No homeless at Creedmoor

From the Queens Tribune:

State Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) put cold water on rumors that Gov. Andrew Cuomo was eyeing the vacant Creedmoor Psychiatric Center tower in Bellerose to house homeless persons.

Several news outlets reported over the weekend that Cuomo was looking into using the vacant tower on Winchester Boulevard and Union Turnpike as part of a plan to put homeless persons into a shelter. He was allegedly also eyeing several other vacant psychiatric centers across the state.

But Avella released a statement on Tuesday stating that the governor had dropped any consideration of using the center.

“When I originally came across the rumor that the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center was being considered for housing the homeless, I reasoned that there was no way such an awful proposal could be taken seriously, but experience told me that worse ideas have been considered,” he said in a statement. “After several calls, I can confirm that the Governor’s office has no intention in using this facility to house the homeless population.”

Avella added that he feared the city would be receptive to the idea, which according to the Daily News was receptive to the idea, but later confirmed that they, too, would be dropping the idea.

Put it at the old Parkway hospital in Forest Hills. A perfect location.

Can't the city use it's imagination and turn this into a tech center of some sort? Bring jobs and boost the economy?
We are always 5 steps behind other major cities...

No homeless at Cooper Avenue, No permanent shelter at Pan Am ... Word leaks and the press and public get wind of it too early, so deny it with careful language in order to stop the rumors, then push it through while there's enough confusion to avoid any groundswell opposition - it's a familiar tune.

I trust to a point that Avella is earnest, but he had better have this on really good authority.

Another ruse!

A mere distraction.

We know that, as always, deals are being made in the back rooms...

Yeah Not Receptive to the idea Just like DHS had no intentions of putting homeless in the Pan Am Hotel. Now that they've heard about it how much would you like to bet that it's going to happen? Stop making these alternate shelter site proposals, you're giving them ideas...

Anon #3. Truer words were never spoken.

one wonders why these elitists will not place the occupants that were insane & released to the public subway stations to shove citizens to their death, back where they belong ? CIVIL RIGHTS ? For the insane ?

exactly what the DHS did in Far Rockaway. claimed they weren't going to put in a shelter and what did they do? they put in a shelter. First month, a guy pulled a sink out of a wall, started a fire, the place had to be evacuated. Crime is up in the sector... more crack, more shootings, more fare beaters.

As the reverend Al Sharpton would say, Heck No !! This site serves its purpose and should remain unchanged. If all else fails then it should be turned into a comnercial office park...

Vacant? That 1940s monstrosity is empty? Seriously had no idea. In that case, where are the pols to demand that it be imploded/torn down/demolished? Get that nasty thing off the map ASAP.

Look at Katz's comment on this and it doesn't seem like its really off the table.

Too bad. It was a good idea. Ah, but the people of the surrounding area pulled a NIMBY.
Where the fuck do you expect the homeless to go? NYC's answer is leave NYC or die.
Remember when some of those hot shot high earning Wall Streeters got sacked and, themselves, became homeless?
There but for fortune. Have we all become so dehumanized that we cannot afford an ounce of compassion?

LOL!
Do you think those snotty Forest Hillers would allow that in Parkway Hospital?
Not on your life! NIMBY, NIMBY, NIMBY!

How about using Flushing Hospital? It's one of the most poorly rated hospitals around. So put it to better use.

Yeah...and there is the old Parsons Hospital building which has been shuttered for decades.
Use it! Better than having the homeless grab a snooze in the Main Street subway station.

The area that Creedmore is located on is pretty huge. I think a luxury development might be a better idea. Perhaps two 25 story towers with parking and swimming pool might be suit the area best. I've been listening to trump so much lately that i am beginning to think like a developer.LOL

it's really a shame that they cannot use these buildings as they were meant to be used.
bring back the sheltered living set up for the chronic psychiatric patients and RUN IT CORRECTLY.
there is and has been a chronic shortage of inpatient beds and then the chronic shortage of appropriate residential slots.
people wait for more than 10 years to even see a residence for their family member and most times it is horrendous and no way will anyone stick their autistic, developmentally delayed,or a chronic mental illness person in there.

why can't they use these buildings for that purpose ?
