About the landmark backlog

Sorry to be late with this. The LPC decided to designate 3 of the 8 items on the backlog list for Queens:

Bowne Street Community Church
Lydia Ann Bell and William Ahles House
Pepsi Cola Sign

However, the following were removed from their calendar:

Old Calvary Cemetery Gatehouse - Van Bramer
First Reformed Church and Sunday School of College Point - Vallone
Proposed Douglaston Historic District Extension - Vallone
Spanish Towers - Dromm
Fairway Apartments - Dromm

Included are the names of the council members who did not support the designations of the dropped items.

Perhaps the entire city as a whole should be landmarked.

I imagine that it would be so much easier than the current bit by bit, piece by piece effort...

Since I don't speak Italian, can someone tell me if the name "Vallone" translates into English as "developer", "lobbyist", or "Stinky"?

A Pepsi cola sign??? Who are they kidding?

Those Vallones are poison. The world has moved on and they are stuck somewhere back in the 60s. The 1560s.

a stupid out dated soda pop advertisement is a landmark but buildings with historic significance and are still utilized are deemed unworthy and expendable.

The spanish towers and fairway apartments denials cannot be more obvious. This will make it convenient for predatory developers to "revitalize" the buildings and start the odious process to price out and disenfranchise tenants from their homes.

Easy to see now that a bunch of hotels are being hastily built on Queens Blvd. It won't only be for dummies looking for lodging in the world's borough.

The name of the game is Incrementalism

Can someone fill the rest of us in here on why Vallone is often referred to as "Stinky"? Unless there's a back story to some inside joke, it's really pretty puerile.

Of course a corporate logo is saved! Free advertising!

Many people think Paul Vallone bears a strong resemblance, both in appearance and personality, to Stinky, "the spoiled impish bratty overgrown man-child" portrayed by Joe Besser in the old Abbott and Costello TV show. "Oooh, I'll give you such a pinch!"

Hah - I can appreciate that! Thanks for explaining.

Yes, it has nothing to do with hygiene (or lack thereof). Fortunately, I've never been close enough to Paulie to make any comments about that.

Well they do make a mess out of community and their odious swaggering manners makes some people want to take a shower after they are in a room with icky Vallone supporters.

The Pepsi Cola sign was originall erected because actress Joan Crawford wanted to stick it in the eye of a snooty east side Manhattan co-op who gave her trouble. She was then married to the CEO of Pepsi Cola. I think the issue was the co-op board did not approve of her being an actress...something like that. Do not mess with Ms. Crawford..."Mommy Dearest"!

That is a good history lesson. Remember this scene---

So, the city landmarked a spiteful hideous tacky eyesore that was implemented by a psychotic popular actress and a whipped CEO. Great fucking job.

the real story -

Note - many on the list (inclusive of the First Reformed Church in the Point) are not a priority for NOW - that does NOT mean they are not meritorious and have been rejected for historic status.
