Macneil Park getting kayak launch

From the Times Ledger:

The kayak launch at MacNeil Park is on the horizon, the Queens Parks commissioner said at last week’s College Point Civic meeting, meaning residents may soon be able to take to the open waters with their self-propelled vessels.

“I think we are relatively close on this,” said Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, referring to the proposed launch at the group’s monthly gathering at The Poppenhusen Institute, at 114-04 14th Road.

The community has sought a sandy launching point at the park for years, and though the project is on its way to becoming a reality, there are a few more hurdles to clear before residents can take to the water.

The department is still seeking a private partner to help run and maintain the launch, Lewandowski said, and until that happens it will remain firmly on the drawing board.

According to civic members, the plans do not yet include a shed or rental program, but the neighborhood would like to see one in the future.

I'm glad this was done for the community, because as every working class citizen in college point already feels, there is a vacuum that can only be filled by a kayak launch, and what we need, NOW, are MORE kayaks, NOT fewer. what fine piece of legislation.

Funny thing is , it won't get done without a private partner! Never gonna happen!

Well I was hoping for a series of high rises, with about 20 percent of the units set aside as affordable housing (HAHAHAHAHA), a bank, a 99 cent store, a hookah joint, a mosque and a mwxican food cart, but a kayak launch will do for now.

Kayaks at Macneil Park??? That's a good one! The park has a nice rocky shoreline for the kayaks to crash into and it's only a short rowing distance from the lovely Tallman Island sewerage treatment plant.

A new option for commuters to reach Manhattan.

I think it's a great idea, and I'm personally looking forward to it.

A rocky shoreline poses absolutely no threat to a kayaker BTW.

To the person who posted under Anonymous 4x - get out and exercise once and awhile - you'll have a different view of the world.

Since there is no express bus to Wall Street from Bayside, maybe we should be allowed to boat there, or at least have a ferry.

these city government kooks have to be dismissed quickly. they are living in a "DREAM " S OF MY FATHER "WORLD".

Um, didn't they just publicize how very toxic that water is? And once they open the new water treatment facility, yum, can't wait!

So you have to haul your kayak from your home? That should be interesting. Those things are not light.

Things are changing. Most dont realize CP used to have beaches and whatnot. And as far as Tallman..The water that comes out of there is cleaner than anything you will run across in the LI sound/east river or Hudson. AT LEAST they are doing something. Just put a stop to over
developement and well be set

I think a kayak launch is a great idea as for a ferry to NYC that would be great but totally unfeaseable
