The saddest part of this story is that a working woman who seems to follow the law paid an astounding $1400.00 for a basement apartment. You think maybe there should be a better deal aboveground for her.
city servants union members can not be favored , no one is above the law..... ---------------------------------- Favoring civil servants? It seems like the city doesn't do anything about ANY crooked landlord, civil servant or not.
I rented an illegal apt from an INS cop. There are lots of civil servants doing illegal crap with apartments in NYC, just as there are tons of full time landlords breaking laws without any enforcement at all by DOB or HPD. NONE, ZIP.
Reality check- this woman was not renting anything - and the "tenant" did not live there! This is a complicated story: the owner's son was dating a girl - they broke up; the girl's mother knew about the previous illegal rental - which has not been rented since the original violation, btw, and decided to not only get even but also make a buck, or two, or three, or thousands.
I agree - no one should be renting illegal units. They represent tremendous safety hazards - people can, and have, died. However, this case has a back story and I HOPE that's not ignored.
checks are not clear - and no bank info for where they were deposited... Sorry, having watched this develop, I still say this is is a scam. It was dismissed at first hearing, because the "tenant" couldn't show she had ever lived there. We don't know why it was upheld the second time around... and, unlike LLT Court or Howard, I have watched this pathetic scene unfold. There are questions that need answers...
BTW, these violations are not issed to Ms. Shavuo, and she is not the owner of the building. Howard knew that - but wanted the glory of waltzing into a Caouncil Member's office.
In the meantime, CM Rose is on the money: the owner can fight the judgement, or comply with it - but it cannot be ignored.

one wonders if the previous "illegal tenant"s" rents were claimed as income on the landlord's nys/nyc/fed. income tax filing ?

She didn't live there but she had copies of the cancelled checks and a judgment from a court?
