Big long bus route proposed

From the Daily News:

The city’s most ambitious plan to speed bus travel to date — an approximately $200 million, 14-mile super route through the heart of Queens — was unveiled by the de Blasio administration Tuesday.

The design features bus-only lanes, curbside fare payment and wireless technology that activates green lights for approaching buses between Woodside in the north all the way down to the Rockaways on the southern coast.

A six-mile segment in the center of the route along Woodhaven and Cross Bay Blvds. will be the most dramatically altered, with separate lanes for local and through traffic, turning restrictions and wide, landscaped pedestrian islands for riders getting on and off buses, officials said.

Construction is expected to start in 2017 and take about one year, Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said. The entire project is estimated to cost $200 million, officials said.

When finished, the seven Select Bus Routes created by the city since 2008 will pale in comparison, Trottenberg said.

This is outrageous. Hard working tax paying citizens who pay for Woodhaven with out taxes for infrastructure won't be allowed to use this road anymore just because they have to drive to work because taking a bus means four or five transfers most of the time. With BRT the road won't be able to move more than four mph. De Blasio is trying to push white people out of the city...

It won't be completed until 2022. Guaranteed .

The Union Turnpike overpass and unsynchronized traffic lights are the problem. Fix it and the city saves $200million.

Why don't they build a new subway there. You would have a fast route for those who want to use the subway and not deprive drivers of much needed traffic lanes.

The bus only lanes will make an already congested road intolerable. This makes a good argument for reactivating the old LIRR rail line.

Cool, now I can get to the beach faster.

Finally, a pretty good idea from the MTA. Maybe it will even get a few people out of their cars.

How about a new bike lane ?
Just saying...

The beach at Rockawy is now an easy reach!

The beach to Rockaway would be an even easier reach if this involved reactivation of the rail spur that runs parallel to this auto corridor without slowing down vehicular traffic on this already congested corridor.

The traffic on crossbay/ woodhaven is unbearable for, 2 pm-8pm. It will only get worse.
