Judge becomes new Queens GOP chair

From the Queens Chronicle:

Queens Republicans have a new chairman.

After the death of Phil Ragusa last month, the county party’s executive vice chairman, Robert Beltrani of Jackson Heights, was automatically elevated to chairman.

Beltrani, a judge with the New York State Division of Parole, will serve as chairman for the remainder of Ragusa’s term, which will expire in September 2015. Ragusa was re-elected chairman last September, according to Queens GOP spokesman Robert Hornak.

A loyalist of the late chairman, Beltrani ran for state Senate in the special election to replace Hiram Monserrate after the senator was expelled from the Legislature following his conviction for assaulting his former girlfriend. Beltrani entered the race after an unsuccessful attempt by Queens Republicans to lure former Democratic Councilwoman Helen Sears, who had just been ousted a few months earlier, onto their ballot line. Beltrani lost the race to then-Assemblyman Jose Peralta. He has also ran several times for state Supreme Court, most recently in 2012.

Ha. After he was convicted of beating his girlfriend and expelled from the Senate Monserrate got more than three times as many votes as this guy. With that sort of track record I'm sure Beltrani knows how to help the county party win elections.

Aren't judges supposed to be non-politicals? Can he continue to serve as a judge and lead a political party?

Judges run on political lines just as the other electeds do.

Bob is an Adminstrative Law judge, i.e. a regular state employee, civil service, not elected. He's probably union and not management confidential, so he can pretty much do what he wants in his free time, as long as the work doesn't involve the agency he works for.

It might be hard to find someone Republican who's (1) actually won an election in Queens and (2) wants this job.

bob turner and phil ragusa are still in court to determine who the chairman is after last years re-organization meeting....the BOE currently does not recognize either as chairman...it is not possible to automatically be elevated to chairman when the seat is currently vacant...there has been no paperwork filed at the BOE certifying beltrani as chairman....just another scam by vince tabone and his cronies.....

Anon No. 8: Somehow, I don't believe that Phil Ragusa is still in court.

You know Mike you come off as very fatphobic. You really can't tell how much someone eats by how big they are. Plenty of fat people probably eat a lot less than you do. I should know, I'm one of them at 300 pounds and only eating 800 calories a day.

Thin privilege is bigots not thinking you steal tax dollars to buy McDonalds.

When you see him in person, he is slightly overweight. I would not think to say, "Man, he's obese!"

Don't kid yourself anon. Beltrani is obese. Just because so many people miraculously find a way to be even fatter doesn't mean he isn't a lazy glutinous selfish bastard. So your typical Queens politician.
