Bloomberg's vote margin in Queens narrowed considerably

From the Times Ledger:

Bloomberg landed 154,127 votes in Queens, according to unofficial results from the city Board of Elections, compared to Thompson’s 120,754. That difference of about 34,000 votes is far less than the 90,000 votes Bloomberg carried Queens by in the 2005 general election.

“A lot of Queens voters were disaffected and turned off,” Queens Civic Congress President Corey Bearak said of this year’s mayoral campaign. “There was not enough attention given to issues like development, taxes and education.”

Had term limits not have been trashed by the City Council, there would have been serious competition for the Mayor's seat. Not unreasonably, real viable candidates think 2x about running against mega-moneybags because the fund raising need to be to reach at minimum the same levels that Bloomberg spends. If the candidate chances doing this, he has 1 shot to get it done - if the money is not raised - they will lose and fade from the political scene. It's a painful process, one which produces shallow uncaring folks winning office. While holding office, raising money for the next election begin immediately after winning an election.

"Make a note of that for 2013," says Bloomie to his campaign manager.

Consider it already done. If it takes $200 million the next time, so be it. The sky's the limit to
deep-pocketed Bloomberg.

What I don’t understand is everyone opposed to Bloomberg who voted for Thompson thinks if he had won that things would be so different. Bloomberg is a liberal democrat and so is Thompson. Liberal cronies of Thompson would have replaced the key administration and commissioner posts and the philosophy would have been exactly the same. No difference. So stop fooling yourselves. As long as NY Voters vote for liberal democrats this will all stay the same?

BLOOMBERG IS A LIBERAL DEMOCRAT? Sarah, joke or what the heck are you smoking?

That’s Right! On every Single issue Bloomberg agrees with the far left of the party. Just in the past few days he met with a terrorist sympathizer and supports the trials of terrorist in civilian courts. He raises taxes, increased spending, pro gay marriage, pro abortion, pro cap and trade, pro health care overhaul, pro illegal immergration, anti gun, do I need to go on.

I still think, "The new broom sweeps clean." Perhaps ideologically he could be very similar to Bloomberg, but he has different supporters and a different power base.

The election of a new guy might have overturned some of the corruption.

Sarah's point is well taken, but the people who get to run are a reflection of who people will vote for.

If the liberals are wealthier, more organized or more numerous, they will be the king-makers, not the conservatives or the moderates.

But that’s the whole point its not a new broom. It’s the same old broom just different bristle!
