Goodnight Neir's Tavern

https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/05/98/07/91/neir-s-tavern-and-steakhouse.jpg

Friends,

Yesterday I was forced to make one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make.

Sunday January 12th I will have to step down as owner of Neirs Tavern and I have no one available to replace me.

I’ve been unable to obtain an affordable long term lease to reach our goal of the 200th anniversary in 2029.

I’m operating month to month with an unaffordable rent and insufficient sales to overcome a year of losing money every month.

Due to increase personal obligations I’m unable to put in the time necessary to overcome increase business challenges I’m faced.

Everyday I pray I would find a way to dedicate more time to overcome these challenges until yesterday I had to face the truth.

Neirs Tavern is losing money and I don’t have the time to help to overcome it. I want to be a good father and husband.

I hope my Neirs Team will be here until Sunday in the event a miracle happens.

But I have no more money after Sunday.

I’m sorry i let you down.
I’m sorry I couldn’t get landmark status.
 I’m sorry I couldn’t buy the building.

but I’m grateful for all the memories we’ve created together saving Neirs Tavern the last 11 years I’ve been here.
Thanks to everyone past and present who made Neirs Tavern our 2nd living room for the past 190 years.

With gratitude,

Loycent, Neirs Tavern and the entire team

Even the late great Anthony Bourdain couldn't save it.
The city landmarks a Pepsi ad and they wouldn't give Neir's one.

Greed is killing this city.

Update:

As everyone has seen, a miracle has happened and Neir's Tavern lives another day.

And greed is still killing this city

Admin note: In the video, Bourdain got the train wrong. Too bad he's not around to fix it.

This campaign season, everyone's in boxes are filled with smug campaign pleas and positions on issues that mean squat to us. The electeds responsible are totally living in their own world with only two goals - furthering themselves and building the party - while the state, our communities, and places like this that have meaning are studiously ignored.

Next time you see one of them thank them for this.

The city will bend over backwards to change street names for immigrant groups but when it comes to landmarking a very old part of our city’s history....it’s not interested.

Very, very sad. Unfortunately the place is on a residential block where they don't get much foot traffic. You have to be pretty "determined" to go there.

How much more money does the new landlord possibly think he can make with that space that it's worth killing off a beloved institution ?

Never mind. Will probably just yank the building down and throw up a crap barracks. Hope current manager can save the fixtures.

@PJ

The only thing that could possibly be built there considering that it was the only business over there is a homeless shelter.

My grandmother's brother lived in Glendale and after his burial in St. John Cemetery the family had his funeral lunch at Neir's. I was about 13 at the time and the bartender served me a 'short' beer as I stood at the bar with the older male relatives of the family.
Great place.
The bar might be fading away but not the memories.

Chinese landlord/Chinese corporation wants to make it a laundromat or grocery store. They raised Neir's rent to $5400.00

Nice story! I wonder where Neir's Tavern is?

Look, lets be frank. If a person from this country went into a foreign nation and destroyed a local cultural landmark to make money, (a few generations ago, Europeans might have stuff like that all over the 3rd World - but no more) they would likely be arrested, fined, and or expelled. Charges trumped up? Probably.

But local culture is very revered in every nation on earth except here in US and specially here in NYC where the only thing that matters is what benefits the Party. Besides, in the eyes of the Party, this is white man's garbage history. No voting blocks are established, no campaign donations forthcoming. This is a big yawn. It is a non-starter.

The Party thinks nothing about sinking a few mill to pour concrete and line the right pocket for a small traffic island with a few trees - if its used by the right group that votes the right way. Look at all the attention, money and time, for example, to the house with a few dozen illegals in Flushing covered by Crappy last week.

Yet another example of how the Party is dissolving the State and Society for its benefit. USA is indeed sinking into a third-world Crap Hole.

"Boom" There goes another small business and neighborhood institution, a victim of greed and hostile city policies to small business owners

My father went there. I go there. My kids go there. There's a clock on Jamaica Avenue that's landmarked. A freakin' clock. But not an irreplaceable inn. This makes me sick. Three cheers for Loycent who saved it 11 years ago, and give it all he had. We need more people like him.

OK ... Now that we filled Neir's last night with crowds of people, let's put out the petition to get landmark status for this beautiful building (and shame on the landlord for not painting and repairing its facade!!) We have the attention of all of the electeds who think they are responsible for keeping it open -- now take the ball and run!! Landmark Neir's and its neighboring building(s)!

To Second Anonymous:

Never thank a filthy politician for ANYTHING: They are ALL filthy, crooked and hyper-corrupt, as they DEVALUE honesty itself!

Case in point: The giant, free walking shithead who polluted City Hall, Bill de BLASS-hole, just brokered a deal to save NEIR'S at the eleventh hour——such an obvious ruse to cover for his OWN monstrously failed record of disgraced public service, and to divert the spotlight of criminal sociopathy AWAY from himself, as everyone else who bribed this counterfeit public servant is either on their way to jail, or soon to be indicted and prosecuted——but, NOT the mayor himself, for TAKING the bribes! REALLY? That's why I correctly refer to Mayor Shithead as: CRIMES WITHOUT CRIMINALS——and, the ever languishing public be eternally duped, bilked, scammed and damned!

What? WHAT?? In the year 2020, THIS IS NEW???
