Could a Grenfell situation happen here?

From CBS 2:

The entire 24-hour Grenfell Tower was engulfed in flames in less than an hour, and the fire was the deadliest in Britain in more than a century.

With so many skyscrapers in New York City, could a similar thing happen? And what should people do in the event of such an emergency?

CBS2’s Elise Finch found out.

The cause of the Grenfell Tower fire is still being investigated. But early reports suggest an external building material called cladding may be to blame.

In a recent renovation, insulation sandwiched between two aluminum panels was used on the building’s façade, and it is that material that is believed to have accelerated the blaze.

Similar cladding is used on many New York buildings – including high-rises. So could a similar fire happen in New York?

The Tower People are doomed. All these experts, from the DOB (who looks like he shit his pants leaving the room) to the fire safety are full of shit and spewing denials. The people that perished were told by management to stay put also. Now 75 are dead. The idiot prime minister administered brutal cuts to the fire dept. and laid off thousands of firemen, for the warped rationale that fires weren't happening often enough (in addition to cuts to law enforcement, which has resulted in 3 terrorist attacks in the past 2 weeks)

When I first saw that building engulfed in flames on the web, I immediately thought that it was one of these fast tracked luxury towers built recently in the gentrified parts of Brooklyn and of course LIC, but Grenfell was a public housing building built 40 years ago for the poor that they gussied up with that "cladding" so it would mesh well with the luxury development and fancy public spaces being built nearby.

That cladding's purpose was to be water resistant (what the building's masonry wasn't enough?), but in a twisted irony, obviously wasn't fire resistant

And the people of this building was well organized and their complaints were totally ignored by officials for years.

This will ruffle some feathers and offend some (well most), but this is gentrification's 911

ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY !!!

Just walk by any neighborhood in central Queens and you will see normal looking 2-3 family houses with like 50 Direct TV dishes sticking our from the sides. The basements are illegally rented and renovated. You have people coming in and out at all hours of the night. Most of them are illegal immigrants but because we have immigrant leadership; Moya, Peralta, Ferreras-Copeland they simply look the other way. Nothing against the immigrant community but these greedy landlords who don't care about the safety of their fellow neighbors must be stopped and if you are here illegally then you must face the consequences.

Yes, but the cladding was made of a "sustainable" material!!

May those poor people rest in peace, and may none of us ever have to depend on the Govt for our safety.

It's not a question of 'IF,' Queens 'SHEEPLE,' but 'WHEN!' Then, the empowered, taxpayer-funded-for-life, cradle-to-grave idiot, Shithead Chuck Schumer' can unveil YET another faux plan of protection (Schumer's plan + anarchy = PLANARCHY), so that he can herd the 'SHEEPLE CITI-OTS' (city + idiots), into a continually false sense of city and state government working for the people, when in fact they are hardly working (if at all)!

And, then the vicious cycle repeats until a new breed of troglodytes jockeys for the remnants of a defined city or state pension system for which every single one of the deprived 'SHEEPLE' will continue to pay for the next generation of dereliction of public duty (and, pensions that were ironically designated for We, The People), and they will pay IN PERPETUITY——and, the public be eternally duped, bilked, scammed and damned!
