Chon family charged with tax evasion

From NBC:

The family owners of a popular spa destination in Queens have been indicted on felony charges for failure to pay $1.5 million in taxes over the course of three years, authorities announced Wednesday.

The owners of Spa Castle Inc., a 100,000-square foot spa facility in College Point, Queens, didn't pay the sales, withholding, corporate and MTA surcharge taxes they owed from 2010 through 2013, state officials say.

"The scale of theft alleged in this case is staggering," said Acting Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Nonie Manion, who announced the indictment along with Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
The investigation began when authorities executed a search warrant at Spa Castle Inc. in August 2015, and found records showing the spa owners underreported earnings and paid workers and vendors in cash.

Steven Chon, 57; his brothers Daniel Chon, 54, and Victor Chon, 50; and daughter Stephanie Chon, 29, were arraigned Wednesday in Queens Supreme Court. Bail has been set at $100,000 bond.

I don't understand how in this day and age people still pull that nonsense. If you're making that kind of money, just pay your damn taxes, you still will end up waaay better off then most if us.

This is how business is run throughout that community. Better check all of those stores and restaurants in Flushing, etc . There's probably hundreds of them evading taxes.

Just a slight misunderstanding.

Language difficulties.

Will be negotiated down to one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

Ten cents on the dollar is fair, right?

If men happen to yell out "Oh, God ... oh, God" while they're getting a private "massage," does that make it a church?

I'm sure it was all just a misunderstanding.

I think that place in College Point also a whorehouse. I been told late hours these women "lurk" and you can pay them to go in the pool or locker room with you.

Technically yes, private membership and bring your own booze also. This is much how Plato's Retreat and Lucky's lounge in Sunnyside operated in the 70's !
Perhaps the city is going back to the 1970, nothing is being enforced. Only traffic camera & alleged cracked sidewalk tickets where some sanctioned city contractor offers to fix your problem for $1800-$3,500

Can we sentence a few groups of tax evaders to terms long enough that others will get the idea that it's not in their interest? I think they used to call it a "deterrent". Sort of the idea behind sentencing.

I've been to Spa Castle in College Point a lot. There are many families there and many "girl's night out". I find this highly unlikely. It's just a sauna/bath like everywhere else in the world.

That's all they do is avoid taxes! Look at bayside with all their "churches " half of China and Korean are non religious so why do they have so many churches? It's to avoid paying taxes and the church buys up many houses and collects rent from their own people and they don't pay a dime of property taxes on any of them because churches don't pay taxes! All they preach in their churches is how to cheat the government out of money!

Look at the prime real estate Catholic churches own without paying taxes...or scientology for that matter.

They didn't make this dumb property tax exception law. They're using it to their advantage like everyone else.

>>why do they have so many churches? It's to avoid paying taxes

..and this remark is just stupid

>> All they preach in their churches is how to cheat the government out of money!

Half of 2 billion people is still a billion people

Between Asians and Muslims, you can kiss the America we know goodbye in 20-30 years. Europe is done in the next 10.

You just want to say bad things about immigrants. Has anyone checked their immigration status? They should.

check what government benefits they're getting under their other five names.
