Representative Ocasio-Cortez calls for statewide rent strike

https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dcclothesline.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2018%2F09%2Focasio_20cortez_20suit.jpg&f=1&nofb=1

The Real Deal

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — progressives’ rock star from New York — threw her support behind rent strikers Monday.

In a virtual town hall hosted by New York tenant coalition Housing Justice for All, Ocasio-Cortez called for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to cancel rent and mortgage payments at the state level and expressed support for those who do not pay rent because of the coronavirus.

“When it comes to these rent strikes, to echo what each and every one of you have said, people aren’t striking because they don’t feel like paying rent, they’re striking because they can’t,” said Ocasio Cortez. “It doesn’t matter how many threatening messages a landlord sends … you can’t coerce people to do something they cannot do.”

Her message differed in one way from that of rent-strike organizers, who want even tenants who can afford the rent to withhold it — to pressure legislators to act.

Ocasio-Cortez was joined at Monday’s event by tenant organizers and advocates who called for radical measures to provide relief for renters, small landlords and the homeless. Speakers included a tenant leading rent strikes in Elmhurst, Queens, a neighborhood in Ocasio-Cortez’ Queens-Bronx district that was hit hard by Covid-19; a public housing resident striking on the Lower East Side; and an advocate who called for empty hotel rooms to be used for the homeless.

In New York, Ocasio-Cortez said that she has repeatedly asked Cuomo to cancel rent and mortgage payments in private conversations. Now she has publicly demanded he do so, noting that she has already “picked up the phone.”

“As we know here in New York, we have to fight with Democrats to make sure things get accomplished,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “Here in the state of New York, we have a Democratic governor, a Democratic state legislature and a Democratic City Council, and we are still struggling to cancel rent.”

She should have prefaced her target generalizations with the word neoliberal.

In one instance landlords need to pay the mortgage and their own bills

In another instance how the fuck is the government gonna tell people they can't go to work but they still have to pay bills and rent ?

No prob AOC, you first.

...here's an idea;
how about putting a freeze on this dolt's $174,000 per year salary.
Maybe then she would understand the idea of cause and effect for once.

If you want no rents, you'll have to pass legislation to have all mortgage banks defer payments, all municipalities defer tax payments, all utilities defer all bills, and have all insurance companies stop billing for payment.

Its a Trojan
First you enact a stay on rents to bring the landlords to their knees.
Then offer the landlords the choice of going bankrupt and loosing the home or signing a section 8 contract that stays attached to the home for lifetimes
Either way the socialists running both the city and state city get what they want.

This is the same shit the pulled in Denmark to crack private homeowners, I think Its called Scandinavian Socialism or Democratic Socialism.
Somebody here on Queens Crap said the city will find a way and was told "naa never happen" or something like that.

It's been covered ad infinitum that the majority of New Yorkers can't save a dime and were living check to check because of the cost of living in the city they work in. It's also been reported that a majority of working Americans (even middle class) wouldn't survive a medical emergency cost of $1,000 and that includes rookie cops and EMT's (the latter even living in homeless shelters which was highlighted in this blog during the legendary Maspeth protests 4 years ago).

There will be more comments on here vilifying socialism and the congresswoman (that picture is 2 years old) but none will be able to come up with a cogent argument against the comment made by Anonymous on the top of this page.

We are living in a paradox.

My working class parents grew up during the Depression and WW II. They were strict on how we spent money - built a second home in the woods from tearing down buildings and salvaging their windows. Never saw a live baseball game or went to the movies as a kid, but they had money to send me to a top grad school. Money was there when needed, but nothing else. Period.

Today? Working class parents rent a park for their kids (and have that 3rd of 4th they cannot afford but hell you know), go on vacation to destinations around the country, and when their job suddenly vanishes max their credit cards for food for a few months, default their mortgages, and look like a deer in headlights. More than we might want to admit, if measured to to standards of a previous generation my sympathy for them is a bit thin. (and, ah, good luck 'Oakies' on that move down South - are you in for a surprise)

Absolutely not. We are living in a time of great opportunity. Now is the chance to rid ourselves of the Neo-Democratic Party that has chosen the path to build itself at the expense of the rest of us and the destruction of the machinery of the Federal Government whose mandate is 'the benefit of all'.

Now is the chance to have serious discussions on homeless, gender, immigration, the fact that classic 'American Values' trump political agenda churned out from cliques.

Now is the time of Great Opportunity. Hail to the New. The Old Gods are dead.

This latest development in the #cancelrent insanity has taken such an insane turn that I feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz when she steps out of her house for the first time and says, "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."

Something is clearly very, very rotten in Denmark. We have a so-called ultra Rightwing president redistributing the wealth of the middle class among themselves and the lowest classes in the name of an "economic stimulus." We have a dyed in the wool Leftist politician wanting to redistribute the property of the middle class to the indigent in the name of "affordable housing." Both seem to be on polar opposites of the spectrum but in reality are really both sides of the same coin. Both have settled on the exact same strategy of forcing the middle class to do the heavy lifting while allowing the elites to skate free and enjoy ever-increasing tax breaks and bailouts.

Welcome to neoliberalism, folks.

Yes, yes, and YES!

The thing that angers and frustrates me the most about all this talk about how bad people have it is that people are being intellectually dishonest about why some people are "struggling."

Are some people poorly paid and struggling? Yes. Of course.

But the fact that there are, for example, single parents living hand to mouth in the ghetto doesn't also mean that every person pleading poverty is a salt of the earth type straight out of Charles Dickens. More often than not, the opposite is true.

I speak from experience. My parents have been renting property for hundreds of dollars below market value to help people out. Both they and I have tried helping people financially who claimed to be in dire straits.

2019 became the year when I found out that so many people we helped were exactly the type that Anonymous at "Wednesday, April 29, 2020" is talking about.

Example #1: I had one relative come to me in 2019 groveling for money, saying that she had no money for groceries. Being that she was on Section 8, a single parent and only making $26K a year, I gave her the money. There was no reason to believe that she wasn't on her last dime.

A month later, she casually dropped that she just bought a $1K phone for herself a $2K iMac for her son. Upon further investigation, it turned out that even though she was indeed a single parent, her kid spent the bulk of his time living with her parents and was fully supported by them and his aunt, from the food that he ate to the growing number of $200 sneakers collecting dust in his closet. In addition, she had gone on a Caribbean cruise at least once a year. Her last cruise was in the February prior to begging me for money.

Now, had she lied to me about not having enough money for groceries? No. She was telling the truth. But in her delusion, she didn't imagine that the reason why she had no grocery money is that she was spending money she didn't have on junk. In her mind, she was "struggling single parent on Section 8."

Second example: My parents had tenants who had spent years being late on rent pulling the "we have a daughter" card and then later decided to stop paying rent in 2018. Again, as with the relative claiming to not have enough money for groceries, things were not what they seemed. The tenants were a gainfully employed couple probably making about $50K a year with full benefits for them and their child. Their rent was less than $1100 a month. So, compared to other couples in their position, they had an extra $500-$600 in their pockets each and every month.

Instead of pocketing these savings, they spent an extra $1-$2K a month above their income level to take their kid on expensive weekend getaways out of state, put her through an expensive private school, give her expensive lessons and splurge on lavish parties and gifts. It was a $4000 catered event for their daughter that outed them for what they were and prompted me to file for eviction. They had used that event as an excuse for why they were late with rent.

Personal experience with people like this is why I've grown less sympathetic to the constant drumbeat of how "bad" people have it. There's a saying that goes, "The truth between two extremes lies somewhere in the middle," and that's certainly true when people keep talking about how bad everyone has it. There was a time when I would've been sympathetic but I've seen too many examples of people not being able to afford anything because of overspending.

Its impossible to get a carry permit (unless your a politician, jeweler, pawn shop owner) but the premises permit is quite easy if you have a clean record.
Expect to pay over $400 for the background check and more if you hire an expediter to cut through all the anti-constitutional, anti-American New York bullshit.
The Governor and WORSE the mayor doesn't want all the "misguided urban youth" and criminals he let out of jail getting shot after the break into your home and have you cornered with no place to retreat as New York's bullshit castile doctrine laws require.

I don't doubt your experiences at all. I've seen plenty of these deadbeats you talk about. I know an upper middle class family who spent way beyond their means, going on vacations like 3 times a year (twice in one season) going to the Hamptons and wasting electricity and heat. The economic crisis came and then boom, going to relatives asking for a bailout themselves. Frivolous spending has no caste system. It's too bad that there are foolish people out there that yearn to live a high life while on WIC.

And you're right about Trump/Pence and AOC. While her criticism is spot on(which is why I highlighted), it's still too little too late because she voted for CARES and wasn't that engaged with the city's lame response as the outbreak was spreading and schools and businesses stayed open.

None. That’s the problem. They have no motivation to go to community college or even get any sort of skills for employment. It’s pathetic watching a coulple and they couldn’t even get jobs at fast food joints. They really don’t want to work. They’re young in their twenties and will spend their lives on welfare. Truly sad.

I don’t get the lack of outrage that a Trump along with the Republican Congress gave some coins to most Americans while the rich were given exactly what they hoped they would receive which was tax breaks.

But AOC dressed up for a photo on some magazine receives the typical sexist bimbo remarks. If it was a guy in a fashionable suit for GQ magazine as an up and coming politician, no one cares.

I don’t agree with her radical liberal viewpoints. She has no experience nor does she appear to be a policy wonk willing to work with other a Congressional members to work out policies that can be introduced into bills. Besides a rookie, she’s just playing the game no different than Trump. Eventually, she needs to have a record rather than “protest” votes.

She was right about Amazon as NY Post had an article of released emails where Amazon arrogantly expected NY politicians to build them a helipad and other concessions that were not made public.

@minababe

Thank you for posting detailed examples of the privileged life that Americans have.
The problem when we talk about the "poor" in America is that the word "poor" is never placed in its proper perspective.

For example, our friend Alexandria Ocasio likes to push the story that she somehow came from an "underprivileged" background because of some vague references to living in the Bronx with a single parent or something. Real New Yorkers understand that there are parts of the Bronx (Riverdale, Pelham Bay or City Island for instance) that have always been great places to live. Furthermore, the public has learned that Ms. Cortez actually grew up in Westchester County and went to private school there (yes there is a vibrant Hispanic middle class in America).

The problem is compounded by Leftists/Democrats like Ms. Cortez, who continue to traffic in tropes about the poor and destitute being ravaged by nasty capitalists (read hard working middle class people who plan for their future)looking to exploit their labor and time. Don't be fooled by the homeless encampments in San Francisco or the Subways in NYC. These individuals are suffering from mental disease and drug abuse issues, often both. The homeless crisis in America is not fueled by lack of resources, but by an abundance of drug use and a lack of oversight for the mentally disturbed (ironically, the long term result of liberal ideology with regard to those with obvious mental issues having the "right" to do as they want instead of being forced into treatment).

The following should be required reading for all students in High School as part of their Social Studies (or Social Justice) programming:

I agree with the intentions of the cancel rent movement. Having been evicted due to landlord attorney shenanigans and getting behind in my rent after being unemployed.
I know what it's like to not be able to sleep knowing that I won't have the monthly rent come the 1st of the month.

Unfortunately, those who will benefit from it are the dirt bags who live in public housing, NYCHA projects . okay not everyone is a bum in NYCHA or on Section 8 but come on. they are paying rent based on their on the books income a lot of times it's what welfare pays for monthly rent which is very little money.

the people on Section 8 are paying only 30% of their monthly rent either Section 8 or Jiggets pays it. Jiggets is a monthly subsidy if you have children. You rent gets paid if you have children and are of the correct race to get Jiggets. I know a junkie who gets Section 8 because he has a son. He's on SSD, his wife is on SSD and they sell pills to make money for their other drugs. Nice, right? This is the bastard who won't have to pay his rent come May.

On top of that, parents will work a few weeks so they can put in for EITC when they do their taxes and are getting checks for $10,000, $35,000 and they don't pay any taxes at all while they are working because of their dependents.

We all know there is an underground economy in the NYCHA projects. Lots of money is in the streets from drug dealing, prostitution, gun running, loan sharking, hair braiding, pit bull breeding, looking out for the drug dealers, holding for the drug dealers. You name it, it's all off the books under the table steady income. There are millions of dollars in drug money in our streets and guess what? Convicted felons are supposed to give up their NYCHA apartments when they're in prison. They don't. They go back to the houses, the pj's and commandeer them as their drug dealing palaces. Ever wonder why there's so many shootings and killings in the projects? no you know why.
And these are the people who will get a rent moratorium. This is insanity.

-Trump achieved record low unemployment in the Black and Hispanic community.
-Trump achieved the highest level of employment in American history.
-Trump destroyed the ISIS caliphate in Syria/Iraq (the one left over by Obama)
-Trump achieved tax cuts which fueled the rise of the American GDP rate for 3 straight years (when Obama said we should get used to 1% GDP or less)
-Trump re-negotiated the abhorrent NAFTA (globalist) deal that sent our manufacturing base to Mexico and let Canada get away with huge trade imbalances.
-Trump re-negotiated the China trade deals to actually hold them accountable for their currency manipulation tricks and outright theft of American resources and intellectual property. Now the democrats want the Chinese to get away with allowing a virus to seed extensively into the Western world...go figure
-Trump had US forces kill the biggest state sponsored terrorist on the planet (Iranian General Soleimani)and put Iran on notice that their provocations won't go unchallenged.
-Trump had US forces kill the biggest non-state sponsored terrorist in the world
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS. (yet the newspapers never mention that achievement)
-Trump turned the United States into the largest energy producer on the planet, through deregulation. we actually became energy independent and a net EXPORTER of energy, giving us a huge geopolitical advantage over Russia and China.

"I agree with the intentions of the cancel rent movement. Having been evicted due to landlord attorney shenanigans and getting behind in my rent after being unemployed."
---

You got evicted after getting behind in your rent after being unemployed?

Who told you that it's your landlord's responsibility to house and shelter--on his dime--because of your personal circumstances?

Private property--which you moved into--is not a homeless shelter or halfway house. It's just like any other business. You wouldn't be able to shoplift hundreds of dollars worth of groceries at the local Trader Joe's or Wholefoods based on the logic of, "I became unemployed, and can't afford groceries." But people like you think it's okay to "shoplift" an apartment according to this same reasoning.

What's curious, too, is that people like you who play the "lost my job, shouldn't have to pay rent" card have plenty of options. You can take in a roommate. You can move back home to your parents' house. You can move in with a friend. You can apply for unemployment insurance and Section 8. But what you do is pretend that you're so completely out of options that you have "no choice" but to squat rent free in an apartment you can no longer afford. Why? Because you think you're too "booji/white/middle class" etc. I know this is what you think because I've encountered this mentality more times than I can count.

If I sound cruel and unsympathetic, the reason why is that people like you are one of the driving forces behind the affordable housing crisis and out of control gentrification. The reason? A large number of affordable housing stock is owned by small landlords. When tenants keep going deadbeat playing the "I can't pay my rent, so you can't evict me" card or successfully lobby for laws giving them squatter's rights, small landlords are pushed into foreclosure or bankruptcy.

This results in a cascading effect that leads to gentrification and loss of affordable housing. How? When small property owners in traditional working class neighborhoods are pushed into foreclosure or bankruptcy because of deadbeats and "squatters rights" tenancy laws, developers lick their chops and "bail" them out via buyouts. They then replace their rentals with luxury developments and fake "affordable housing" housing that's AMI'ed out of reach of locals.

Of the properties that don't get bought out, landlords decide to no longer put units on the market or they jack up rents to make up for losses incurred by deadbeats. Right now, as we speak, my sister and I have made a concerted effort to not rent out one unit in my parents' house that was left vacated after we got rid of the "I have a daughter couple" (see my story above). The other unit is now occupied by a gainfully employed couple that decided to squat since March 2020 in spite of a court order. When they're gone, we won't put this unit on the market, either. Not until this #cancelrent insanity blows over and the courts overturn the spate of bullshit "tenants rights protections" that passed in Fall 2019.

In the event that we do put the apartments back up on the market again, we have no choice but to raise the rent to market rate level when before we were more than happy to rent it out below market rate. The reason why is that, ironically, the cheaper the rent, the more this attracts unreliable "fringe" tenants rights advocates like you who decide to pull this "I lost my job, so shouldn't have to pay rent" card. Plus, we have to make up for the thousands of dollars that the last two tenants cost our parents.

Harry Haller,

I agree with the heart of what you're saying but I think you are getting some details wrong.

A lot of what passes for "Rightwing" or "Leftwing" or "Conservative" or "Leftist" these days is neither truly Rightwing, Leftwing, Conservative or Democrat. It's Neoliberalism or Libertarianism disguising itself as these political ideologies by adopting Lefting and Rightwing populism.

Case in point: you talk about leftists being behind the idea of allowing the mentally ill to do what they want out of "freedom." But this notion is not Leftwing. It's a solidly Libertarian concept. The entire basis of Libertarian ideology is the extremist notion that "freedom" means allowing people whatever they want to do, even at the expense of themselves or of society. The argument is that it's a "violation" of their rights to force them to do what's best for themselves and everyone else.

The reason why the "free the mentally ill mantra" sounds leftist is that Libertarians are populist sheep in wolf's clothing. They will often pander to whichever side of the political spectrum best helps them. In the case of the mentally ill, Libertarians pandered to the Left by invoking progressive "bleeding heart" ideology, but they were Libertarians through and through.

Libertarianism, incidentally, is what's behind these anti-lock down protests. This entire movement sounds Rightwing and Conservative, but it's not. Just like the "free the mentally ill" movement, it's being pushed by Libertarians, except using Rightwing populism to further its agenda and disguise its true philosophies.

Moving right along, you are right to criticize AOC. But she is definitely not Leftwing, Democrat or Socialist. This latest maneuver of hers--of deciding to engage on what seems like an attack of the small business class--is outing her as a Neoliberal Puppet. Like Libertarians, Neoliberals will often disguise their motives by using leftwing or rightwing populism. In AOC's case, it seems that her support is "socialist". But it's proving itself to be neoliberal.

How do I know it's neoliberal? One of the end goals of Neoliberalism is to destroy the "middle men" of the economy (entrepreneurial class, middle class, working class, etc.). Neoliberals do this because they see the economy as a "zero sum game" system in which to win the most money, you have to force your competition to lose, much like in a poker game.

#Cancelrent sounds like it could be socialist, but it's not. The reason why it's not is that the end result of #cancelrent wouldn't be merely giving the destitute "free rent"; it would be collapsing the rental economy in a way that would result in huge swaths of property owned by the small property class winding up in the hands of the richest developers and speculators. That is neoliberalism in a nutshell--transferring the wealth of the middle men to the elites by any means.

Sorry about your pressing problems. But a lot of people who are unemployed, like yours truly, were living check to check and hand to mouth before our leaders in the white house, city hall and Albany fucked up and didn't take this outbreak seriously when it hit the states in mid January or even when the streets were deserted in Wuhan at the start. And we are all waiting for UI to come but now we got more worries and stress since chickenshit Cuomo is already claiming the state has no money to pay people they are telling to stay home

The bigger problem is that CEO Trump and those establishment hacks in DC didn't want to freeze mortgages, rent and credit in that oligarch welfare CARES act. And that shithead Cuomo refused to do the same and did a lame ass moratorium on mortgage instead of a straight cancellation. And it's funny how they have all these trillions to give away all of a sudden. And another few trillion more because there are more stimulus bills coming.

It's like they want a 21st century dust bowl to happen.

As it stands however, we're in a war with an mass of ideologies that seek to destroy the American middle class and worse; the free will and common sense that has defined American culture for over two centuries.

The first rule of a war (cultural, economic, ideological, military) is to know your enemy and define them. In that regard, I call them as I see them and as they refer to themselves.

Ms. Cortez and Mr. Bernie Sanders and much of the San Francisco City Council define themselves as "socialists" which equals Leftists in my book.
The forces that have allowed mentally ill individuals to flood into our local libraries and into our subways, and which have allowed criminals to be released from jails on the thinnest of pretenses, have been led by socialist/liberal politicians.
In NYC, we have our own well known "socialist" Bill deBlasio who continues to defiantly proclaim his socialist bona fides, having supported the Marxist-Leninist Sandinistas in Nicaragua during the 1980's, and continuing to support this failed ideology.

The bottom line is this; the movement we both appear to be fighting against;
whether it's dead-enders attempting to undermine the idea of private property or pot-head mayors attempting to destroy middle class values by dumping criminals in our neighborhoods,
whether it's neo-liberals, libertarians-disguised-as-neocons, legionnaires-in-leotards, Libyans for lobotomies or confused lyndon-larouche-leftovers;
they're all the same me, and I call them Socialists or Democrats.

Now, let's keep our firepower aimed in the same direction and not get caught in the crossfire.

Well said Harry. But I wouldn't rule out National Socialism. It is not democratic Socialism or Marxism. The little guy almost ruined its chances of revival 80 years ago. And NatSoc need not be violent. It needs to be reinvented and implemented. It's the only way out of this mess. We are living in a situation that is worse than Weimar.

Ummm...I never mentioned his accomplishments, I insinuate that he was controlle by jews (Kushner, Barr, Paul Singer, Sidney Adelman, Bernie Marcus, etc.). Just to name a few. We give 4 billion dollars a year to an ethnostate called Isreal - more money than we give to all of Africa. We do this in spite of the fact that they:
-blew the USS Liberty out of the water, murdering American servicemen, because they wanted us to fight a war for them.
-succeeded in getting us to fight multiple wars for them.
-harbor the fugitive an former Mousad agent Ghislaine Maxwell from scrutiny despite the fact that she has direct knowledge of Epsteins clients
-Set up listening devices outside the white house to spy on Trump.

Still, he surrounds himself with tribe members. They control him, like they control everything else. It was Kushner that made Trump back off on the immigration ban.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so we're really gonna go there with the Jews Controlling Trump routine?
Do we say the same about the Saudi Arabian Muslim Wahhabists?
After all:
-we cover their asses militarily to the tune of Billions annually.
-they have funded the establishment of Wahhabist fundamentalist extremist mosques throughout the West, but we consider them a close ally
-they succeeded in getting us to fight multiple wars for them
-they condoned the actual murder of a member of the free press
-they've undermined oil prices (albeit aimed at against Russian oil)putting our own oil producers at risk
-their citizens funded, planned and carried out the 9/11 attacks on the USA.

so, with all that said, is Trump under control of the Israel/American Jews or the Saudi's? Which is it, because I'm detecting some pretty stark contradictions here.

Look, I understand that there are a lot of people of the Jewish faith in positions of power and influence in our government and our economy. But, it's kind of a giant leap to say that the President is "controlled" by any group. It comes off as paranoid at best or simply anti-Jewish at worst.
Can we just accept that Jews succeed at high levels in American life, just like other groups do without pushing the Protocols of Zion off the dusty shelf?
We've got six Roman Catholics on the Supreme Court; that's 66% of the Supreme Court while Catholics make up about 20% of the US population (full disclosure, I'm raised Catholic), but that's how it goes.
Getting back to Presidential influence,
clearly, we could say that the President is also being controlled by the Saudi's from the equally concerning list of items I posted about that Muslim nation, no?

I wouldn't worry too much about those conspiracy scenarios because I know two things that would stop any wholesale takeover of the hearts and minds of Americans by means of subterfuge or outright undue influence:
1. The American culture doesn't allow for too much undue influence without accounting for it in some way; it's hard to drown out entire populations when they have freedom of speech and assembly. Even the Deep State is learning that lesson as we speak.
2. History tells us that an armed population is hard to control when they don't want to be controlled, look at our own experience in Afghanistan.

dead-enders attempting to undermine the idea of private property- Minababe. The slumlords purchased the buildings at low prices because of rent stablization and rent control. These owners have all benefited from rent control and rent stabilization. They do no repairs, leave the front door locks broken and create unsafe conditions to force out the rent stablized tenants. and harass and menace the rent controlled. Then there's those LLC's who get government money to put up buildings and do things like not provide heat or hot water or let the elevators remain broken. Oh and allow drug dealers to run their buildings but who cares? But you know all this because you are a landlord, correct? My experience is that the illegal alien and immigrant slumlords are the worst. They bring their third world concepts to America. Not good for us.
Who are you to trash another poster because they were evicted and became homeless? If the rents were not so ridiculously high and inflated, working people would not get behind in their rent.
Maybe you would like to tell us how you got your property?

You can't start any court action against your tenants until June 18th. Hope they get you on a lot of violations so you better not harass them like you harassed the other tenants. Times have changed. Maybe you would like Cuba or Venezuela, some place where the patrons get more respect.

AOC has requested a moratorium on paying rents for four months and after the lock down is over. Makes a lot of sense to me. We all know the landlords will get tax breaks and moratoriums on their mortgages.

You're another privileged WHITE GenZ/millennial keyboard revolutionary aka "fauxgressive" pretending to care about "social issues" out of your own sense of guilt of being part of the problem. You white privileged trust fund babies do this every single year when you reach college age. You always put on your Che Guevara t-shirts or V for Vendetta masks for the year playing "revolutionary" pretending to align yourself with minorities and the disadvantaged to piss off Mommy and Daddy and prove to yourselves that you're not as disgusting as they are. Then a year later, you discover Atlas Shrugged and become even more Far Right/libertarian than your douche bag parents ever were.

Case in point: readers, if you want to see who's driving #cancelrent, go check out the latest news story at Curbed NY about the white transplant in a Bushwick building who is organizing a rent strike in her building. Both she and her husband were creatives before being allegedly "laid off." She was a TV producer. So, not only were they getting a lot of money before this rent strike (and probably have more than enough saved up for emergency), they most likely got the $1200 stimulus check and receive $1000/week unemployment.

Let me see if I can put this into perspective: a white transplant moved into a Bushwick building, displacing the low income and middle class residents in order to enjoy THEIR cheap rents. Now after helping to drive out the residents of Bushwick, she's going to now pretend she's in the same camp as the low income and working class minorities she helped displace. And she's going to do this by bankrupting the very landlord who, if it weren't for his cheap rents, wouldn't have given her the opportunity to live in Bushwick in the first place.

This is the type of person, I repeat, who is driving this movement. A white privileged millennial/GenZ playing keyboard revolutionary. A white privileged millennial/GenZ now co-opting causes of the demographics they replaced and doesn't care about the fallout because they have more than enough of a financial cushion to fall back on if it fails.

Wasnt she the one who doesn't want the lockdown to end? But yet she wants landlords to still pay their property taxes and their maintenance men? In order for them to get money, the lockdown has to end and people need to go back to work. I find it funny that the same ones that say "Americans are lazy and the illegals will do the work Americans dont want to do" are the same ones who DON'T want Americans to work now. That just goes to show you how "lazy" Americans are since about half the citizens in the country do actually want to go back to work. AOC is an idiot anyway who also voted against the stimulus package to give Americans money.

The whole problem with the rent in nyc is that it is way overpriced because we get a false sense of what people can actually afford due to people who take in a hundred roommates. If the apartment buildings were just filled with regular families, then the rent wouldn't be so damn high. But since everyone wants to live with roommates or sublet apartments to more than what an apartment should hold, then that's where the rent becomes high and the only people who can afford to rent here are those with multiple roommates. Building laws have gone out the window. So if you have 5 grown men living in a 2 bedroom apartment, nothing is ever done about it. And of course 5 grown men who can all work is definitely going to be able to pay 2500 dollars for rent a month. This is the issue with foreigners and illegals because they are more than willing to live like this because living on top of each other back in their own countries was not a problem for them. They even think an apartment with a roach problem is fine as long as they dont have a rat problem. To them, nyc living is comfortable even when you live with 5 other people. This is why families cant afford to live here anymore. It's easier to afford the rent with multiple roommates than it is for just two parents who have 2 kids where one parent maybe has to stay at home to watch the kids. Families in nyc are a thing of the past unless you get section 8 or lived in a rent frozen apartment or was handed an apartment down to you by a relative. Even the illegals who have families here, they live like a hundred people in one apartment so you can have 3 adults working with 2 families living in a 3 bedroom apartment. If one person stays home and watches maybe 4 kids between the 2 families, then 3 grown adults are able to work off the books while one stays home to watch all the kids. This is the problem with NYC and renters.

Here's where we stand:

-The virus has hit us and is on its way out, as we can see from the hospitalization curve, the case curve and death curve. It followed the predictable Farr's Curve of epidemics. The bell curved disease pattern has been understood for nearly two centuries of medical study.

-The virus is not as "deadly" as first believed. The WHO, based on initial estimates at the Imperial College of London first modeled the virus at an Infected Mortality Rate of 3-5%, thus the "millions will die" scenario that led to widespread panic and hysteria.

-Ongoing antibody testing of the population and randomized samplings of populations in studies done in California, New York and in the UK reveal a viral penetration into the population far exceeding what was initially understood. That means that more people got the virus and more people were asymptomatic with the virus.
That also means that the denominator in the following equation is finally being defined:
Infected Mortality Rate = Number of Deaths/ Total Number of Infected
Estimates at Stanford University and Oxford university now estimate that IMR to be somewhere between 0.12-0.50%....not the initial 3.0-5.0 %! BIG DIFFERENCE.

-Further understanding of the virus reveals that it primarily targets those 65 and over and those with pre-existing conditions like hypertension, severe asthma, COPD, Diabetes and Heart Disease. It does not appear to be particularly virulent in children (unlike the Flu).

-Doctors are beginning to develop protocols for more effective treatment, including the use of Hydroxychloroquine/Azythromycin before the "cytokine storm" stage of the disease, the use of Remdesivir to shorten and blunt the severity of the disease, holding off on ventilators when at all possible, along with other measures.

With all this being said, we are now faced with the worst ECONOMIC disaster this nation has ever faced, if we continue to leave our economy closed. A disaster that will lead to death from suicide, lack of medical care for other conditions and neglect. A disaster which will permanently scar a generation of children confined for months at this point. A disaster which has cost us 3 TRILLION dollars and counting.

So, what am I getting at?
It is time to move on and leave the virus behind. Isolate those at risk. Practice social distancing and move on and leave the virus behind. The continued closure of our economy is now going to make the Covid-19 virus look like a walk in the park.
move on and leave the virus behind.
Humans have evolved to handle viruses, virus are part of our normal body flora just like bacteria. In fact we have more viral and bacterial cells than human cells on us at any given time.

Time to move on and leave the virus behind.

You must have the mental capacity of an 8 year old to think anyone's buying into your fake outrage about me being "anti-white." I've seen better acting from a YouTuber.

BTW, nice "arguing there." I'm going to use that bit of dribble you posted to offer a word of advice. From one activist to another, if you feel wronged by landlords, rent stabilization board, etc., you're not going to change shit by talking and sounding like a special ed student. Okay?

Irrespective of your viewpoints, that's what you sound like--an inarticulate moron. If people like you are who represent the "pro-tenants" side no wonder landlords and the rent stab board have the upper hand. They sound and act intelligently. None of you do.

Inarticulate babies don't get a lot of things done in this world. Your cluelessness about this simple fact of life reminded me of what happened when talk shows allowed potheads a chance to make a case for decriminalization. I'll never forget that one Montel Williams show when he went, "Here's your open platform. Have your say." Instead of talking in a calm and rational manner, the potheads acted like a bunch of hormonal preteens. After a few minutes, the show was literally a full 40 minutes of grown adults whining, sobbing, crying and screaming at the opposition. Later, these same potheads were most likely fuming with rage blaming "the establishment" for not decriminalizing pot.

The point I'm trying to make is that instead of raging at landlords and REBNY for making your life miserable, maybe try asking yourselves and the other fools in this "rent strike movement" how you can better articulate your issues and represent yourselves so you can get the results that you want.

Just a thought.

Just for the record, I want to elaborate on my calling out of #cancelrent as privileged white millennials/GenZs because of the faked outrage of the Anonymous troll calling me antiwhite.

It's all about making the point that one demographic has coopted the politics and activism of the very demographic they victimized. Historically, the "rent strike" movement has its roots in the activism of the poorest victims of housing, particularly minorities and immigrants living in tenement housing and the worst kinds of inhumane conditions. We are talking the absolute destitute, the working class and underclass, the very antithesis of hipster and transplant douchebags spearheading this #cancelrent campaign.

For a privileged white transplant to co-opt this movement is offensive and disgusting. It's akin to Ivy League art school graduates displacing inner city street artists, putting up pretentious art galleries copying their murals and graffiti and passing themselves as "guerrilla artists," when they never had to survive the type of gritty environment that gave birth to guerilla art in the first place or had to do their work under cover of darkness out of fear of being arrested.

If you are a GenZ/millennial privileged transplant, you have NO RIGHT to even so much as breathe "rent strike" in any capacity because it is not your movement. In fact, you are the reason why so many of the people you displaced are considering it in the first place.

I don't give a crap if you think me saying that makes me "anti-white." I'm not here to make friends. I'm also not here to indulge you in your bullshit millennial/GenZ brand of liberalism, which is rooted in both a narcissism and a more covert, underhanded form of racism. Okay? All righty then.

And so the cultural marxists embrace brutalism, ugliness, sameness, and they devour indivodual nuance, personal success and proficiency.

From Nietzsche: Tarantulas...

"The tarantulas, of course, would have it otherwise. "What justice means to us is precisely that the world be filled with the storms of our revenge"—thus they speak to each other. "We shall wreak vengeance and abuse on all whose equals we are not"—thus do the tarantula-hearts vow. "And 'will to equality' shall henceforth be the name for virtue; and against all that has power we want to raise our clamor!"

You preachers of equality, the tyrannomania of impotence clamors thus out of you for equality: your most secret ambitions to be tyrants thus shroud themselves in words of virtue.
