Construction workers seek drug testing

From NY1:

Dozens of construction workers want the city council to enforce drug and alcohol testing for employees.

The Associated Builders and Contractors Empire State Chapter rallied Monday at the steps of City Hall, calling on the city to enforce the testing.

"Construction is hazardous enough already, without having to worry about if the person next to you is under the influence of something," said an advocate at the rally. "So I think testing that's done by a third party would be beneficial to help give workers the confidence to know that their job site is as safely run as possible."

A performance report that the group released says drug and alcohol use account for nearly one-third of construction accidents nationwide.

This article is a joke and so is the associated builders and contractors!! They exploit there workers low wages and no benefits. The man who spoke on behalf ofthese workers is part of a company called the rinaldi group who had there contractor license pulled by the dob for numerous violations and a death on one of their sites! https://www.google.com/amp/s/therealdeal.com/2015/11/13/city-suspends-rinaldi-groups-building-license/amp/

The ABC exploits its workforce! Their motto is profits over safety!

Drug and alcohol testing for all city council members, and while we're at Federal oversight of the DOB.

Never going to happen.

Unions will never agree to drug testing. They are about the money and won't do anything that would put one of their union members out of work.

They really don't care for the average worker, they care about their wallets!

Drug testing in a dangerous job where one third of accidents are drug related would be a slam dunk, or so you would think.

Again, never going to happen.

I imagine that if you were to be wandering about on iron beams some fifty stories above the walkways and streets, a drink or two the settle the nerves and butterflies might be in order.

Whenever I work on my roof, I need at least three jiggers of a fine peaty single malt scotch whiskey lust to confront the ladder...

Good grief, you are asking for too much. For EBT abusers, I would be satisfied as long at the supermarket they don't buy steak and shrimp with the card and then pay cash for lottery tickets and cigarettes.

And what good does this do when Jose drinks a case 1/2 case of beer every evening after work always hung-over eventually kills somebody ?

The 32 construction deaths that happened in the past 2 years have all been on NON-UNION job sites... There already drug testing on some sites... This association needs to start paying their workforce and give them benifits!!!

Who cares about privacy or physical autonomy, some guy might have smoked pot last week!

I constantly witness a dozen or so construction workers from the 5Pointz re-development smoking weed and drinking alcohol on a daily basis every morning on Pearson Street.

Something has to be done.
