Skate park for Woodhaven

From DNA Info:

The Parks Department has put out a request for bids to build a massive new skate park in Woodhaven.

The 10,350 square-foot skate park — the sixth city-run facility in Queens — will part of a larger renovation at London Planetree Park, on Atlantic Avenue between 88th and 89th streets.

The skate park, located in what is now a basketball and baseball playground, will feature two stair sections, grind rails, a brick quarter pipe and a series of banks and slopes.

The renovations for Planetree, which will cost $1.72 million, will also include two new basketball courts to the south of the skate park, along with adult fitness equipment, a walking path, shrubs and a sitting area.

The project is expected to be completed in fall 2013.

Just what this neighborhood doesn't need. Gangs, drugs, fights, and vandalism will soon follow the so-called skate park. It's actually in Ozone Park, not Woodhaven.

Just what Woodhaven needs, another weedy concrete heat island frequented by knavish hoods on their rolling insurance traps.

Really? I always thought skate parks brought out those anti thuggery types. Skaters might smoke a little and drink a beer here and there but they don't pull out guns or sell heroin etc... They maybe more known for vandalism (graffitti) than thuggery.

On a scale from 1 - 10 on the level of negativity that could/would result from a skate park, I would say it is a 2.5/10

Wow, sure the hell better than spending the money on something trivial and stupid like Bowne House, Poppenhusen Institute, Steinway Mansion, or St Saviours.

Think of those places taking backseat to a freakin' skateboard park.

These pols are outta control!

Yet there is no money to buy an old lot in Whitestone and convey it into fields??? No millions needed t build???

Something is wrong here.

Better than no skate park and most not all skaters are gang members - get over it!

Most skaters are gang members? Really?

Kids who listen to heavy metal must also be devil-worshipers right?

the cities are going broke from out of control spending, by spineless politicians, for public servant pensions and health care plans. and now they want to waste more taxpayer money on SKATE PARKS ?

have the citizens of nyc gone completely nuts ,to permit this ?

hospitals are closing, and doctors are dropping medicare patients, unemployment/ underemployment is still 8.2 % to 15.5 % , 49 million U.S.citizens receive food stamps and now the feds are attempting to allow the welfare en- rollees to collect checks without looking for jobs, in violation of the law.

There is already a skatepark nearby in Forest Park. Don't they know that? The community has far more important needs than another one with one so nearby. Why don't they ask the community what they would want done with the park?

Do ambulance chasing lawyers wait on the sidelines until a kid cracks his head open?

It's 2012, do enough kids really still skateboard?

This park will bring people from all over the city and bring business with it.

"It's 2012, do enough kids really still skateboard?"

Just because you aren't aware of a rising trend doesn't mean it exists any less.

lol not all skaters are gang members. to be good at skating and bmxing you'd have to put time into the sport. I doubt any of these little gang members on Jamaica ave have the brains to perform tricks, they couldnt even commit to going to school what make you think they'll commit to a dangeroussport. if you want the park safe, install cameras .. simple as that.

i can believe how narrow minded some people in queens are...i have been to his skatepark and i can say that it looks great and its gonna be a great activity for bikers and skateboarders to enjoy themselves with there friends. Not all skateboarders are gang bangers...... actually most are good kids with a passion for something they do, unlike most of you people......
