New York is getting played for chumps trying to get medical equipment and supplies

Propublica

With the coronavirus outbreak creating an unprecedented demand for medical supplies and equipment, New York state has paid 20 cents for gloves that normally cost less than a nickel and as much as $7.50 each for masks, about 15 times the usual price. It’s paid up to $2,795 for infusion pumps, more than twice the regular rate. And $248,841 for a portable X-ray machine that typically sells for $30,000 to $80,000.

This payment data, provided by state officials, shows just how much the shortage of key medical equipment is driving up prices. Forced to venture outside their usual vendors and contracts, states and cities are paying exorbitant sums on a spot market ruled by supply and demand. Although New York’s attorney general has denounced excessive prices, and ordered merchants to stop overcharging people for hand sanitizers and disinfectant sprays, state laws against price gouging generally don’t apply to government purchases.

With little guidance from the Trump administration, competition among states, cities, hospitals and federal agencies is contributing to the staggering bill for fighting the pandemic, which New York has estimated will cost it $15 billion in spending and lost revenue. The bidding wars are also raising concerns that facilities with shallow pockets, like rural health clinics, won’t be able to obtain vital supplies.

As the epicenter of the pandemic, with about 40% of the nation’s coronavirus cases, New York state is especially desperate for medical equipment, no matter what the tab. “We know that New York and other states are in the market at the same time, along with the rest of the world, bidding on these same items, which is clearly driving the fluctuation in costs,” budget office spokesman Freeman Klopott said in an email.

The Office of General Services, New York’s main procurement agency, declined to say which sellers were inflating prices for essential medical gear. “At this moment in time the New York State team is focused on procuring goods and services based on current market conditions,” OGS spokeswoman Heather Groll wrote in an email. “There will be time to look back and pull together info on all this, that time will be when the pandemic is over.”

Here’s what the trump said in public remarks, interviews and tweets from Jan. 22 to March 10 -– one day before the World Health Organization declared the global outbreak a pandemic.

Jan. 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” — Trump in a CNBC interview.

Jan. 30: “We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment — five — and those people are all recuperating successfully. But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us … that I can assure you.” — Trump in a speech in Michigan.

Feb. 10: “Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do — you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape though. We have 12 cases — 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now.” — Trump at the White House. (See our item “Will the New Coronavirus ‘Go Away’ in April?“)

Feb. 14: “There’s a theory that, in April, when it gets warm — historically, that has been able to kill the virus. So we don’t know yet; we’re not sure yet. But that’s around the corner.” — Trump in speaking to National Border Patrol Council members.

Anonymous said...

Feb. 23: “We have it very much under control in this country.” — Trump in speaking to reporters.

Feb. 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” — Trump in a tweet.

Feb. 26: “So we’re at the low level. As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we’ve had very good luck.” — Trump at a White House briefing.

Feb. 26: “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” — Trump at a press conference.

Feb. 26: “I think every aspect of our society should be prepared. I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up.” — Trump at a press conference, when asked if “U.S. schools should be preparing for a coronavirus spreading.”

Feb. 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.” — Trump at a White House meeting with African American leaders.

Feb. 29: “And I’ve gotten to know these professionals. They’re incredible. And everything is under control. I mean, they’re very, very cool. They’ve done it, and they’ve done it well. Everything is really under control.” — Trump in a speech at the CPAC conference outside Washington, D.C.

March 4: “[W]e have a very small number of people in this country [infected]. We have a big country. The biggest impact we had was when we took the 40-plus people [from a cruise ship]. … We brought them back. We immediately quarantined them. But you add that to the numbers. But if you don’t add that to the numbers, we’re talking about very small numbers in the United States.” — Trump at a White House meeting with airline CEOs.

March 4: “Well, I think the 3.4% is really a false number.” — Trump in an interview on Fox News, referring to the percentage of diagnosed COVID-19 patients worldwide who had died, as reported by the World Health Organization. (See our item “Trump and the Coronavirus Death Rate.”)

March 7: “No, I’m not concerned at all. No, we’ve done a great job with it.” — Trump, when asked by reporters if he was concerned about the arrival of the coronavirus in the Washington, D.C., area.

March 9: “So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!” — Trump in a tweet.

March 10: “And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.” — Trump after meeting with Republican senators.

A day later, on March 11, the WHO declared the global outbreak a pandemic.

.....meanwhile back in reality:

President Trump's organization is in a blind trust and being run by his son, so why is "Rob in Manhattan" suggesting the President himself is somehow working on land deals at this time?

If you want to apply those standards then let's apply them to the hapless (and helpless) Joe Biden, you remember, he's that guy the Dems ware running for President against Trump.

So let's ask what exactly his son was doing in China while Vice President Biden was busy negotiating trade deals. Oh yeah, his son was violating ethics standards by garnering deals worth over a billion dollars on behalf of his corrupt company. This was before his no-show job in Ukraine.

Wonder what "Rob in Manhattan" has to say about the corrupt Biden family (and Obama as well).
Read all about here:

I think the larger national crisis is Trump Derangement Syndrome.
If the Covid-19 virus doesn't kill off all humanity as the Dems/Liberals argue, then for sure, Trump Derangement Syndrome will affect the democrat's ability to think for themselves.

Sorry but these numbers are REALLY inflated to begin with on this "virus". According to the CDC and the WHO websites, in 2017, flu related illnesses killed 650000 people worldwide. Then in 2018, 80000 Americans died from the flu. So far in america after 2 months and 12 days (the first case of this virus was on jan 20), we have had only 7400 deaths so far. The flu season only lasts 5 to 6 months. So in order for this thing to be more deadly than the flu then it would need to start killing 17000-20000 people per month here for the next 3 months. That doesnt even look like its remotely going to happen. And mind you, there IS a vaccine for the flu. So this is just overhyped garbage to distract the public from other political agendas.

Flu deaths this year?.....24,000 and rising

Listen to me now and hear me later moron; the information I've given everyone on this site is all coming from actual scientific articles on the subjects of virology, disease propagation patterns and case mortality rates.

What part of the science don't you understand? Maybe I can explain the numbers again to you:
Seasonal Flu, usually a mix of H1N1 and Victoria B viruses has killed 24,000 Americans thus far this year. The CDC estimates the total deaths in the US to be about 24,000-63,000 this season alone.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

Yes I am comparing the Seasonal Flu (a viral infection that kills people) to the Coronavirus (another viral infection that kills people) because the reaction to one is non-existent while the reaction to the coronavirus is mass hysteria from people like you crapping their pampers.

Now keep reading so you can learn something:
The original estimates for Case Mortality Rate and transmission rate (R naught) were way off for the Chinese Virus. The scientific study (Imperial College of London), on which the hysteria was based, was found to be flawed by the original scientist doing the research (after consulting with other researchers at Oxford University). Read about it here:
https://www.dailywire.com/news/epidemiologist-behind-highly-cited-coronavirus-model-admits-he-was-wrong-drastically-revises-model

Note that the scientist states that the infection had already moved through the population at a very rapid rate with a large percentage of people totally asymptomatic (that means it's not as deadly as first thought).
The scientists therefore downgraded the urgency of the viral threat, something the US has yet to do because screaming libtards like you keep acting like the sky is falling!
Read about the UK government downgrading the threat here:
https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/international-news/politics/uk-government-downgrade-coronavirus-as-no-longer-highly-dangerous/

Note the key words in the title: "No Longer Highly Dangerous"

So you see, it helps to know science, read from scientific sources and not rely on Rachel Maddow or some idiot reporter at the NY Times for all your news.

....meanwhile back in reality the total number of fatalities from this Chinese Coronavirus is 8,449. It is a killer, but so are all strains of Flu viruses.

The Spanish Flu (H1N1) killed 500,000-675,000 Americans in 1918.
Remember the 2012-13 Flu Season during the Obama years?... well, it killed 43 Thousand Americans that year, including a large percentage of Children!
Nobody said shit about it, including Obama.

Stop comparing the seasonal flu with the Corona Virus because COVID-19 is new, people have not built up immunity and there is no vaccine and the cases and death have just recently started, so of course the numbers are not going to be the same as the season flu, which has been around a long time.

From John Hopkins Medicine:

Deaths

COVID-19: Approximately 65,711 deaths reported worldwide; 8,503 deaths in the U.S., as of Apr. 5, 2020.*

Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.

The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly. Since this disease is caused by a new virus, people do not have immunity to it, and a vaccine may be many months away. Doctors and scientists are working on estimating the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be higher than that of most strains of the flu.

EVEN far right conservative Fox host Tucker Carlson realizes this is serious:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/everywhere-already-fox-news-hosts-214715914.html

Anonymous said...

...ok, you don't like the Daily Wire as a source,
how about this scientific article stating the same thing I just posted:

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2238578-uk-has-enough-intensive-care-units-for-coronavirus-expert-predicts/

*note that Dr. Neil Ferguson, the leading epidemiologist on the modeling, states that the original prediction for 500,000 dead in the UK is revised DOWN to 20,000.
Similarly, the original prediction for 2.2 Million dead in the US is revised DOWN.

I notice also that you completely ignore the references to the CDC on viral fatality rates in favor of spewing nonsense about the President doing nothing.
Clearly, closing the nation off to travel from China was the first step in limiting exposure to this disease. He did that during the middle of the impeachment hoax and while being called a racist and xenophobe by democrats like you and candidate Biden!

What's more, it was the open borders/sanctuary city/globalist policies favored by people like you that sought rampant illegal immigration and crowding in our cities, along with the removal of our vital domestic supply chain off shore to CHINA...where the virus originated....remember it's Chi-na that's the origin of this disease.

Lastly, for your further edification, the Coronavirus and Seasonal Flu viruses are quite similar and here's how :

-both are zoonotic organisms, meaning they originate in other animals and "jump" to human hosts at some point.
-they are both responsible for colds and flus. In fact other coronavirus strains are quite common causes of colds and have been studied for years. That's why the Lysol can states that it kills coronavirus.
-both types of viruses can infect the lung tissue and lead to pneumonia
-both types of viruses can eventually be killed by innate human immune responses, leading to immunity
-both types of viruses can spread through the population at a rapid rate (note again that this season's Flu (H1N1 and Victoria B type) have killed 24,000 Americans already with estimates going up to 60,000 Americans.

...shall I go on about how similar the coronavirus is to other viruses that attack humans and have always attacked humans since the beginning of history?

Get a grip Democrats.
Start realizing that this crisis will come to an end, and we will not destroy our economy and way of life because you want to believe that this virus is the end of life as we know it.

Trump lacks certain qualities. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honor and no grace.

Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege. it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

Huh?
Trump is not funny and is lacking in wit?
I beg to differ, my comically challenged corona-commie.
I will argue that President Trump has been the funniest President's ever,
and that includes Abraham Lincoln who was a laugh riot.

You tell me what comedian would have the composure and timing to deliver the following off the cuff:

Moderator: “You’ve called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘slobs,’ and ‘disgusting animals’… ”

Trump:"....Only Rosie O’Donnell”

That was from the 2016 Presidential debate and one of the funniest things I've ever seen on live TV.
The audience erupted in laughter and you could hear the whole neighborhood laughing as well.

You see, it's just that liberals don't like to laugh with the joke's on them. They love to dish it out, but when their the object of ridicule and derision, they crumble.
Trump has their number and they know it. He knows their weaknesses and their vanities, so they hate him for it.
He knows they think they're smarter than everyone so he labels himself a "stable genius" as opposed to their unstable stupidity when it comes to dealing with ideas they don't agree with.

Here's a funny one; President Trump's approval ratings keep rising as well:

After reading the comments on this. a few facts need to be said, especially for those who are saying COVID-19 is like the flu or the numbers of folks who died from the flu are greater than COVID-19 deaths or we need to start up the economy or this is all just mass hysteria:

1. Take a look, a deep look at Italy (especially Lombardy, which is know as the Red Zone and is in complete lockdown) and the number of cases, death and their hospital system, which is one of the best in the world is completely overwhelmed and breaking down.

2. You cannot compare deaths of the seasonal flu (which we humans have built up immunity to and there is a vaccine) with a novel virus, where humans have not built up an immunity nor is there a vaccine yet). Plus the fact you cannot compare deaths of the season flu with deaths of a new virus that has just begun.

3. Which all brings me to this point. Hospitals do not become overwhelmed with season flu patient because of the point above. But with COVID-19, this highly contagious virus with no human immunity or vaccine, many of becoming infected and very sick ALL AT THE SAME TIME, which is overwhelming hospitals to the brink of collapsing and it still is continuing (and forget if you have some emergency not related to COVID-19). Doctors, nurses and other medical personnel are being overwhelmed. And what happens when those front line people become infected and sick. This is the major reason for a stay at home or shutdown. So comparison of the seasonal flu and COVID-19 (which is still being learned about) are like comparing oranges with apples (yes a fruit, but completely different).

No need to pick a side, get so political, etc. We are in a global pandemic that the majority of us have never experienced. So if there were no stay at home, shutdowns, lock-downs then there would be more spreading and more deaths. By the time this year ends, the death rate in this country alone will be high.

Don't understand why people on here have to be so nasty and tear into others when we are experiencing a crisis, the likes which most of us have not seen.

Here's an update for all of you who use idiots on CNN or morons with journalism degrees working at the NY Times, as your main source of scientific information and data instead of actually following the numbers, the science and common sense.

The University of Washington (IHME Institute) which is the main center for disease modeling used by the US government during this crisis, has just DOWNGRADED the number of fatalities estimated for the Coronavirus-Covid-19 epidemic in the US.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/articles/2020-04-06/coronavirus-model-now-estimates-fewer-us-deaths

Now, I've been patiently explaining the science with references and all kinds of information. But, there are still idiots here that want to challenge what I've been stating because they have a political agenda.
I've explained Farr's Law and the natural course of viral disease propagation as a bell curve.

I've explained how the basic dynamics of this coronavirus epidemic are similar to Seasonal Flu in that they are both viruses and they both kill. But even this intuitive and self-evident observation continues to be challenged at every turn because the Left is so invested in this crisis being the "end of the world as we know it", when in fact it is a killer virus like so many other.

And I do understand that this one can overburden the existing healthcare system, but as the Governor himself has said; this pandemic has stressed our healthcare system, it has not broken it.

We wouldn't have had such a problem in the first place if Democrats hadn't moved all our supply chain off shore, pressed for massive influxes of illegals along with open borders and closed down huge numbers of hospitals in our communities.
No, what this virus exposed, was the failure of liberal policies to protect American citizens!

This is why these Democrats are so vested in blaming Trump for huge numbers of deaths.
Because if the deaths are lower than your basic Flu, then the problem actually lies in the policies and hysteria of the Left.

My own theory is this:
The pandemic was used by the Democrats/Leftists subconsciously as justification for their perception that the world was falling apart because of President Trump. Having failed to succeed with 4 straight years of "Russian collusion hoaxes", followed by Ukranian/Impeachment hoaxes with no effect, they finally seized on this Pandemic as the ultimate verification that Trump is at fault for everything.

Despite the fact that the Chinese government was playing around with this in their lab in Wuhan and somehow lost control of it; allowing it to be served up in some street-side bat-head soup pop-up restaurant,Democrats in the US argued that it was caused by Trump.
Despite the fact that the Chinese communists misled the World Health Organization, failed to disclose the danger of the virus and prevented US scientists from entering China to learn more about it, the Democrats in the US argued that it was caused by Trump.

...in the end, the American people know the truth, and will be more enraged as they understand more about the extent of hysteria that was stoked by both the liberal media and their uncritical audience of Democrats.

As for the lady that keeps harping on the name I use for my sign off...get over it...it's the internet; you can use any name you want.
I happen to identify as Harry Haller from Hesse's great novel and I will report you for continued microaggressions against my character choice if you persist.

Snoochie Boochies,
Harry Haller
