No eminent domain plans for affordable housing (right now)

From CBS New York:

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ambitious redevelopment plans won’t involve the use of eminent domain to acquire property, Planning Director Carl Weisbrod said Tuesday.

The mayor’s planning priorities include building more affordable housing and rezoning a five-block stretch of midtown Manhattan adjacent to Grand Central Terminal.

“I don’t see us using eminent domain in a broad way,” Weisbrod told a real estate conference hosted by Crain’s New York Business. “I don’t believe that it’s going to be in our toolbox.”

Eminent domain isn't needed for affordable housing. What's needed is a massive building binge. Make it legal and you'll see building. 2000-2010 the city added ~200k units of housing. DB wants to add 240k in ten years. Hardly revolutionary, and not enough to bring prices down. Go back a couple decades the city was building 400-500k units of housing per decade. That's what's needed.

Eminent domain was employed to drive a middle class African American community from Flushing's muni lot #1. site to build the Bland Housing which was built elsewhere. Now F&T is building over that same parking lot. The city giveth. The city taketh away. Cursed be the name of NYC's crooked club.
