Jerk vandalizes historical sign

JeanMarie Evelly/DNA Info
From DNA Info:

An historical sign in Astoria Park that commemorates the General Slocum Disaster is being replaced after it was heavily vandalized, according to the Parks Department.

The sign, which was located on Shore Boulevard near the Hell Gate Bridge, describes how the General Slocum steamboat caught fire off the park's shoreline in 1904, killing more than a thousand people — what the Parks Department says was the highest death toll of a disaster in the city before 9/11.

The sign was taken down last month after someone vandalized it, tagging it with what appeared to be a marker or paint. It will be replaced with a new sign since workers were unable to remove the markings, according to Parks Department Spokeswoman Meghan Lalor.

There's no set date yet for when the new sign will be installed, she said. It will be similar to the old one in its wording but will have an updated design.

Had the Titanic not collided with the iceberg that fateful night, the General Slocum disaster would still be remembered. It was a devastating event to the New York City Community at that time.

It did bring about maritime regulations and inspections. And the regulations never end...

Like the Queens Plaza Millstones broken and covered with graffiti - and every public official in western Queens was warned that these things happen to stuff in the open (like they didn't know about that) but, again, everything, including common sense and sustaining strong communities, is trumped by real estate development.

History is the most failed NYS Regents exam. How can we expect the kids to have any respect for our history when most of them learn it from revisionist cartoons? I would bet 90% of the children never heard of the General Slocum, the tremendous loss of lives or the Corporate greed that caused so many women and children to perish. This could be a great opportunity to teach the consequences of paid off inspectors still relevant today (see DOB). If we continue to neglect history don't be surprised when someone in the future trashes the 9/11 Memorial.

they did it because it has nothing to do with black culture.

Anon no. 4: how do you know that a black person was the vandal? We're you a witness this happening?

Always amazed how easy is to vandalize and destroy instead of building, creating, preserving.
I guess is a cultural thing.

Disgusting.

I just hope iritano doesn't care about that sign.

Whatever the perp's color, that graffiti is black culture. Nice try, though.

Correction to "90% of the children never heard of the General Slocum"....
99% of adults and children in Queens never heard of the General Slocum. Poor education and lack of interest in our history is nothing new.

From looking at the illegible tags of the vandalous miscreant, it is pretty obvious that it received a wonderful public education, complements of Randi Weingarten's minions. Perhaps a recent graduate of Grover Cleveland High School...

Therefor it can neither read nor write legibly, and the the inscription of the placard is entirely unknown and meaningless.

If not a current client of the Department of Homeless Services, soon to be, and YOU are paying for this!

Maybe GAHS will volunteer to remove the graffiti.
They have to be good at something.

Look who uses that park.
Do you expect civilized behavior?

Blacks are offended when anything is not about their so called culture. they have to destroy the sign because they are angry and well, they get away with it. Since only white people died they consider this white privilege and there's a whole bunch of white people willing to back them up.

Blacks and immigrants

can't handle the idea of American history, it offends them.

That sign was shoddily constructed just begging for graffiti. Frankly, I'm surprised it wasn't "bombed" a long time ago.

Interesting that no one - yet - has graffitied the WW I memorial right across the way. If they did, they'd get their heads handed to them by the vets. The vandals know this down inside.

BTW I think it's time for a r-e-e-a-a-l Slocum Tragedy memorial somewhere perhaps over the wall down by the shoreline WITH statuary.

Given the apparent stupidity of the graffiti artist and lack of caring about whatever he is destroying, I find it hard to believe that he would view the WW1 memorial any differently. It was probably too far to walk over to.
In what way would "the vets" find out who it was and exact their righteous retribution?

Astoria Park is now filled with tons of illegals and other assorted "Hispanics." It was once a nice park before diversity and multiculturalism took over.

A country whose leaders decided to destroy it. Odd.
