Cuomo to propose subway to Red Hook

From NBC:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to ask the MTA to explore the creation of a new subway connecting Red Hook and Manhattan in his state of the state address Wednesday.

Cuomo will call on the Port Authority to relocate its maritime shipping activities at Red Hook to the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park so that the Red Hook waterfront can be freed up for "more productive community use," he said in a press release.

He's also asking the MTA to study options for improving transportation access to Red Hook and other nearby neighborhoods, including potentially extending subway service from lower Manhattan to a new station in Red Hook through an underwater tunnel.

Typically, a new subway tunnel would take years to build and cost billions.

A new subway, sure, 5 billion should do it. Trump will gladly kick in 4 billion in fed funds.

More pandering by brutta faccia on another multi billion dollar political whim to get re-elected.

Who the hell lives in Red Hook. Oh wait. There's an IKEA there and hipsters from Manhattan demand a direct subway route instead of having to go through the drudgery of using a bus or ferry.

How 'bout a subway connecting north and south Queens first?

This is as preposterous as the BQX and just as dangerous to the community for more induced gentrification.

Mario's son's "idea" is also another sop to the hipshit demo. What this really is is the subway from nowhere (a take on the notorious bridge to nowhere from a decade ago)

That abandoned rockaway line is not going to happen. The genesis plan for the Queensway has already begun.

How about the N to LGA, reviving the LIRR Rockaway Branch, reviving the North Shore Line on Staten Island, extending the Second Avenue Subway all the way, and opening the LIRR Belmont Park station for year-round use, before proposing a Red Hook Subway stub?

As long as we're talking about pipe dreams, extend the 7 along Northern Boulevard out to the Nassau border.

How about repairing the existing tunnels, tracks and trains that we already have? How about dumping the BQX idea and running a bus route to see if this is a good idea? How about adding extra cars to trains so people can at least get on them? Common sense isn't very common in NYC.

We live in an environment of weirdly imbalanced balance.

The places that had no subway lines, drew a certain kind of resident longing to get away from the places that did (ie, fucking crowded).

Red Hook pulled in the artists and light manufacturing outfits who fled W'msburg, Bushwick, and LIKED their relative isolation, where they could work in larges spaces at reasonable rates. Swarms of idiot hipsters couldn't find the place, so largely stayed away. It looks very much like how East W'msburg did/does from the early 90's onward.

I very much doubt existing RH residents really *want* a subway, when they consider all that it *really* entails. But all that matters to Cuomo/BDB is what "potential" newcomers want, apparently.

That said RH, surrounded by built-up Bklyn just past it's natural "borders" (highway etc), was always destined to transition this way. The little "space apart" enclave was never going to remain so.

New York is quickly looking like the dystopia its portrayed as in Soylent Green which was made in the 1970s when city the started getting rough. Even in those days there were many good parts of New York. Now however New York is becoming overcrowded like a third world city in Southeast Asia.
Makes you wonder why people move here in large numbers but often leave just as fast. I hardly know any people in my neighborhood that stay here for the long term. Every newcomer finds out there are better places elsewhere.

Yeah right, another Pie-in-the-sky project that will never see the light of day while any of the current maggots are still in office.

ah, common sense. the flower that does not grow in everyone's garden...

The Smith-9th St station is right there! Why should Red Hook get it's own subway line while half of Queens doesn't have anything at all?

I wonder what put this idea in the Governor's head.

At least it's not as terrible an idea as the BQX.

Brief recent history of Red Hook.
Innocent dumb artists move in to cheap spaces...,,hipsters follow....soon on way to total gentrification.
Goodbye original artist pioneers!
Let the hipsters row across the river!
Jerkwad Cuomo is just jerking them off for votes.

How about a fucking current subway system that actually fucking works and gets people to and from work on a regular basis and is not completely overcrowded, not a homeless shelter on wheels and does not break down every other minute. How about that pipe dream.

Spend money you don't have on shit that is not needed. What a completely asshole city this is.

This proposal, the LGA construction and the push to finish 2nd avenue subway have nothing to do with the merits or benefits of the projects. Andy wants to run for president and show how he got things done.

So , Tommy "ex monkey dance", why aren't you moving out if you like "The Nam" so much?
My brother in law served there and had to scoop up his dead combat mates to send home to the U.S.A. Spoken like a woosie lib yard.

Yeah, I've been around the world too, Tommy, and I still like it here better with it's faults. I see you've found yourself a soapbox to pontificate from. LOL!

What could possibly go wrong with building a subway tunnel to Red Hook?

>how about bringing back working piers so people could have real jobs?

The Port Authority has been working hard for decades to make sure that all the shipping goes into New Jersey. The only thing they seem to do for NY is contribute to endlessly raising our tolls.
