Bloomberg cancels marathon

From the Daily News:

“The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City’s life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch. While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division.

"The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination. We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event – even one as meaningful as this – to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track. The New York Road Runners will have additional information in the days ahead for participants.”

As our Larry McShane noted earlier today in a story published prior to the cancellation, Bloomberg had been getting major heat for pushing to let the footrace proceed as planned:

Mayor Bloomberg is running into trouble over his decision to hold Sunday’s marathon - with even longtime political ally Christine Quinn questioning his decision.

Smart decision. Too bad it took near-unanimous outrage to get him to to it, rather than conscience. Then again, who ever said that he had a consicience?

The little man is so disconnected from the people.

How many Queens politicians did you see this week?

They are all disconnected from the people - but that is not a problem cause they know you will reelect them over and over.

Let him put his pesos where his mealy, Spanish-speaking mouth is: any runners who came from a long distance to participate and is already here (proof with a hotel booking), have him pay for the hotel and the fare home.

Hasta la vista.

Bloomberg, don't compare a marathon to 9/11 - you're half the man and half the height of Giuliani.

Great idea, George!

In the end--that bean counting, Boston bastard Bloomberg--reveals himself to be the venal, egotistical, micro managing wimp that he really is.

I almost spit up, watching one of his deputies speak for him on TV.

Mike is obviously afraid to look us real New Yorkers directly in the eye

I'm counting the days 'til we're finally rid of him.

By the way--
you voters had better watch out for Bloomberg's wannabee successor, speaker Quinn, because the real estate industry owns that little shrew.

Just check out her campaign donors on line.

Chrissy Quinn, and her council cohorts, should cancel Bloomberg's mayoralty, but they won't.

These are the creeps that gave him his 3rd term!
