West Nile breeding ground in Whitestone

The remaining 6 acres of the former CYO site in Whitestone has been the topic of several posts on this blog and local papers.

As of today, it sits vacant, abandoned, and rapidly becoming a breeding ground for the West Nile Virus, as well as a home to numerous raccoons, opossums, and God knows what else.

The attached photos show the extent of the overgrown weeds.

With the warm winter behind us, the mosquitoes are bigger and hungrier than ever. In light of recent events with at least one confirmed tragedy due to the West Nile Virus, this site needs to be cleaned up immediately! Regardless of who owns it, who doesn't, etc.

Our Elected officials need to contact whomever they need to contact and get it cleaned up!

Please, before the Summer is in full swing, let us avert another tragedy.

It's A field of overgrown grass and weeds. I don't see any standing water or rubbish where you'd find mosquito breeding pools.. So what's the problem?

You wouldn't see the standing water because the weeds are so high.

Let's cement it over like everything else in that neighborhood, right, Al?

Who said anything about cement? How about cutting the weeds?

Anon 3. As a matter of fact, absolutely not!
I have proposed the remaining 6 acres be re acquired and turned into little league baseball, soccer, fields with all weather running tracks, and be given BACK to the community and it's youth.

Where are the local politicians on this one?

Useless as usual

Let's get one of the local politicians to obtain access, let's walk around and see what's living in there!

Come on Avella, Halloran, siminowitz.heck what about the largest civic group in the area? What about the crest haven group?

WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Avella should visit 42 avenue @204-205 street ,Bayside.

he will have a great photo-op at the intersection SWAMPS, after a rain." mosquito median mall".

for some reason the cpb11,bayside times -ledger and d.o.t. does not care about West Nile disease killing local residents.

Are those the tops of Powells Cove Estates houses? You would think the developer would clean up the field to sell the houses!

No developer yet. The property is not desirable for a developer as it has no sewer systems nor any other type of infrastructure.

There is a push to bring the property back to the lids in the community. Last we heard, Avella was working on it. Personally I think he's full of crap, but we can hope.

Halloran wants nothing to do with it. He wants to see it developed. Another sell out?

Anyone notice all the grafitti on the fencing?

Mosquitoes live in tall weeds during the day.

The pools of standing water on this site are many. I've seen it from above believe me it's not pretty.

It is a breeding ground for sure.

No update from Avellas office on this property. Hmmm? Wonder why Al. Looks like Tony is taking the community for a ride again.

Suckas
