LIC concerned about L train shutdown

From LIC Post:

L train shutdown woes are spilling over into Long Island City, where local leaders are demanding that the city develop a plan to reduce the impact of the thousands of L train riders expected to take the G up to the Manhattan-connecting Court Square after the L train shuts down in 2019.

The Court Square Civic Association urged MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota to protect Long Island City’s already-crowded Court Square station from the extra riders that would travel there once the L train tunnel connecting Williamsburg to Manhattan closes for Sandy-related repairs in 2019.

The G train, one of four train lines that go through Court Square, will be increasing its capacity by doubling in length to carry would-be L train riders to the station, who will then get on Manhattan-bound 7, E, and M trains, according to the MTA.

The CSCA says the neighborhood is dealing with its own capacity issues after an influx of residential development over the years, with a 25 percent increase in ridership recorded at the station from 2011 to 2016. An MTA-sanctioned plan to divert riders to Long Island City, they say, will disproportionately affect Western Queens.

Wow, so no one saw that strain on the subways when they were cheerleading overdevelopment?

Here is a unique thought and so radical:

PLAN AHEAD.

Obviously something that it thrown out the window here in NYC. Their Motto:

Just Do it, deal with problems (Or more likely DON'T) down the road.

I mean this is just basic urban planning 101, no degree is needed, just good common sense.

Glad you are posting this for a number of reasons.

First, its not a real civic, but one of those fake civics that permeate Queens in that its little more than a local sounding board for the local pol that funds its coffee fund. Its also an opportunity for the developers to present their latest project surrounded by your smiling neighbors and friends that are duped into thinking anything they contribute in this environment is going to make a real difference.

Second, they go after the entity that their political boss tells them - in this case the MTA (which is a political animal as much as a transit system). They should be going after City Council and Jimmy Van Bramer - the ultimate source of power and all this development in the city.

What a sad wasted opportunity to make the community truely heard!

If you want to pin blame you should go all the way back to Bloomberg, who rezoned west queens for high rise developments while cutting essential services. The coming years will prove what a bad decision that was and serve as an example against gentrification of other parts of the city.

Boo Hoo Hoo. So they'll have more people on their line. Excuse me, have you been on the E/F/R/M lately?

come on - the city council stood idly by while this happened? ready to protect the people they grew up with and the way of life that they were a part of? or did they betray everyone one they knew and start to lick their chops thinking of all the campaign donations they were about to harvest?

get real.

and forget about this being a cautionary tale for anyone - all the old guard is either dead or cowering in a corner and are quickly being replaced by the new population of third world types who know nothing of the American participatory governing process (even if it bit them in the ass) and the clueless snowflakes that can go into fine detail on entertainment, food and perhaps sports if they have a blue-color background but nothing else.

All good for the Party all bad for our civic future as we know it.

that's it people!

I honestly could care less about this city, was once the greatest city in America, I believe that was over 40 years ago, but now its a money vacuum, if you are not rich you will be a miserable SOB, this city will drive you off the wall. Anything you get here you can get anywhere else.
I have been to other cities around the world, New York is more disgusting and shabby than many places in the so-called third world. Recently went to a city with double the population of New York and it had amazing infrastructure, clean streets, and was much safer.
New York has become a mecca of hipsters and bankers, it has no soul or direction. If you are sane and have an IQ that is at least 3 digits, leave this city.

These new trains SUCK they are too narrow and cant fit the same numbers of people the redbirds and old junk did.

What the F_ is up with these small pear shaped Canadian made cars, who the hell is making the decisions & ordering such useless lousy garbage.
This pear shaped train car shit may pass mustard in Montréal or France but NOT HERE !!

The A train was literally packed body to body like a can of sardines stink worse then a neglected chicken coop, I couldn't breath and had to get off. AND THIS WAS 1:15 PM THE AFTERNOON !!
I felt so dirty I had to take 2 showers and wash all my clothes, the subway at the worst I ever experienced, NEVER this bad

LOL

LIC was an industrial neighborhood. Who was their to 'protect'? The scant few small home owners have made millions. The scant few tenements are by and large still there and occupied.

Tough dog do, you want to live in an overdeveloped neighborhood, now suck it! And even when the L train is back in service,it will still suck as they keep overbuilding.

Talking like that is one step away from Ethnic Cleansing.

Talk to the people and most of them were forced out of their homes by things like construction, or got a fraction of the value of the land after it was developed. Besides it was city policy to run down areas like that. Hard working regular folks they were. Not their fault.

Who the hell is entitled to say where these people should or how they should live? when people like you had these attitudes we all really need to ask ourselves where in the hell was the Democratic Party the party of the working fellow, the little guy? Outside of patting the grey head in a senior center, the Democrats are raging over not those displaced, but they latte-sipping crowed. Say this slow: Dem-o-crats!

Stunts like this is why we now have Trump. Thanks Democratic jerks.

Of course, working white people are out of style - if they were Native-Americans you would never talk like that. As a matter of fact, you should have rode with Custer.

home owners in pre-developed LIC made out like bandits. ditto those in W'smburg. my folks own and rent as small LL's there, below market to boot. they do not overcharge because they can, and bump rents only in response to property tax increases, somehow which big developers can ignore or avoid but we can't.

new lic residents can suck a lemon. old ones can and should sell out. lic was purely industrial area in ways even western maspeth isn't. now it has changed to something different -- the real group losing isn't old residents, it's the industrial businesses that used to be there!

I was only too grateful to find a particular heading ignition sensor from a plumbing parts place at LICs outskirts two years or so back. when places like that go, that's REAL value lost -- real jobs, skilled trades, small businesses that create middle class home owners.

1000s of people still live there - and no, many people call that place 'home' and you can't place a price to that.

its mostly the greedy kids who moved out to the Island that sold out.

"heating ignition sensor"
-----------------------------
No shit, and that's an easy part.
Try finding an ignition control module or valve without calling a plumber or HVAC repair ---who will WOOP your ass to the tune of $600+ for 5 minutes work swapping out a $60 Shaw ignition module. (2 screws and 6 push on terminals)
The trick is to buy a 4 of these parts (that always the ones to go) on Ebay for under $100 and stash them. With all the shops gone I must now source parts from as far as Michigan & Ohio. Try buying a pack of 5 single edge razors for your utility knife, Exacto knife blades, even 320 wet sandpaper. YOU CANT without driving to Long island or the good hardware store on Grand ave

Hence why it's important to support your local businesses, and maintain a good relationship w/ your hardware clerks. They're knowledgeable, and if you on good terms, can save you a bundle.

I did exactly what you described by the way when I had a heating issue. Certainly glad not to have my ass wooped by a plumber for 5 minutes' work. Learned years ago is, pay once for the professional, watch what they do carefully, and remember it later. Also RTAF, keep spares of everything, and these days YouTube is a boon for looking up things what were formerly gate-kept beyond the average layperson's ken.

I am shocked by the remarks here - the civic culture of Queens must really be degraded to make some of the comments bordering on glee that, after a community suffers with an urban policy that nearly killed it, everyone seems to have no heart that its finally destroyed. It that all that Queens means to you - dirt? Everything and everyone else is worthless?

Two thinks to take away:

1. A few floods from global warming and those shoddily built towers will be 40 story slums - we are looking at a future that resembles Brazil or South Africa people.
2. To the smirking communities on the east - once you let the dog in the door guess what is heading down the pike in your direction!

"who will WOOP your ass to the tune of $600+ for 5 minutes work"
somebody has to cover the cost of license, mandatory storefront, prop taxes, payroll tax, commercial truck tax,HEALTHCARE, & don't forget covering the $100+ traffic tickets they get all the time.
oh yea, what about paying the guy for being stuck on woodhaven blvd for hours?
the price of life in this mess of a city!
obtw, I keep a few thermocouples on hand for the gas boilers and hot water heaters!
the chinese crap don't last anymore :-(
I save a lotta bucks by changing these when they go

and talk about fake civics
look at glendale civic, a facebook page full of bull
trying to sell themselves as a legit organization
all it is a controlled mouthpiece for crowley
wonder what they are going to do now?

"Third world types" are doing what the impotent and frustrated old Whites wont, and dont complain while doing it.

Thats why they succeed.

Thats why you have to bow down and lick their toes through their slippers.

Queens is theirs, not yours.

Your types are in trailer parks, small towns, dilapidated suburbs and rural communities.
