS THIS THIS

The one traffic issue I really wish the government would crack down on. There are people who drive around with their brights on all the time.

>The camera tickets are UNCONSTITUTIONAL and ILLEGAL!
>We, in what is left of this Constitutional Republic, have the right to face our accuser and a presumption of innocence, UNTIL proven otherwise.

This too.

>Would you rather have no traffic laws and total mayhem on our public streets ?

Being against mass surveillance and automatic presumption of guilt (not to mention reasonable speed limits) is hardly the same thing as wanting no laws at all.

"Wait a minute, so the unsuspecting public cannot protect themselves form the ticket extortion racket."

Actually there is a very simple way for individuals to protect themselves from the "extortion racket". Don't run red lights and don't drive 10 mph over the speed limit near schools. It's not that hard really. There's also the added bonus of not putting others around you at risk from unsafe driving practices.

Rochester Mayor: Get Rid Of Red Light Cameras

Rochester’s red light camera program may no longer have the green light, at least as far as Mayor Lovely Warren is concerned.

Warren is asking the city to put an end to the oft-criticized program which has been in effect since 2010. Currently there are cameras at 32 city intersections.

At $50 per ticket, Warren estimated they bring in $800,000 to $1 million in revenue each year, but that still wasn’t enough to convince her the program is worth keeping.

Ultimately it’s about the citizens and their needs and how we could go about addressing their need appropriately,” Warren said.

The cameras automatically take a photo of the license plate of drivers who run a red light. The mayor said:

MOST OF THE VIOLATIONS ARE TAKING PLACE IN THE CITY’S POOREST NEIGHBORHOODS, AND TICKETS ARE OFTEN BEING REFERRED TO COLLECTION AGENCIES BECAUSE PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD TO PAY THEM.

“I cannot in good conscience wage a fight against poverty, while also imposing burdensome fines that have a disproportionate impact on people living in poverty,” Warren said. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

As for people who continue to illegally run through intersections, Warren said she’ll he counting on continued police enforcement – not cameras – to catch scofflaws.

Yeah right.Dream on punky! They sent me a ticket 2 years ago for running a red light, video link included, guess what? The right hand turn light had a green arrow! So there you go.
Of course I never paid the ticket and let them know that according to the video I was turning on GREEN! Guess what, they agreed.
Fucking corrupt politicians, also the red light camera program is being run by a private company for NYC with revenue sharing.
COMPLETELY ILLEGAL!
Just like the TVB where the judges work for the city.

Listen fucko, maybe you are deaf and blind, but all what is being done to motorist is highly illegal! A private company is fining you, with the city sharing the revenue.
There is ZERO FUCKING ACCOUNTABILITY for the driver. Just pay the EXTORTION MONEY.
You fucking mentally disturbed liberals are in fucking denial over the most blatant ripoff schemes. One pays $80 and can run red lights all he/she wants.

Here you go, read this with your liberal friends and come back and tell us whether we are living in the USA or some fucking ass backward Banana Republic, where commie pinkos make up the rules as they go along:

Hey Anonymous I'm fucko and I love the new safer traffic patterns. I stopped driving into Manhattan 20 years ago because of the heavy traffic and the lack of adequate parking. I now walk or ride my bike to the Auburndale LIRR station and get to the city in twenty minutes.
What don't you get ? People want safe streets, sidewalks and roads for drivers, cyclist and pedestrians. It's very simple if you would listen. Don't speed or run red lights and you won't get a ticket mailed to you. Made it simple for you tough guy so please get over it !

You are still stupid fucko. GIVING A TICKET FOR RUNNING A RED LIGHT IS A REVENUE GENERATING SCAM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SAFETY.

Don't speed or run red lights and you won't get a ticket mailed to you

ASSHOLE people with money will speed and run red lights because they can afford it.
DOES NOTHING TO STOP RECKLESS DRIVERS.

Amazing how people cannot comprehend corruption:

Name calling and vulgar language dose not make your opinion stronger.
If you were not behind the computer and were face to face with me and you used language like you do here on Queens Crap I would just walk away from you and your dirty mouth.
Make you opinion count with logic and common sense.

"ASSHOLE people with money will speed and run red lights because they can afford it.
DOES NOTHING TO STOP RECKLESS DRIVERS."

Now that is a very good point about people with money being able to afford the fine. I believe the fine after three camera tickets in one year should also include one point added to the car owners driver's license or registration. A persistent offender should have a larger penalty imposed. Three-Strikes and the law can take into account prior driving offenses.
Driving in the Unites States is a privilege not a right !

This isn't a surprise - Transportation Alternatives, one of the mayor's biggest backers and the originator of the terrible "Vision Zero" openly admit that their goal with it is not to cut fatalities or make life easier for pedestrians and cyclists - but rather to make driving such a miserable experience that people will no longer do it.

They assume, through magical thinking, that once people are fed up with driving, they'll push en masse for more public transportation, instead of pushing for saner driving rules.

The smart thing to do would be to expand public transportation first, (lord knows Central and Eastern Queens needs more bus routes and more frequent busses) and then people would naturally drive less if they don't need to, but that idea doesn't seem to have ever crossed their minds.

Anonymous said...

> I believe the fine after three camera tickets in one year should also include one point added to the car owners driver's license or registration.

The cameras are terrible enough, now you want to add points to the license of someone who might not even be driving it at the time?

@Make you opinion count with logic and common sense.

Does not work with paid shills who are defending a boss who's actions are criminal and is under investigation.

@Now that is a very good point about people with money being able to afford the fine. I believe the fine after three camera tickets in one year should also include one point added to the car owners driver's license or registration.

You are not really bright are you? How do you prove who was driving?
Can't you people tell the difference between revenue generating and genuine law enforcement?

@Driving in the Unites States is a privilege not a right !
According to the powers to be. So be it. But will not change the fact that a private corporation is issuing the tickets with revenue sharing arrangement with the local government. This is ILLEGAL.

Add the corruption starting with Bloomberg who threw a shitfit, because his congestion pricing was declined and took revenge on all motorists in all boroughs! Now add DeBozo to the mix and we have total corruption as stated in the newspaper article.

Not sure what is wrong with you people, but you need to start thinking and stop believing the nonsense that is being spewed everyday from all news outlets.

You want to stop red light running? Get the cops and pull the drivers over.
Now that's a fine with points directed at the driver who actually committed the infraction.
Same for STOP sign running.
Tell you even where to start - FLUSHING!
Notorious for these type of activities.
Speeding? Set common sense speed limits, 30 Mph was just that.
Enforce the traffic laws on bikers. Make sure the bikes are safe and belong on public roads. Lights, horns, the whole shebang.
Teach the pedestrians (especially certain ethnic groups) that crossing a 6 lane boulevard randomly is not safe, especially at night.

Now you can walk away, but will not change the facts.
Corruption thrives, because there are naive believers who have the comprehension of a fruit fly.

At least you refrained from using foul language to make your points.
I still believe in the benefits of using Red Light and Speeding cameras on NYC roads.
The cameras have no health benefits, no pensions no salary like law enforcement.
They are a very cost effective way to generate revenue and change the drivers behavior !
This fruit fly has some facts for you to read if you can fit them in your pea sized brain.
Here are some facts for you to read from the NHTSA.
"In 2012, 93 people died each day in a traffic crash.
An estimated 10,134 people were killed in speed-related crashes in 2012, up from 9,944 in 2011, according to the latest NHTSA estimates.
Speed-related traffic crashes killed an estimated 28 people each day in 2012.
An estimated 845 people died each month in 2012 in speed-related traffic crashes.
On average, 27 people died in speed-related crashes each day in 2011. That’s 829 people each month and 9,944 people for the year, according to the NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis.
NHTSA estimates that the economic cost of speed-related collisions is $40.4 billion each year– $76,865 per minute or $1,281 per second."

We got you. Revenue all the way, not enforcement. Money in, with minimum down payment. In this country you are allowed to face your accuser.Shame on you that you don't posses even the basic knowledge how this country works.
ILLEGAL because a private corporation cannot issue tickets. The cameras have been struck down in many many localities, just because of this minor detail.

***Here are some facts for you to read from the NHTSA***

Zero credibility. Until the swamp is drained, these are political hacks like you with agendas. Sadam's nukes, Global Climate Change, Common Core just to name a few great agendas.
