Kew Gardens Hills to get new library

From the Daily News:

A plan to renovate the Kew Gardens Hills Library, a project civic leader Patricia Dolan made a priority before her death last month, was recently approved by city officials.

The $7.3 million expansion will add 3,000 square feet to the library and include separate areas for adults, teens and children.

Construction is expected to start late winter or early spring of next year.

As head of the Kew Gardens Hills Civic Association, Dolan had argued for years that the current facility was overcrowded and outdated.

Yet another capital project by the library board of developers.

Just how much capital money has been spent so far this year?

What is the point if they let go staff and don't buy books - how does Queens compare to the other boroughs on hours?

ok ok don't answer - its obvious.

It's about time. Long past due. Other neighborhoods had their local branch renovated long ago. This branch is too small, the counter and other furniture shows obvious wear, and they don't have the automated check-out machines other branches now do. Plus, it's become a hangout for local crazies who sit there and rant to themselves.

The only downside to the renovation is I suppose the library will be closed for a year now.

That library is unbearable due to all the screaming children!

I don't remember making noise in the library when I was young. And if you complain to a librarian they just say that they're not allowed to tell people to shut the F--- up!!!

I don't get it - why do we have to tolerate everyone's out of control brats!

Sorry for the rant. It's a nice library but unusable due to the noise factor!

Isn't this just where homeless people go to use the bathroom?

I went into the library by me a few weeks ago for the first time in years. Only people in there were there to read the newspaper or rent out movies.

Thank god for the internet.

$7.3 million for 3,000 square feet ?

What are they building a park avenue penthouse.

It's a library! A simple box like structure to house books. Nothing fancy. If a non-government funded operation were to build it, I'd think the price tag would be under 1 million.

To the last poster

Look at the board. See any scholars there?

Someone should look into the library capital budget.

The QBPL administration refuses to hire security guards for branches other than Central and Flushing. In all of the other branches, the staff is on their own. Having a library science degree doesn't make one a security guard and also doesn't protect one from abusive patrons. Even though the Queens system is severely understaffed, the CEO is now going to expand hours at the Central Library on Saturdays. Yep, really great for staff morale.

"separate areas for adults, teens and children"

Haa yea !
Translation:
No more books but more baby sitting dens, social and after school programs with computer games & movies.
Adults get a den where immigrants watch porn with one hand. Like in Ridgewood.

In Ridgewood they threw a good 90% of the books, Ridgewood Times archives & JHS93 yearbooks in the garbage.
It was all replaced them with crayons, fingerpaint, computer stations and DVD movies.
--Its a nothing more then a babysitting service with perverts watching Polish porn or doing Craigslist "adult services"

- Dam shame
That was a beautiful library with elegant Bavarian woodwork balcony you will never see again.
Now its interior looks like the "Playschool" cafeteria at the Hall of Science.
This is an improvement ??

why does the librarian job require a "science' degree?

why does the librarian job require a "science' degree?

The minimum credential for a job as a librarian is a Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) from a program accredited by the American Library Association. To be a librarian in a college or university where librarians are full members of the faculty (such as CUNY), one needs both an MLS and another graduate degree in a subject discipline (usually a 2nd Master's degree, but sometimes a doctorate), in order to be on the tenure track - and then one must publish scholarly articles, just like the other professors.

It's a science for the librarian to instruct someone to use the automated checkout machines without getting short-tempered and easily flustered.

Nice use of stereotypes. Let's see if you could get through an MLS degree program. And then after graduating, one has to deal with people like you.
