Don't be a victim

From DNA Info:

Thieves are targeting mothers shopping at the Rego Center Mall and stealing things they leave on top of their strollers as they walk around stores, police said.

At least two such cases have been recently reported, including one at Marshalls, according to Judith Harrison, the commanding officer of the 112th Precinct, which covers Forest Hills and Rego Park.

“This is particularly important because the holiday season is coming,” Harrison said at a community council meeting earlier this week.

Harrison said the suspects wait for the victims to leave strollers.

“They are walking away from their purses and they are walking away from the child that is sitting in that stroller,” she said.

Another sad, sad commentary on the times we live in....

I see the logic to this: taking a package from atop a stroller usually means that there is probably a receipt in the bag(s) so that if stopped by store security, the thieves can prove (to a point) that they have proof of purchase.

Society as a whole has gotten to the point where we can do almost NOTHING without looking over our shoulders to see what evil lurks behind us.

VERY SAD!

Newly arrived immigrants are being victimized by this crime. They have a lot to learn.

We need to be told it's stupid to leave your purse unattended? You deserve to have your sh!t stolen if you're that dumb.

Don't be stupid and you won't be a victim...try using a crossover handbag and not leaving things to chance!

It amazes me seeing young mothers do that. I guess they were born late enough that they don't remember the crime levels the city was at until the mid-90s. I'm glad the city is safe enough that having your purse stolen when you leave it unattended is considered newsworthy instead of normal.

This is getting out of hand. I used to live in Rego Park a few blocks
north of this shopping center, and used to shop there all the time, never
had a stroller, hehe, but never had my wallet lifted, either. I did see
some truly hideous clothes on sale at the Sears there that should've been
arrested, however, and charged with indecent bad taste!! But that's another story
entirely.

I miss the old Circuit City and Wiz that used to be here and
across the street. Marshalls was ok, if a bit grungy. With even Destination
Maternity in Carle Place LI and other places constantly being hit by
armed thieves lately, it's no wonder places like this are also becoming
major magnets for crime. I once carried a whole DVD player etc. home
from Circuit City on foot, being all of 10 minutes walk from there,
and I never once worried about crime, this area isn't
that bad, but the shopping centers and malls now attract a lot of small-time
opportunists, I guess. Better the young moms go to Queens Center Mall
and get groped by young teenagers, instead...???? I don't get it. What
is society coming to?

Gypsy's, beggars, desperado's & crooks are everyplace, Its never been this bad.
Even on Bell Blvd now !
--Vibrant and diverse my ass and YES anybody who carry's a handbag is stupid. If your gonna shop in Queens get vest or coat with deep velcro pockets. People should know this especially now !!

This is nothing new. I have seen this many times in the supermarket. Women put their purses in the shopping cart and then turn around to get a gallon of milk or other groceries leaving the purse unattended.

Get used to it. They recently took approx 3 cops from every precinct to start that other anti terror sqd. No one left to do police work....

It's a shame these braindead women are allowed to reproduce.

What makes me really LOL about this, is what the Alexander (downstairs and across the street from this atrocious little mall full of thievery) is asking for a month to live in this fine neighborhood ($3100 for a 2 bedroom!).

No offense to Rego Park, because I live there now, but it's not a safe/suburban Queens neighborhood. Unfortunately, it's what we should expect from that area... Have you seen who walks around over there? I mean, LeFrak City is right down the block. I grew up in Queens in the 80's/90's, I remember quite well exactly what that area was. I'm sorry, but it hasn't changed THAT much.
