Hunters Point residents hopes the NYPD stops the noise this year

LIC Post

This year it will be different.

That was the message from officials at a virtual public meeting Wednesday who plan to make sure that there isn’t a repeat of the unruly activity that took place along the Long Island City waterfront last summer.

The meeting, which was organized by the non-profit Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, brought together elected officials, city and state park representatives as well as local law enforcement.

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and State Senator Michael Gianaris spoke at the meeting, along with representatives for U.S. Congress Member Carolyn Maloney and Assembly Member Cathy Nolan.

Around 150 residents were on a Zoom call that lasted nearly two hours.

“What happened last year… was wholly unacceptable,” Gianaris said, referring to the late-night booze parties, illegal fireworks and dangerous drag racing that took place in the area.

“This is a neighborhood with a lot of families, a lot of young children and the kind of activity that was going on… cannot be allowed to happen again,” Gianaris said.

A record number of parkgoers visited the waterfront parks last year, according to the HPPC, with many discarding litter—leading to piles of trash. Food vendors also stayed open late to serve large crowds.

Police Officer Andrew Diaz, who represented the NYPD 108th Precinct at the meeting, said that the entire force was overstretched last summer – given the outbreak of COVID-19 and civil unrest across the city. He assured residents that there would be more boots on the ground to tackle any problems like those that surfaced last year.

“Last year was a perfect storm with the pandemic and protests – we didn’t have enough police officers to address these issues and we apologize,” Diaz said. “But this year will be different.”

He said that Capt. Lavonda Wise, the NYPD 108th Precinct’s new commanding officer, has made Center Boulevard a policing priority.

Diaz said that the precinct is also changing the work hours of its officers—to ensure that more cops will be available on weekends.

He said there will be a greater “uniform presence” with a lot of NYPD auxiliary officers also on patrol this summer.

Did Gianaris, Jimmy V and any of these tower people ever consider that these violators could be their tower neighbors?

Sounds like a bag full of excuses borrowed from the 114 precinct. Woodside received the same lack of community support and the homeowners found the rave parties on Borough Place after 5 weeks of nightly jams. 114 closed every report as unfounded or addressed while the music and fireworks prevailed for hours.
This is not a call to defund the department, this is a demand to service the community you are employed.

Let me see if I got this right? These cop hating politicians Gianaris, Van Bramer, Maloney and Nolan want the police to take action to clear up this noise problem for the liberal elites living in these high rises on the water.

I want to see what happens when something goes bad during this enforcement action, they will be screaming police brutality, racism and BLM. My suggestion is that these matters be handled by some civilians like the violence interrupters that the liberal mayor and city council created. They are doing a great job keeping the shooting and homicides down. Better yet the politicians themselves can go out and solve the problems themselves since they seem to have the answer for everything.

The 108 Pct. cops would be out of their minds to take any type of enforcement in this anti police climate and risk their job and their livelihood. The liberals that are complaining will be the first to throw you under the bus when you take any action that doesn't align with their philosophy of the way the police should do their jobs. They all seem to be experts in the law and policing.

Elections and the people you elect have consequences.

Where is Bishop Taylor? Why is he MIA here when he is everywhere?

In one community he tried to get a property developed which would involve forcing a church to move. Everyone who actually lived next to the location opposed it. What Bishop would force out a church for a developer to make money? they asked.

So he held the meeting in the Woodside Houses. They thought it a great idea because he promised a 'community center for the Woodside Houses' - in a different neighborhood and three blocks away from the location of that church the Bishop wanted to displace but, since it was only a block away from where one of their residents gunned down a mom recently we guess he was correct in breezily assuming it is part of their community.

Because of his little uninvited involvement within the community, to garner community support, the project was voted by CB 1- requiring BTW, a steep change in the zoning to accommodate it.

Now he is involved, along with Gianaris, where Amazon was going to develop some property. Ok no problem. So again we ask, where is the good Bishop with this issue?

I'm laughing so hard...... don't hold your breath, they will make even more noise this year.

What if the noise makers are POC?

I hope the partygoers have a blast in 2021. The Covid hoax should be over by now and all public school teachers should be forced back into the classroom or fired.

Laughing my ass off at also.
I already received my fireworks ordering sheets, 3 pages this year !
And the 4 inch festival ball mortars, 1200 shot cakes & fountains and 24 ounce rockets are back !!
Those tower yahoos will need more then earplugs
"They will make even more noise this year" could be an understatement. I think it will be more like the VE Day celebrations in 1945.

One second we want to defund the cops and vilify them, but then we expect them to go and enforce quality of life concerns in the next second?

When the cops try to arrest a person of color for a quality of life issue there, and he resists, and force is used, these same people will want the cop locked up and fired.

I'm sure most of the residents complaining are the ones who support the anti cop politicians and support the defund the police movement, and now because something affects them they want the cops. The cops need to not respond to any of these quality of life issues and let these people sit in their own shit until they elect politicians a bit more supportive of the police, and who don't treat criminals like gods.

Joe, you are going to report that 3-page sheet's origin to law enforcement, aren't you? Maybe also reveal its source for media investigation. How about starting here with Queens Crap? Your civic duty.

Look at photos of NYC in the 1970s. People left in droves for the suburbs. It took 50 years to make NYC a great place to live again and the Anarchists wrecked everything in 2020. Welcome back to urban blight and people fleeing to the suburbs. Nice job Biden voters, you broke urban living.

There are no riots. There is no violence. We have peace. Trust us.

Defund the police and Gotta fund those mansions for their leaders !

They have the Former Free U.S. Press on their side therefore they are righteous.

Don't forget that the private security force that the white liberal tower elites hired to push out the mostly POC party folks last summer is owned by "Bishop" Taylor

Only in Woke NYC do you get a comment like that.

Second, Mystery Mike and Jimmy No Brainer have no neighbors, only IOUs.

Re: Woke NYC

I happened to be at Hunters recently (hence the photo). While strolling through there, I saw a bunch of slick rides lined up on the curbs by the bike path. I wouldn't doubt visitors come by, I bet that was a common meeting place for fast and furious types back in the day, but those towers do have a lot of ample parking garages.

Private security force "rent a cops' cant do shit beyond the tower property.
This is the new Willets Point for the car people with the speakers, amplifiers and beer coolers in the trunks. And the cops I know are so dam mad at the mayor and NYPD boss they will let it go.

Noise is terrible in NYC !
Mostly from low flying Jets and from racing cars with music blaring with illegal exhaust !
Crime, Taxes, and pollution a hell of a town.

Noise is terrible in NYC !

Its always been that way, the jets, music, elevated trains, traffic.
As a child on DeKalb & Central I had the M train 100 feet away, music in the yards, airplanes going to LaGuardia so low you could read the names like "Yellowbird"
The fireworks. Even my Grandfather wiring up small speakers and earphones on tomato plants, fig trees to play them Italian music (to grow huge fruits according to him) Lets not forget the old German guy chaising the Puerto Rickan guys chickens with a knife for going in his yard.
Its part of NYC life, these new transplants need to get a grip or move back home to Boonsville and quit attempting to change NYC culture.
Noise and nuttiness doesn't bother me as most born here, you never get bored and it keeps your mind healthy.
The problem I have with this city is crime, liberals with the Marxist politics, homeless & illegals landing for handouts, and WORST all this bullshit every time a black felon get shot or hurt wile resisting arrest.
What part does a criminal or person under detainment not understand about Drivers license or identification please, step out the car or hands behind your back ?
